The Confusions Of Love - Chapter 18 Paul
IN THE APARTMENT, KITCHEN ….
I watched Lisa as she took ice cream into the refrigerator, chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Before I married Lisa in my home I would never have that kind of food. Ice cream until yes, but syrups of chocolates, salgadinhos and cookies with fillings of all kinds, these not.
But now, there were all sorts of snacks in the closets. When Juliet went shopping, Lisa always made her own list of things she liked to eat and asked Juliet to bring it to her.
Her eyes and nose were red from the tears.
“Are not you going to tell me what happened?” I asked worriedly. After we went upstairs she went straight to the refrigerator without telling me anything.
By the time we were married I had never seen Lisa shed a single tear. And when she cried in my arms a few moments ago it was really painful. I wondered how long she was holding it.
“I’m not going,” she said, passing me by. She avoided my eyes sitting on the floor and settling to eat ice cream and other unhealthy crap while she turned the TV on.
_ Something happened at the restaurant today, I said. It was obvious to me that it was her mother who was to blame.
_ It happened_ she agreed with me. Apparently she was already recovered from any sad or distressing feeling.
“But you’re not going to tell me what it is,” I realized, irritating me. Did she not trust me?
“That kind of thing is nothing,” she sighed tiredly, obviously wanting me to drop the subject. “It’s just some mother and daughter issues.
_ Enough to make you cry like that? _ I asked, doubting_ What did she say to you?
_ Nothing much_ she shrugged indifferent_ Just the usual.
_ That would be … _ I insisted trying to get her to talk to me, but apparently this was not going to happen.
“I just undressed,” she told me with a small smile. “I feel much better after I’ve cried.
“I do not feel better,” I told her. Seeing Lisa cry was not something I wanted to see again.
I leaned in beside him. She looked at me with a small smile.
“It’s going to be okay,” she told me and I laughed because it was exactly what I said to her as she cried. “You do not know how good it was to hear you say this to me.
She kissed my hand on my hair pulling me closer. My hand went to his face holding it close while my tongue invaded her mouth, kissing her deeply.
I kissed her with affection and desire. Showing actions when I wanted her by my side and how much I wanted this marriage to work.
“You’re going to be late,” she told me softly, breathing heavily as she walked away.
“Yeah, I know.” I gave her a small kiss. “You’ll be fine by yourself.
_ I’ll. Juliet must come any moment anyway, I will not be alone.
I kissed her again and she hugged me harder. I did not want to walk away, but really I had to go back.
“See you later,” I told her as she left.
TWO HOURS LATER, IN THE OFFICE …
After talking to my executive officers, I went back to my office and found Emily waiting for me. I stopped surprised that she actually came here to see me. She had lunch together a few hours ago and she came here. I confess I was curious.
I wanted to see what she meant to do.
_Emily_ I called for her_ What are you doing here?
She came up with a smile, straightened her purse over her shoulder. That should not surprise me, I thought. Emily had a plan and I knew it.
_ I could not talk to you right at lunch so I thought I came here so we can talk right.
That’s because she got her lunch all over me. And that was one of the reasons for Lisa’s tears. That’s why I was not in the mood to deal with her now. But I held on and pointed to the door of my office, inviting her inside. It was better to solve all this now than to let it continue any longer.
So she started with a knowing smile. How’s married life going?
Was that what she wanted to talk about? About my married life? I sat at my desk and waited for the continuation.
“When we had lunch together, I did not have the opportunity to ask.” She continued to sit in one of my chairs in front of my table. “It would be kind of weird with Lisa present.
“It’s weird to ask without being present,” he told her without much education.
My mother raised me very well, but now I was not feeling very polite.
“Of course,” she giggled and settled into her chair, making her skirt rise more than she should have.
That should try me, I asked myself interested and kind of amused.
“I was very surprised when my mother told me that you married my sister,” she told me.
“I confess I was surprised too,” I told her, trying to see where she wanted to go with that.
_ Again I’m sorry for running away …
“It does not matter now,” I interrupted.
If she wanted to apologize for running away, it was better to stop. Because I did not feel sorry for that. I felt relieved. And for that reason I did not want his apologies.
“I know it does not matter,” she said, adjusting her blond hair. “You’re my brother-in-law now,” she tried to play.
_ I am, _ I confirmed.
I got up without wanting to continue this conversation that did not seem to go anywhere.
“If you’re done, I have things to take care of now.
She looked surprised that I was putting her out. But she got up and followed me to the door and before I could open she took me by the arm.
“I want another chance,” she told me approaching.
Another chance? She can only be kidding me. She ran away from the damn wedding and I married her sister and she shows up in my office with a damn excuse to throw that shit in my face. Another chance?
“Another chance?” I asked her, holding me. “And what in the world does another chance mean?” I asked slowly.
She moved closer to me, wrapping her arms around my neck and hugging me. His sickening scent encircled me.
_ Divorce her_ she told me her lips almost in mine_ Lisa does not know what she has to do as her wife. She does not know how to please you? She’s just a little girl with no salt.
This was going too far. I pulled her away from me with disgusted face.
_ Enough of that shit. That little girl is a Drummond. She is my wife.
I tightened my grip on his arms, looking coldly at his pale face covered with makeup.
“I’m only going to say this once, Emily. I want you to stay well away from me and my wife. “I released her and she walked away in surprise.” You Reymond, you really are a pain in the ass. I know the way my wife was treated when she was in her care. And I know that it still happens every time we meet.
_ That is not…
“Yes,” I interrupted his tattered refusal. “From now on the meetings will be less frequent. Of course we will be educated on occasions when we meet at some event. But only out of consideration for my wife.
I looked at Emily as I said it. I wanted her to make sure I was not kidding. I opened the door so she could leave the room.
“It’s always a pleasure to talk to you, Emily,” I said, closing the door in his face.
Some time later I asked Lena, my secretary, to get in touch with Lisa’s father, Thomas.
He arrived shortly after five, and did not seem pleased to be being summoned.
“What happened?” He asked me, trying to control himself.
Thomas was older than me and my father-in-law so I wanted to be a bit educated, but his older Daughter took all my education earlier by proposing that I divorce my wife. I was angry.
_ On your business_ I started putting some documents on the table in front of you. These are the reports of the last months. Things are going well, you already have a profit margin of 20% and we have forecasts that this will increase.
“That’s great,” he said, looking at the report in front of him.
“I’ll continue to watch closely, but from now on, someone else will take care of your business,” I told him.
_ But_ she looked surprised_ The contract says …
_ The contract says that I have to take your company out of the hole and I took it_ I interrupted without much patience_ It does not say anything that I have to keep my eyes on the way you do things.
But it was what I intended at the beginning. I would take care of both at the same time, but I gave up on that. I’ll let you work, with some conditions of course.
_ You will continue to take care of what is yours. Eventually Lisa will run the Reymond company.
Lisa?
“Yes. She’ll do it better than you do.
_ Lisa is just a little girl …
“I would not underestimate her if it were you,” I interrupted. “Another thing, keep Emily away from me and my wife.
“What did Emily do?” He asked in surprise.
_ Does not matter. I just do not want to and do not want to deal with her again. Remind her of it.
