The Big Bang System - Chapter 35
Slowly inching forward, the light emitted by the rune reveals a group of primitive-looking creatures. They are crawling around on all fours and few of them are actually dressed, though all of them were armed with stone spears and axes. They looked similar to goblins but had many of the characteristics of rats with fur and long, worm-like tails.
The creatures hiss and cover their eyes, their aversion to the light obvious but, after a short period of adjustment they recover and move forward with lascivious grins. Seeing the uncovered bulges ‘down there’ Angela shrieks and retreats backwards with a disgusted expression before throwing the rune towards the group.
A burst of light shines out, accompanied by the screams coming from the ignited creatures. Those lucky enough to have avoided the blast run deeper into the tunnel, eyes bleeding from the sudden burst of light.
The screams die down quickly but the rune keeps burning lively, it was intended to go on for several hours and so this short period of time was minuscule in comparison. The acrid smell of roasted flesh fills the air and Angela quickly vacates the area before nausea overwhelms her.
Once out of the tunnel, her disgust quickly turns to anger. How dare they have such designs on her, she hadn’t even had her first kiss until recently, never mind going as far as… well… that; especially with such horrid savages such as those.
With rage fuelling her, Angela storms towards the hive tunnels. If she is going to take revenge on those miscreants she would need support. Though she has been woken up in the middle of the night, after being told of what had happened Lenara was just as angry as Angela, if not more.
A woman wronged is a terrifying force; a point shown by the terrifying efficiency at which the preparations are conducted. Soon an entire troop of soldiers is gathered in neat rows, armed to the teeth.
The force moves out toward the tunnel in complete synchronisation and upon reaching it the worker drones light up to show the way forward. As they proceed deeper into the tunnel small constructions start popping up. At first, it is just the occasional small hut but as they go deeper in the constructions get more and more frequent, though still nothing more than basic huts.
Angela starts to worry, the group hadn’t encountered a single one of the creatures from before but the amount of huts they have seen is enough to house dozens, if not more, of them. Eventually, they come to a clearing that reveals why they haven’t seen a single soul.
The clearing is a massive cavern that continues upwards for quite some time, a spiral ledge working its way around the edge, circling towards the top. All along the ledge stand the feral goblins, hundreds… no, thousands of the creatures stare down at them, the combined glow from their eyes illuminating the area.
Overall of them stands a larger goblin with a scepter topped with an odd orb of liquid stone. It yells something in a guttural language and a tide of goblins rush forward, startling Angela and alarming Lenara. The warriors quickly form a line in the tunnel, ensuring that no more than 15 goblins can attack them at once.
Even with the reduced numbers when the goblin horde slams into the defensive lines the formation quickly collapses due to sheer numbers. Despite going down each warrior takes down around ten to fifteen goblins each but compared to the overall situation it is but a drop in the ocean.
Though the momentum of the goblins has decreased all three of the remaining lines would go down within one minute. Angela makes her preparations before throwing out her remaining runes and retreating with Lenara.
The efforts of their preparation were showing results. Though they may not be able to win the fight they were easily able to retreat with the help of the warriors and runes. Leaving behind the hundreds of corpses they leave the tunnel with more than 2/3rds of the warriors and heave a sigh of relief.
Angela’s rage has calmed and she realises how rash her decision had been, she could have easily lost her life if it wasn’t for the weak individual strength of the goblins. That being said she also suspects that the island core was being guarded by them somehow. Though she couldn’t fight them head on there is sure to be some other way, not reliant on combat.
