The Butterfly Of Chaos - Chapter 73 A City Underground
Turning towards the voice, Li Mo Shang saw a young man appearing to be in his twenties, dressed in a purple uniform not unlike Li Mo Shang’s current attire. Blond, curly hair that extended to his shoulders, dull teal irises; though the man did not exhibit a handsome appearance, his exuded a natural aura that caused others to desire to approach.
Noticing Li Mo Shang’s movements, the man lightly smiled and waved towards him, speaking once more.
“You must be someone new?” he said, gesturing for Li Mo Shang to follow. As they walked, the man guided Li Mo Shang towards a spacious passageway to the left, never ceasing to chatter.
“Only newcomers would enter from that corridor. Once you receive a specialized terminal from the administrative staff stationed here, you can simply take an elevator that leads to this place. Beats walking for so long under such disorienting environments, right?”
“what is this place?”
Hearing Li Mo Shang’s abrupt question, the young man raised an eyebrow in surprise, before a happy smile arose on his face. Dashing forward to stop Li Mo Shang, he began to sweep his arms to his sides, pointing at the walls of the cave.
“Hehe, they didn’t tell you while distributing the introductions? Look, look, this is the underground city of Blue Rose University! A top secret, one that even the Nan Qing Imperial Family doesn’t even know about!”
“An underground city?”
“Right, an underground, self-sustaining city!” the youth exclaimed, his fervent gestures pointing to various areas on the ceiling, introducing them to Li Mo Shang one by one.
“Every three square meters on the ceiling, there exists deposits of Cold Iron, and of the highest quality. Not to mention, surrounding each gemstone embedded on the walls is an expansive, natural refinery of interchangeable carbon! Just from that, the city can not only create virtually indestructible material, the fertilizers are derived from the carbon beds. In fact, powdered diamond is being tested to determine whether it can replace quartz in optic technology development.”
“Deposits of Cold Iron?” Li Mo Shang questioned, shooting a curious glance towards the youth. “Then colonies of Underground Burrowers must exist as well?”
“You’re right, colonies of such creatures do indeed exist,” the youth nodded, his expression no longer retaining its frivolity.
Though he wanted to speak, a soft chime rang from a device coiled around his wrist, causing him to tense and stiffen. Tapping on its surface, a small hologram illuminated the youth’s eyes, the contents unintelligible to Li Mo Shang’s vision. Even with his spiritual qi enhancing his sight, he was unable to inspect what was being displayed on the hologram.
For a few moments, all that could be heard was the youth’s repressed murmuring as he viewed the information displayed before him.
“Sorry. I wasted too much of your time,” he spoke, an apologetic expression displayed on his face as he gazed at Li Mo Shang. Pointing towards the passageway before him, he spoke quickly, before departing.
“Down the corridor in front of you waits the administrative staff. I would have liked to have guided you a bit further, but someone requires my presence immediately. My name’s Ren Purcell, you can find me later!”
“”
Watching the youth depart and swallowed by the darkness in the cave, Li Mo Shang shrugged. Gazing once more at the flickering, unique lights, he took another breath of the chilly air before stepping into the passageway.
–
Fortunately, the passageway was only a bit narrow, without any visual disorientation implemented like the corridor he had entered from. On either side of the walls, a light violet strip illuminated his path, but only by the bare minimum, causing him to constantly probe his surroundings with spiritual qi.
Li Mo Shang estimated that he had walked for a few hundred meters, when the passageway expanded to welcome him into an unexpected but distinct environment. Before him, was truly an underground city.
A massive array of towering buildings constructed of pure, unadulterated Cold Iron of varying density. A vast network of extensive roads, navigating throughout the entire city, leaving no building untouched. And at the center, an enormous crystal ball emitting a brilliant light that served as the only light source in the entire complex.
As Li Mo Shang gazed at the city’s entrance, he could only feel admiration and respect for its founder. As he walked on one of the roads, Li Mo Shang discovered that the only inhabitants were young people, spanning from their teenage years to their mid-thirties at best.
Not a single elderly member could be found, and all of these inhabitants were wearing Blue Rose University’s uniforms, yet the clothes were of a dull violet color for the males, and white for the female students.
Each and every single one of them had a white handbag slung over their shoulder as they scurried alongside the roads and into the various buildings. When streams of these people began to walk on the same road as Li Mo Shang, he instinctively manipulated the to disguise himself, silently acquiring tiny fragments of information.
“Did you here about it? Apparently, we’re having a new student soon”
“Seriously? The mid-semester examinations haven’t started yet, what are the directors doing?”
“Who knows? The administrative building was anxiously dispatching their members since the assigned guide ditched. Maybe the new guy got lost?”
“Guide? Wasn’t it supposed to be Yan Xuan? He’s supposed to be reliable, how did such a thing happen?”
“PfftSara, you’re far too stuck in your research. Yan Xuan finished his shift a week ago. It’s some blond this time.”
As the energetic students passed by Li Mo Shang’s hidden figure, they endlessly chattered about what Li Mo Shang could only presume was about him, the supposedly “new” student. Some discussed about how he had become lost in the cave, how he hadn’t even showed up in the first place, or was disqualified from the tests.
When Li Mo Shang had eavesdropped for a few moments more, he gradually pieced together that the administrative building was the enormous crystal emitting light at the center of the city. Musing in a mix of confusion and interest, he carefully navigated through the complex sea of roads, avoiding any incoming student as he slowly made towards the crystal ball.
