The Billionaire’s Song - Chapter 8 Bad news
We arrived back at the hospital just on timeand took the elevator straight to Rita’s room. It seemed like she was asleep. Her face looked very pale.Dr Williams and a nurse were in the room and he was going through her charts.
“Good evening guys,” Dr Williams looked up and acknowledged us.
“Hey, how’s it going Doc?” Kyle replied.
“Hie Dr Williams, how’sshe doing?” I asked glancing over at Rita.
“Can we speak outside,”Dr Williams used his head to point towards the door.
“Is everything okay?” I asked my voice shaking. Kyle put his arm around me, offering support.
“We got back the test results and I’m afraid Rita has a case of advanced lung cancer,” he said breathing out audibly.
I gasped in shock. My brain was unable to process what I just heard.
“We are looking into the option of a transplant but we don’t have any available donors at the moment plus there’s the issue of her history of heart problems. We’re not sure if her heart will be able to handle it when we perform the procedure,” He said with concern.
I sank into the nearest chair and buried my face in my hands. Everything was just a blur from there. I heard Kyle probing the doctor with more questions and they continued to talk in hushed tones. I stood up and walked back to Rita’s room, tears blinding my vision. I brushed aside my tears and took a deep breath before I walked back into the room. I walked over to her bed and held onto her hand. She stirred from her sleep and her eyes fluttered open.
“H-hey My-Mya” she croaked. I could tell it was a struggle for her to speak.
“Hey RiRi, don’t strain yourself okay?” I said trying not to cry, “you’re going to be okay. I will do everything humanely possible to make sure you get out of here alive and well okay?
“Y-you, ca-can’t he-lp me. It’s too-late,” she stammered.
“It’s never too late!” I countered. “Don’t give up RiRi! I still need you okay?” I said my voice breaking.
Rita started to cry. Silent tears coursed down her cheeks. “I’m sorry-I-didnt-tell you. I-ha-ve known-for quite some-t-t-time now. S-sorry,” she cried softly. Her breathing became very rapid and the monitors started going off.Nurses rushed in and I was asked to step outside. I felt like I was in a very tragic episode of Greys Anatomy. Only thing was this was real life. As real as real can get.
Dr Williams rushed past me and ran into Rita’s room closing the door behind him. Kyle followed closely behind and just held me in his arms not saying anything. Just silently letting me know he was there. He led me to a chair and we sat down and waited for Dr Williams to come and give us an update. Good or bad.
It seemed like hours passed by when Dr Williams finally surfaced. His face looked tired and grim.
“We managed to stabilize her for now. We just have to keep observing her over night. But I think for now you can go home, cos there’s not much you can do for her, “he advised.
“What about Richard?” I asked, “Can we see him?”
“Not tonight I’m afraid, ” he said pursing his lips, “Dr Bernard is still in surgery and I’m sure it’s going to take a while,” he explained, “So just go home and get some rest okay?” he said patting Kyle on the shoulder.
“We might need some potent sleeping pills,” Kyle joked.
“I’m sure you will manage just fine,” Dr Williams laughed as he walked away.
“Let’s go home love,”Kyle said lifting me up slowly as he got of the seat.
I felt so defeated and helpless. I laid my head on Kyle’s shoulder as we walked out. Before we got to the car park we were ambushed by reporters, from all angles.Cameras flashing in our faces. Asking all sorts of random questions?
“What’s the nature of your relationship?” None of your business.
“Are you here in Capetown on honeymoon?” Do you see a freaking ring on my finger?
“How long have you guys been a couple?” Gee, hold on let me check.
“Are you here for a prenatal check-up?” No, I’m just here for the coffee.
“Is it true you paid Kyle to date you?” That was the last straw.
A usually composed Kylepunched the reporter right in the face and pushed everyone out of the way as we got to the car.I had to jump in through the driver’s side so that we could make a quick getaway.Reporters were still surrounding the car as Kyle drove away.
“You’re okay?” Kyle glanced at me briefly andturned his eyes back on the road.
“I’ll survive,” I muttered.
“I’m still waiting for the down payment,”Kyle joked about the reporter’s question, trying to lighten the mood.
“You will get it once I’m satisfied,” I smirked.
“Tell me when and where and I promise to exceed all your expectations” he said seductively.
I rolled my eyes. Face-palm.
“You want to grab dinner or should I take you straight to your hotel?” Kyle asked.
“Just take me to the hotel, I will order room service or something,” I replied.
I don’t think I will be able to eat anything tonight. Today was like a roller coaster ride.
“You’re sure you want to be alone after everything that just happened at the hospital,” he looked concerned.
“I’m a big girl. I’ve gone through a lot worse believe me,” I sighed.
“But you don’t have to go through it alone anymore. I’m here for you babe,” Kyle says as he grabs my hand and gently squeezes,”Always.”
“I appreciate you,” I say squeezing his hand in return.
“I wish I could kiss you, like right now, at this very moment,” he says turning to smile at me, ”
“But we will both end up at the hospital and we can’t have that now can we?” I said, laughing.
“Unless..” he says navigating the car to the road side and then turns off the ignition.
“Why are you stopping?” I asked confused.
“So I can do this..” he leans towards me and kissed me like it would be our last time.
Westopped but I wished it could have gone on forever.
Kyle starts the car again and says “Music?”
I nodded not being able to trust my voice.
He hands over the iPod to me and says, “You choose the song this time. Better make it good.”
I flipped through the iPod and found the song I wanted and pressed play.
This Feeling by Chainsmokers filled our ears and Kyle laughed and started singing along as usual.
