The Alpha’s Prisoner - Chapter 76
Jack turned to look at her, but Violet couldn’t read from his expression what he was thinking.
It took him a few seconds to say something.
“I really don’t get what you’re thinking sometimes. You almost got killed, and you’re planning to meet the man again.”
“Well, if you let me bring him here, I wouldn’t have to leave the safety of the mansion to meet him, would I?” Violet backlashed.
Jack seemed to have been slapped in the face.
“Now you’re saying that you being almost beaten to death was my fault?” he asked astonished.
“That’s not what I said.” Violet replied.. “I’m just saying that we would be risking our lives to a lesser extent if we brought him in instead of us going out.” Violet explained.
Jack stayed in silent, contemplating what she just said.
But he was clearly not willing to give in.
Maybe for stubbornness, or even jealousy.
“Anyway, I just came to share that with you. Didn’t want to hide anything from you anymore, but guess I was wrong.”
“I’m not complaining about that. I appreciate that you shared this with me, but I can’t agree with you on this, Violet.” he said after long minutes in silence.
“If we are going to talk about marriage some day, you need to trust me.”
“I trust you, Violet. I’ve said that a thousand times. But the last time, I trusted your instincts and you almost died. I don’t know what else you want from me. And don’t threaten me with this marriage talk. I’m always being the one giving in to everything you ask me. And what do I get in return? More concerns.”
Violet felt her eyes filling with tears, but she hold them back.
“If I’m a burden to you, maybe we should just break up.” she suggested with a lump on her throat.
She could almost hear her heart shattering with those words.
Jack didn’t seem to be happy about it either.
He looked extremely sad and dazzled all of a sudden.
“You know that’s not what I meant. I’m only saying that I can’t help but worry about you. You could have a little more empathy, that’s all.”
“Well, that’s not fair. You know what I lost, and is it that wrong of me to want to have something of that back?”
“Yeah, right, you want to have back a man that only wants you around because he wants to marry you.” Jack sneered.
“Don’t be an idiot. I’ve already said countless times that I won’t marry him. And he also knows I’m with you. So what are you so insecure about?”
Jack opened his mouth a few times to say something, but whatever it was, the words got lost inside his mind.
Or maybe he just reconsidered saying whatever he wanted to say.
“You know what? I thought we could finally solve our problems and start talking about taking the next step, but you are clearly not ready for that. I don’t think you’ll ever be.” Violet pointed out
“What do you mean?” Jack asked in a low voice.
“I don’t think we’ll be able to talk about marriage ever. We go round and round in circles, and we can’t seem to reach a consensus. It’s exhausting and frustrating. I don’t think I can keep fighting with you anymore.” she confessed.
“So what are you trying to say?” Jack asked looking inside her eyes.
“What I’m saying is that I don’t want to live like this anymore. I don’t want to keep fighting with you, just because we have different opinions on basically every single thing.” she answered.
“If we are not capable of putting those differences aside, what’s the point of being together?” Violet continued, feeling her voice tremble with the possibility of ending things with Jack for good.
That was clearly not something she wanted.
But it was getting harder and harder to be happy. They didn’t seem to be getting to an end with all that argument, and she didn’t know what else to do.
She had had a taste of what was like to be free, to have her own opinions and do whatever she wanted.
She didn’t want to be right all the time, not even that Jack always agreed to her.
All she wanted was that they could stop arguing over everything, and started to care and respect each other more.
They would clearly not have the same opinion in life, but it was frustrating and sad to disagree all the time.
“So, what do you think? Do you want to put an end to all of this?” she asked, reinforcing her willingness to solve their problems at once.
But before Jack had the chance to answer, before they could decide their destiny, someone knocked on the door aggressively and entered before he had the chance to say something.
One of the guards entered, and from his face, Violet could see that he was panting from running and kind of scared.
“What is it, Dave?” Jack asked impatiently.
“I just got back from downtown. People are saying that Arden is planning to come back with an army soon. And that the Diamond Pack is about to build the wall again for good.”
