The Birth of a Villainess - Chapter 276
Everyone in the room glanced at his seat. They felt a mysterious feeling that Song Lan was too forward with this matter. Considering that this was a joint meeting between the nobles who took part in the Uprising that happened more than twenty years ago, most of them could not help but disagree with him.
“Even if tried to do the same thing to Qu Xing Xu, who knew if it repeats once again? The wheel of fate will not stop, and things will only continue even after our deaths.” Zheng Ze Yan was more outspoke than most of them. “In any case, we must tread carefully and think of something else.”
The other nobles agreed with him, their heads nodding in unison as if what he said was the most reasonable thing they’ve heard in years. But of course, Zhang Ze Yan’s words were not without any consideration. After all, twenty years have passed, and yet, someone knew of the Uprising.
Who knows if, after the deaths of the nobles, the same thing were to repeat o once again.
While everyone agreed with Zhang Ze Yan, Song Lan was dissatisfied with their choice. His hand slapped the table’s smooth surface, and a loud sound was created, taking everyone’s attention.
With a sneer on his lips, Song Lan said, “Not only all of you have gone soft and old. You’ve all lost your backbones. Did what that man said in the past break your will? Or perhaps, what he told us was finally coming to reality?”
As soon as these words were said, the faces of every noble, including Zhang Ze Yan, changed. They knew what Song Lan was talking about. After all, they all stood close to that man when he said his dying words.
“By betraying me and stabbing me with your swords, this only proves that you humans will never transcend to higher heights. And sadly, you won’t be able to get the thing you all wanted and die before your beloved’s eyes.”
These words gave them nightmares for over twenty years, and even until now, this spell of darkness has been hanging on top of their heads like a curse.
Zhang Ze Yan was silent. Song Lan’s words slowly tempted the other nobles. Even though Zhang Ze Yan’s voice and reason were understandable since they suffered significant losses that day. But still, as men full of pride and wanting to boast about their achievements while also the d.e.s.i.r.e of wanting to be written as part of history, these noblemen felt that Song Lan’s words were like a juicy fruit on a desert.
Thus, their passion and greed filled their eyes.
On the other hand, Zhang Ze Yan was silent. He had no d.e.s.i.r.e to join this war, even if he was one of the lead figures in that event twenty years ago. No matter what, he didn’t want to be involved in needless war and contest.
Zhang Ze Yan sighed when the nobles and Song Lan started to discuss their plans. He sat there silently before leaving the room along with the others.
While walking, one of his closest friends walked up to him. That man patted his shoulder, and Zhang Ze Yan shook his head and sighed again.
“What are you sulking for? If you just went along with us and voiced out your opinion on our plans, it would help us a bit more.” The man said to Zhang Ze Yan.
Zhang Ze Yan glanced at him while saying, “If possible, I’d stop you from going. It’ll be dangerous. Can’t you see that even the Emperor hadn’t acted out even after one of us sent a request to meet him?” The Emperor’s sickness wasn’t publicized. He didn’t know that they couldn’t meet the Emperor during this time. “Besides that, Qu Xing Xu is a freak. Just seeing him walk past me gives me the chill.”
Zhang Ze Yan’s friend laughed, “You’re just scared that he’s taller than you when he passed by. But I agree with you on one thing. That man is absolutely out of his mind. I can’t even understand his train of thoughts. However, we can’t do anything when he threatens our position. I can’t let him think that I’m scared of him.”
Zhang Ze Yan shook his head. “This isn’t about being scared or not. That man has his means and won’t stand idly on the side when someone tries to harm him.” Feeling that him saying this was fruitless, he stopped. Then, he waved his hands, “It’s your choice. I’m only going to stand here without doing anything. I’m too old for any action.”
After separating, Zhang Ze Yan went to his carriage. He had just entered when he saw that someone else was inside his carriage.
When dark clouds gathered in the sky, one would always expect that torrential rain would soon follow. Several vendors out in the streets hurriedly closed their stores while some also pulled up their huge umbrella stop their stands in hopes that the rain could be lenient with them and not destroy their products.
Standing next to the window, Lin Xiaofei stared outside as drops of rain soon fell on the roofs of several houses.
She felt something falling on her shoulders, and when she looked to the side, she saw a black robe dr.a.p.ed around her as she heard a deep and magnetic voice from behind her,
“The cold win is stronger when unexpected rainfall. It is better if we close the window.” Qu Xing Xu suggested and was about to pull the windows close.
But just as his hands touched the window, Lin Xiaofei stopped him, “No, don’t close it. I want to look outside as the rain pours.”
Qu Xing Xu no longer wants to close the window. However, he still couldn’t stop himself from worrying that she might get a cold if she stayed there too long. And so, his already outstretched arms suddenly pulled her body closer to him.
“Is that so now? Then, I shall keep your body warm while you stand here.” Said Qu Xing Xu.
Lin Xiaofei: “…”
