The Billionaire’s Song - Chapter 42 Surprised Much
Kyle’s POV
It had been a little over a week since I left Maya and I missed her so much. I longed for her.So many times I would pick up the phoneto call her and then I would chicken out. I was still mad at her but my anger had slightly abated.
I flew back to LA and threw myself into my work. It was a distraction but not a very good one because at night it was difficult to fall asleep. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t sleep.I couldn’t think about anything else but her.My body was in LA but my heart soul were in Manhattan.
Maybe it was time for me to be the bigger person and make the first move towards repairing our relationship. I hated fighting with Maya. It probably hurtme more than it hurt her. I just didn’t understand her sometimes. She just did random stuff that didn’t make any sense. For the life of me I don’t understand why she would want to drop the charges against JP.After he almost killed her countless times.
It was very noble of her to want to take care of Madeline but she could have asked my opinion first. But she didn’t.It didn’t matter to her.
“Hey Jamie.” I spoke into the phone.
“Hey Ky..how have you been?”
“Great. What’s up?”
“I’m in LA for a few days. Can we meet for lunch or drinks or something..?
“Sure. Let’s meet at Spago’s in the next ten minutes?” I checked my watch.
“Cool it’s not to far away from where I am.”
“See you in a bit.”
I grabbed my car keys and hopped into my Audi A3 and put the top down.I turned on my iPod and tried to choose a song that didn’t remind me of Maya but it was hopeless. We had compiled the playlists together and just thinking about it caused my heart to constrict.
I decided to drive without any music on but then I was left to my thoughts-of Maya. Was she thinking of me as much as I was thinking of her?Did she miss me as much? What was she doing now?Gosh I missed my wife!
I pulled up to Spago’s and handed my keys to the valet. The hostess almost keeled over when she recognized me and I gave her time to compose herself. She led me to my table with wobbly legs and when I spotted James I told her she could turn back.
“Hey, what did you say to the hostess. She was visibly trembling and her face was as red as ketchup.” James laughed.
“She couldn’t resist the Kinley charm!” We laughed and went through the menu.
“So how have you been? Really? The truth Ky?” James looked at me with concern.
“I’m a mess. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. I miss her. I’m mad at her and yet I love her so much.” I ranted.
“Woow! Slow down dude.” James held up his hands.
“Well you asked.” I mumbled.
“Good afternoon gentleman. Are you ready to order?” The waiter stood between us.
“Just give us the Special and two whiskeys-make it a double-neat.” James ordered for us both. “Unless you want something else?”
“No man-it sounds good.” I nodded in agreement.
“Cos you look like you need a strong drink dude.” James laughed as he slapped me on the back.
“Yeah-I’ve had a pretty rough week I guess.” I ran my fingers though my unruly hair.
“Most of it was self induced..” Jamie pried.
“I had to leave-she was driving me up the wall.”
“I know I’m not married yet but- you were wrong. You should never have left in the first place. That’s not how marriage works dude. You’re supposed to stick together through thick and thin.No matter what.” James said gently.
“You’re biased because you like Maya., so you will always take her side.” I scoffed.
“Yes I like her but I also like you. I’m not taking sides. Just calling a spade a spade. She was wrong as well but you should have told her how you feel instead of giving her a cold shoulder.Anyway what are we doing for her birthday?” James switched topics.
“Gosh! How could I forget??” I hit my hand against my forehead.
“Because you were too busy acting like a toddler-speaking of toddlers..you do know that this bad energy between you and Maya isn’t good for the baby right?” James buttered his roll and sunk his teeth into it.
“Baby??”The blood drained from my face.
“Ooops..I thought you knew. Sorry man.” James wiped his mouth and swallowed hard.
“Maya is pregnant??!” I had brain freeze. “And you knew before I did?”
“No it’s not like that. Rita let it slip the other day so I assumed you knew.Sorry man.” Jamie apologized again.
“Don’t worry about it..at least now I know.”It was slowly sinking in. I was going to be a father.
The waiter came with our drinks, I asked him to bring a whole bottle of whiskey with an ice bucket.
I drained my glass of whiskey in one gulp. I was having a cocktail of feelings-joy, excitement, nervous, anxiety and mostly guilt.
“Hey! Take it easy there.” James chuckled.
“Maya is pregnant and I’ve been such a jerk. What kind of husband am I? I abandoned my wife-the mother of my child. Who does that?” I swirled the ice in my glass.
“I’m sorry man but I’m not going to argue with you there. You’re right.” James laughed lightly.
“I’ve got to make it right Jamie..I need to fix things.” I was determined.
The waiter arrived with our food and although it looked delicious I had lost my appetite.
“Look man-don’t beat yourself up. You didn’t know okay?” Kyle squeezed my shoulder.
“I-I need to go..Sorry but I need to go back to New York like now.I need to go home to my wife and-my baby.” I stood up and threw my napkin on the table.
“Okay-let me settle the bill while you get a hold of your pilot. Let’s meet back at the hanger. I’m coming with you.” James said.
“Thanks Jamie. You’re a good friend.” I punched the number in my phone and asked the pilot to get cleared for take off.
I hoped I wasn’t too late. Maya was so headstrong sometimes and there was no telling how she would react. I reached for my phone once again and called my wife.
“Hie babe. I’m cominghome.”
