The Confusions Of Love - Chapter 17 Elizabeth
She really did it. To appear here after all is her face, I do not know why it surprised me. I should wait for that.
She was standing in our room looking around interested.
“Beautiful apartment,” she observed. “Beautiful view,” he said, approaching the high window that showed the view of the city.
I was annoyed, did she come here to admire the view? Even if it was that, it was not her fault. We’re in the middle of a scandal like this and she just shows up here with that stick face.
I looked at Paul and he shrugged as if telling me it was not his fault. I admit it was not his fault, but I was still irritated.
_ Emily_ Paul caught her attention_ Can I offer you something to drink? _ He asked politely.
_ Yes, thank you_ she smiled at him_ Water would be great.
Paul stepped back to get the water for her and we were both alone.
“You look good,” she told me wryly.
“No thanks to you,” I told her, my strong voice showing that I would not lower my head to her this time.
Being married to Paul all these months gave me courage and confidence in myself. I was no longer the little girl she liked to upset and this was my home. And I would not feel bad in my own home.
She raised a surprised eyebrow and laughed wryly.
_ It seems that you learned a few things_ she came closer_ How is it? Is Paul teaching you good things?
_ Actually yes_ I said to her without shaking_ He is a great teacher_ without wanting it came out with double meaning and to make matters worse she seemed to understand.
His mocking smile really irritated me. But Paul arrived just in time and interrupted us. And again she changed acting like a good person she gave that little smile to Paul as she thanked him for the water.
Thank you, she drank slowly.
I wanted to tell her that Paul knew full well that she was two guys but I held on and let things roll.
“So what are you doing here?” Paul asked her. “I have not seen you since the day before our ” ALMOST ” wedding.
_ Yes_ she sighed regretfully_ I did not want to leave you in the hand, but I also did not want to marry you because of a contract.
I could almost believe she really did. Damn, she was convincing. I looked worried and insecure at Paul’s reaction. He raised his eyebrow like that when he knew I was lying.
I sighed in relief. He would not fall for it.
“That does not really matter anymore,” Paul told her, shrugging his eyes, hiding his feelings, his expression neutral. Lisa and I were married that day. But you sure already knew that.
_ Yes_ she agreed_ I saw in a magazine that you had married my sister, but it seems that no one had noticed the exchange.
_ I_ shrugged without worrying about it_ We left like this for a while.
“But now it’s different,” she told me, her eyes shining with a dangerous glow. “Everyone’s talking about it. As my name was quoted I decided to come here to say that I am very sorry that all these problems are happening.
“Are you the next source they were talking about?” I asked her. That would make sense. This bomb scandal and she shows up the same day? coincidence of more to my taste.
“Of course not.” She looked at me as if the slightest idea that she might do something offended.
It seems, I thought.
_ I would never do something like this_ she continued with her sweet way of speaking_ I just came to apologize for everything.
“You’re excused,” Paul told her. “To be honest, I’ll never blame you for anything.” He glanced at his watch and nodded. “But it’s a little late now. Let’s have lunch with your parents tomorrow. You can join us if you want.
_ Of course_ she got up_ I came too late, I’m sorry.
Until it was not that late, but I loved the fact that Paul was already accompanying Emily to the door so I kept quiet and waved as she left.
“See you tomorrow Emily.
“Yes, see you tomorrow,” she agreed.
The silence that followed her departure was long.
_ I bet she was the source_ started sour.
_ It can be_ Paul agreed without worrying_ But it does not matter. Tomorrow we’ll figure it all out and let the dust settle down.
“I can not believe she’s back,” I complained loudly. Paul laughed in amusement.
FOLLOWING DAY; SCHOOL.
Too annoying, there was paparazzi waiting for me when I got to school.
“Great,” I said to Paul beside me in the car.
_ Do you want me to….
_ No_ I interrupted him hurriedly, it would be worse if it were me_ I can go alone. See you later.
_ It’s all right.
This time our kiss was quick and he left when I ran into the school, ignoring the shouts and the photos they took.
“You’re famous,” Kelly teased me smiling.
“I do not want to be famous,” I replied to her.
“I think this might last a while,” Tessa told me. “Paul was already news before this marriage, now …”
She did not finish the sentence and did not even need to understand where she wanted to go with that. And I admitted that she was right. Paul was a competent and attractive man. He took good care of his family’s business, and now he was saving business from mine as well.
And even being a busy man always had a little time for me. Of that I could not complain.
“Let’s get things right on their own,” I told them. “It can not get any worse than it already is.
But as always this has proven to be the opposite. The school was completely chaotic. There were those who mocked like Jennifer, she loved to tease me. Greg looked really disappointed that I was married. But that did not mean anything to me.
And there were those who once treated me badly now treat me well. I told Tessa about it and she shrugged.
“It’s because their parents must have said something,” she told me.
“What do you mean?” I asked interested.
_ As you know Paul is an influential man in business and all those idiots_ she pointed out around us_ They are the sons and daughters of rich people and some of them want to be well on tape with their husband. And what better than being friends with his wife?
_ Of course_ now I understood what was happening here.
The only people in my life who never changed were Kelly and Tessa. These two were the same no matter what. That’s why they were my best friends.
“I can not wait for this to end,” Kelly said from my side.
“This time it’s a little short,” he told her.
After a while we all sigh.
Tessa said dreamily.
I chuckled softly.
Lunch with my parents was as usual, very cool. My mother criticized my uniform.
“Why did not you change your clothes?”
“No time, I came straight from school.” I shrugged.
“That’s why Paul should have married his sister,” she said, so that only I could hear.
It made me furious.
“So maybe she should have stayed here and married him,” I whispered angrily to her, watching the way Emily talked and touched my husband’s arm. “But she did not stay, did she?”
My mother did not answer me but just looked at me resentfully.
“I married him,” I told her still in a low voice. “I am his wife. And I’m a Drummond now, please do not forget this_ I really did not want to threaten my mother, but it sounded like one.
Paul seemed uncomfortable with my sister’s attention, but he noticed the exchange between my mother and me. He looked at me and I shrugged.
“It’s nothing.” I did not say anything, just moved my lips, but he understood.
The lunch was long and the dessert long, I had headaches and wanted to go home. So when Paul said he had to go back to the office I rushed to go with him. We said goodbye to my parents at the door of the restaurant and we went together to the car.
“What did you tell your mother?” He asked me when we were in the car. “She looked furious.
_ I just said the truth_ I rubbed my forehead and took off my glasses.
_ It’s all right?
“I’m tired,” I said, not knowing why I wanted to cry. “Can you take me home?” I asked.
“Of course,” he said worriedly.
I would wait to get home to vent but when we entered the garage I was sobbing sobbing. He parked the car and pulled me to him putting me in his lap while I cried wetting his shirt with tears.
“All right,” he kept comforting me. “It’s going to be all right. It’s all right.