Partly to satisfy his curiosity and interest, he did not forget to take note of the surrounding conversation.
“The lecture back then was pretty interesting. Who knew that by converting subjecting magnesium to a forced decay, it would return such a result?”
“Apparently, they’ve already accomplished the proof of concept. Just take a look at the Luminous Sphere, the only fuel allegedly used is precisely decayed magnesium.”
“No way! The professor was so adamant that the process couldn’t be used yet! An inhibitor and stability module was necessary before such devastating force could be contained!”
“Did you hear? The Western Holy Nation Alucia presented our university with a first-generation mutant being!”
“I heard, I heard! The transfer was done this morning, I saw some of the professors twisting their hair from excitement.”
“I wonder what kind of hybrid product was distributed? If it were a dove hybrid just like the pair auctioned at the Treasure Pavilion, I’d be so happy~”
“Oh, you! Always with your ungodly interest towards winged creatures, when will you live it down!?”
“But they’re cute!?”
His mind swamped amidst of the shocking news he had heard just then, Li Mo Shang had already walked to the crystal ball at the center of the city. Standing directly before the translucent surface, he almost forgot to disengage the as he brazenly walked in, nearly giving both himself and the inhabitants of the building a potentially nasty circumstance.
Shaking his head ruefully as he strode back outside, Li Mo Shang found a rather large gaggle of students to merge into, before disengaging his disguise. Ignoring the occasional ‘eh?’ of surprise as a young teenager appeared next to them from thin air, Li Mo Shang quickly breezed into the administrative building in a nonchalant manner, his face nearly crinkling from embarrassment.
His entry into the building was rather unassuming, just like the other students entering to request permissions to a specific archive. The attendants scanned his terminal, before questioning what his request was.
Only for the initial moments.
“Next student. A freshmanhuh!?”
The attendant stationed near the entrance scanned his terminal, and glanced at Li Mo Shang’s face and appearance, muddleheaded confusion gradually giving way to a great surprise. As she quickly rushed towards the nearest workstation to cross-examine with the system’s records, her expression became rather spectacular as she gaped at Li Mo Shang, her mouth refusing to close.
Pointing at Li Mo Shang with a trembling finger, her shrill voice resounded throughout the entire interior.
“It-it-it’s you!?!? Just where were you, the third search party was dispatched just a minute ago! Did you not think to Stand. In. Place. After. Losing. Your Guide!?”
With the attendant’s cry, everyone’s attention immediately fixated upon the newest intruder, Li Mo Shang. Noticing the rather odd disparity between their uniform and Li Mo Shang, in addition to factoring in Li Mo Shang’s own befuddled expression, the interior of the administrative building quickly burst into chaos.
–
Unfortunately, Li Mo Shang was promptly booted from the administrative building when the attendant had come to, under the claim of punishment after wasting three entire teams of staff members’ time and effort devoted into “finding” him. Holding a violet Blue Rose University’s uniform in one hand and a map in the other, Li Mo Shang didn’t know whether to laugh or cry as he gazed at the crystal ball that constituted both the administrative building and the city’s light source.
Heaving a light sigh, he re-engaged the as he merged into a crowd, referencing the map as he navigated through the maze of pathways towards the western side of the city.
After twenty minutes, he was standing before a medium-sized building, approximately thirty-meters in length and width, and ten meters in height. The building was akin to an oversized rectangular container, with translucent panels for its walls with an unknown, yellow tint.
When peering through the glass walls, Li Mo Shang could see rows of bookshelves within, causing him to get incomparably excited. Looking at his own appearance, quickly changing into the violet uniform as he carefully stowed away the blue clothing into his bag, Li Mo Shang rushed into the building.
Next to the door, engraved upon a bronze plaque, were the words: Advanced Studies Library of Blue Rose University.
The interior was rather different from the general studies library, as the luxurious atmosphere was replaced with a graver one, the bookshelves radiating a sense of archaism. Everything in the building was of a deep amethyst, be it the walls, bookshelves, or chandeliers.
Tables of birch decorated the library, and Li Mo Shang could spot at least three people per table, browsing though a terminal in the form of a tablet. Interestingly, the same luxurious couches and sofas remained, and quite a few of the occupants were relaxing on them, browsing on their terminals.
When Li Mo Shang passed them, they greeted with a casual wave or nod, of which he reciprocated with ease.
As he approached the nearest bookshelf, Li Mo Shang quickly noticed that instead of actual books shelved, they were terminals similar to the tablet he had just observed. Picking up a random terminal from the shelf, he gently tapped the screen, lifting an eyebrow when the terminal immediately formed an interactive hologram.
Fiddling with the settings for a while, Li Mo Shang finally got the hologram to display the contents within. Shockingly, the terminal alone contained thousands of books worth of information, and just a quick scan of the library immediately revealed hundreds of thousands, if not millions of these terminals.
Unable to recover from his astonishment, Li Mo Shang barely staggered over to a couch, sinking into the comfortable depths as his mind reeled from the mere thought of the vast knowledge contained within the library before him. Just from face value, this Advanced Studies Library of Blue Rose University could very well possess information of practically everything in the entire Blue Flame World!
Failing to quickly recover from such a shock, Li Mo Shang didn’t notice that his finger had accidently swiped over the hologram, triggering the first book to appear on the display. When clarity had returned to Li Mo Shang, what he say displayed before him instantly summoned forth a mental tsunami to crash into his thoughts.
