The Alpha’s Prisoner - Chapter 80
Violet cleaned her throat.
“I did actually. Why?”
Lance shook his head.
“No, nothing. I’m just trying to understand where I’m getting into. Now I see that Jack is not just afraid that I’ll betray you all. He’s jealous, isn’t he?”
Violet widened her eyes.
Was it that obvious, or Lance was just really good in guessing things?
“We can say it’s a bit of both.” Violet replied..
“I see… It makes sense. Well, I don’t know if you also have that doubt, so I want to make it clear to you. I wished this conversation happened in a different circumstance, but we don’t seem to be getting enough opportunities, right?”
“Anyway…” Lance took a deep breath. “I know we had a very honest conversation when you came back to the palace, where I told you that I wanted to marry you.”
Violet glanced at Lucinda quickly, feeling a little uncomfortable since she didn’t know how the woman was going to react.
But Lucinda was extremely professional.
She kept her poker face intact the entire time, even though Violet could see that deep down, she wanted to run away from there as soon as possible.
She should have so many questions inside her mind. But then Violet remembered that the bond mate wasn’t a strange thing to the members of the Rebels.
Although, it should be something entirely different to hear about it and actually feel it.
And Lucinda should be having mixed emotions by discovering that her mate was someone from the enemy pack, or even worse, a fugitive that was being chased and hated by both packs.
“It was a different situation back then.” Lance continued. “We had different points of view, and no hope for a future with freedom of choices, especially regarding marriage, right?”
Violet nodded.
“I honestly didn’t want to lead a life with someone I had no feelings for.” he carefully glanced at Lucinda for a brief second. “Not that I loved you in that way. I think it’s easy to get confused with your feelings when you really care for someone in a brotherly manner. Does that make sense to you?” he asked.
Violet smiled.
“It actually does. I always thought this was the case, but you were too closed-minded back then, right?”
Lance looked like he wanted to hit her.
But his smile told her otherwise.
“Well, if you hadn’t come here, you would also think the same thing. We were raised to accept that, weren’t we? Anyway, I’m just trying to say that Jack doesn’t need to worry about that, if this is a thing between you two. I don’t want to marry you anymore.” he concluded.
Violet raised her brows with a smirk.
“That actually hurts.” she laughed.
Lance shrugged his shoulders, risking to look at Lucinda one more time.
Violet was itchy to talk to her about it, so they needed to end that conversation.
But at the same time, she didn’t want to say goodbye to Lance. She remembered that he was all alone in the woods, having to hunt to eat and being aware all the time to stay safe.
It should be a hell of a life.
“I will try to talk to him again.” Violet said. “I’m sure he’ll give in eventually. I’m just worried about you all alone in the woods, having to be careful not to be attacked all the time.”
Her heart was actually hurting with all the possible outcomes that Lance could suffer from being caught in another ambush.
Arden and his men were clearly around and more aware of their steps than the other way around.
Violet felt impotent and sad for not being able to do anything for him.
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. I’m just really glad to see that you’re okay and that they didn’t kill you.” he uttered.
“How can I talk to you again? How can I find you?” Violet asked with some urgency.
She didn’t want to leave him at all. She had a real bad feeling about that, and all her instincts were telling her not to leave Lance alone.
But she couldn’t do anything.
Jack would kill him if she brought him to the mansion without his permission, and she didn’t have a place where she could hide Lance.
If she did that behind Jack’s back it would also bring them more trouble.
She was beyond upset now.
“I’ll reach out to you again.” Lance replied, but his eyes went from Violet’s to something behind her.
She also sensed Lucinda moving by her side, turning to see what was behind them.
And when Violet did the same to check what was happening, her breath got stuck on her throat.
She wished it was an enemy trying to attack them.
At least she would have a way to fight them with the help of Lance and Lucinda.
But the newcomer wasn’t an enemy.
And she would have to deal with him alone without anyone’s help.
“Jack?” she felt her lips moving as she pronounced the word, but her voice was barely a whisper.
Those grayish green eyes didn’t look happy at all.
