The Alpha’s Prisoner - Chapter 74
“Do you really think Arden has a spy here?” Violet asked still in disbelief.
“That’s what Jack seems to think from the letter he wrote you. He asked me to look into it.” Morgana said.
“And did you find anything?”
“Not yet. But Jack is being extra careful in sharing confidential information to the pack, since it could be anyone.”
Violet nodded, still trying to digest that.
“You do know what happens to spies here, right?” Morgana asked with concerned eyes.
Violet shook her head again in confirmation, not wanting to think about that..
She was actually concerned about how in danger she could be. And Jack. Or anyone actually, although she thought that Arden wouldn’t kill innocent people to get to her.
He made clear that he wanted her to pay for what she did, so the main targets were her and Jack.
Was Lance really helping him, after all Arden had done to his family? Could he really be so cold-hearted to set a trap to Violet?
“Anyway, I have to go. You should rest more, you look awful. I’ll tell Lucinda that you’re awake!” Morgana said getting up.
“Thank you for the candies, Morgana. And for, you know, the talk.” Violet said a little embarrassed.
She still felt intimidated by Morgana’s presence. But it wasn’t an uncomfortable one.
Morgana was just too powerful and her presence was felt in the entire room.
It was more like Violet looked up to her.
So it was a little awkward when they had that sort of personal conversation.
Lucinda appeared a while later, and even though Violet was feeling really tired, she let Lucinda aware of what had happened.
They talked for hours, until Lucinda had to leave to prepare for her shift.
Violet slept for hours after that, and when she woke up, she wished to see Jack by her side again.
But he wasn’t there.
In fact, he didn’t show up for the next days she stood in the hospital recovering.
When she was finally allowed to go back to her room, Violet was feeling much better.
Her ribs were good as new, but the doctor told her to not shift or use her powers for the next week, since her body was still weak.
She didn’t have much to do anyway, so she decided to do some painting, read some books and go to the garden to sunbathe. That seemed to cheer her up a bit.
Jack showed up to check on her a few times that week, but never stayed more than twenty minutes.
Violet didn’t know what he was so busy with, but didn’t want to ask either. They were still awkward with each other, and she wasn’t having the strength to try to reconcile with him yet.
Neither was he.
One day, she decided to have lunch in the garden and Lucinda came to join her, as she was on her break from work.
“Have you heard?” she asked as soon as she sat on the chair in front of Violet.
Violet swallowed the piece of meat she was chewing before asking what she should have heard.
“There are some rumors spreading about the Diamond Pack. Apparently, Gwen seems to be considering building the walls again.”
Violet almost choked.
“What?” she yelled completely astonished. “You can’t be serious…”
Lucinda nodded.
“It’s not confirmed yet, but it came from a trustable source, so everyone thinks it must be true.”
“Why would she do that?” Violet asked more for herself than Lucinda.
“Who knows? It doesn’t even seem that Arden is gone. She is very much like him. Some people are even saying that he is leading through her.”
“Is that possible?” Violet asked still in shock.
“Maybe… Nobody knows where he is, so maybe he could be in touch with her, telling her what to do. If she builds the walls again, it will be easier for him to prepare a coup and come back someday.” Lucinda explained.
It couldn’t be. Violet couldn’t think of a scenario where Gwen would receive orders from Arden to reestablish the Diamond Pack to what it used to be.
That couldn’t be true.
Violet lost her appetite after that talk, and when she decided to go back to her room, she was feeling a pain on her heart.
To imagine Gwen becoming that sort of person made her really sad.
She didn’t want to believe that was the woman she had become, but everything pointed to that.
Arden was her biological father after all, so maybe she didn’t want to believe all the harm he had caused to others. Or maybe she had the same personality as him.
Who would know?
Violet just had to accept that maybe that was Gwen’s real destiny and she couldn’t do anything about it.
But when she opened the door to her room, Gwen escaped from her mind immediately after she saw something over her bed.
Her heart started to race uncontrollably and her hands were shaking as she got nearer.
On top of her pillow, there was an envelope with her name written on it.
At first, she thought it was Arden’s again. But the handwriting was different this time.
Afraid to grab the piece of paper, Violet stretched her arm to take it, as her mind went back to try to recognize who couldn’t written her name.
And before she could open the letter and read its content, she remembered.
That was Lance’s handwriting. Not Arden’s.
And she didn’t know if that was a good or a bad thing.
