The Commoner Consort: The Country’s Respected Empress - Chapter 244
Let’s visit The Empress in future, shall we?
Future.
Kalki makes Maya sit on the bed leaning to her pillow.
Maya speaks while Kalki is busy tucking her under the thick blanket “I witnessed something strange”.
Kalki stops his actions and asks meeting her eyes “What?”
Maya gazes at Kalki while she thinks to herself silently ‘She was…I mean…I was inside the Chakra Viyugam. I was already inside the strategy… Then…Did she choose to protect you even before my words? Did I wrong her? I shouldn’t have slapped-‘
She stops thinking as Kalki holds her hand.
She speaks “It took only seconds for her to realize the situation”.
Kalki just looks at her.
“She didn’t fight much. It seems I did a good thing by calling her here last time. She learns fast. I never expected that she will listen to me”.
Kalki speaks “You listen to others well-”
She scoffs “I never really listened”.
He states “You did what you thought was right”.
She states “I did what I wanted. Not what was right”.
Kalki gets silent and starts to ask after a few moments “Did she…Was anything different?”
His eyes are filled with hope and a painful smile on his lips made her heartache.
She speaks pursing her lips “Unfortunately… I didn’t see… I couldn’t do much there”.
Kalki nods standing while adjusting her pillow “I see… It’s good… As long as we avoid the huge destruction. Everything is fine”.
Maya smiles looking at him keenly.
She looks at the scars on his face while her eyes traced his scar on his shoulder and it continues under his robes.
She scoffs remembering Maya’s words.
‘A huge scar on his hand? What about this man living dead? Could she even differentiate the repeated scars on his body? Let alone count them. I hope she even gets a glimpse of his scars…’
She forwards her hand and pushes Kalki’s robe aside so that she could touch his chest.
She feels his deep scar under her palm and gazes at him guiltily “I should have protected you”.
Kalki smiles softly and holds her hand “I don’t resent you”.
She takes a deep breath and darts her eyes on his mesmerizing smile ‘I don’t want to cheat… I don’t want to meddle with the past more… I want everything to happen naturally… I want to come to you myself…as destined.
Kalki smirks “You know… I can hear your thoughts” and lifts their linked hands to show her.
Maya smiles as she stared at him “I know”.
He asks playfully ‘Don’t you think you owe me a confession from your mouth?’
She smirks “Why don’t I remember getting a single confession from you?”.
Do I have to?
She too asks “That’s what I ask you. Do we have to?”
Kalki rolls his eyes in defeat “You never admit!”
She declares out of nowhere “Let’s go to the hall”.
Kalki frowns “Do you have to?”
Maya speaks nodding “I need to. So that there will be evidence… that everything that happened is real and not some illusions. I need their trust to do this. I could forget as time passes… I have to do this now…”
He supports her to walk into the huge hall.
She takes the charcoal in her hands and starts crushing it. She starts drawing the visuals she saw when she met Maya.
She stops briefly to ask Kalki “Don’t you want to come?”.
Kalki smiles shaking his head “I don’t have discipline. I might do something on my own and everything will be jeopardised again”
Maya asks amused “Oh? What will you do?”
He gazes at her faint smile and remains silent.
Maya looks away probably guessing his thoughts and resumes painting.
Both become silent while Maya keeps drawing and Kalki stood next to her silently.
Maya gets startled when she felt Kalki’s fingers on her cheek.
Kalki caresses her cheek and smears some medicine while she indulges herself in drawing the scenes.
He speaks while applying the medicine carefully not to hurt her “You are going hard on yourself”.
Maya answers absentmindedly “I had to”.
He tries to be silent but speaks his mind “You are quite ruthless even on yourself. I didn’t want to mention this but don’t you think it’s too harsh?”
Maya rolls her eyes “It was at that moment… to gain my attention…”.
He mutters “Whatever”.
She states “I hope you too could see the change…”
Kalki speaks keeping the medicine bowl down “I believe you”.
She scoffs eyeing his scar on his chest “Even after that?”
Kalki smirks noticing her intense eyes on him “Even if I die”.
Maya “…” Huh?
He caresses her cheek and leans forward slowly.
Maya opens her eyes wide when she thought something in her mind.
Ha ha!
Kalki chuckles getting his hand back from her cheek and leaves her alone.
He couldn’t help shake his head while walking out of the hall “How could she even… All she wants to do is draw! Then be it!”

Maya felt her heart beating fast and curses in her mind ‘****! When will this obsession for voices of mine leave me?! Why does that sound magical to my ears?! This is bad!’

Back to the present.
The Southern Realm.
The Northern Realm’s Camp.
Kalki enters the camp where Maya is resting. He watches her sleeping soundly and frowns noticing something. He could only see a glimpse of something on her left cheek but her tilted head didn’t show much.
He bends slightly and pushes Maya’s face so that he could see her swollen cheek. He gets confused ‘Did she get slapped by anyone? Who dared to-‘
He forwards his hand absentmindedly to touch her cheek but gets his hand back swiftly as Maya tosses in her bed.
He clears his throat before standing straight and looks away.
She groans faintly before waking up and opens her eyes slowly.
She blinks her eyes and frowns still in her sleep “You?”
“You are hurt”.
