The Daily Life of a Female Esper in Ancient Times - Chapter 196
As soon as Li Xia spoke, everyone inside and outside the room was shocked. They didn’t know the lady was so fierce.
The four autumn maids wanted to cover their faces, as her hidden true nature had erupted.
“Xia Xia, how are you? Are you alright? Are you in pain?” Lu XuanNing was delighted that Li Xia was speaking.
“Shut up,” Li Xia was in so much pain she wanted to hit someone. This hurt worse than being scratched by a zombie. She had never been in such pain before. “You little brat, when you come out I’m going to give you a beating.”
Lu XuanNing didn’t dare speak and stood to the side looking on, extremely anxious.
Old Marquis Lu looked at his anxious grandson and shook his head. “Too young.”
The Old Madam heard this and leisurely said, “When I was giving birth to my eldest son, a certain someone actually fainted.”
Old Marquis Lu’s face stiffened. Thinking of his behavior back then, he lowered his head to drink his tea.
Following the midwife’s guidance, Li Xia successfully gave birth to the child, still in good spirits. The midwife marveled at this, having never encountered such an energetic new mother before.
The cry of the baby caused those sitting in the courtyard to stand up and look inside. The midwife brought the swaddled baby to the doorway for the three to see, offering congratulations: “Congratulations to the Old Marquis and Old Madam, it’s a young master.”
Lu XuanNing didn’t even glance at the child, finding an opportunity to go in and check on Li Xia. The Old Madam took the baby into her arms. “He looks just like XuanNing, exactly the same as when he was little.”
Old Marquis Lu also craned his neck to look at the little infant in the swaddling clothes. Seeing him sleeping peacefully, he smiled. The Old Lu Family had an heir. He had a great-grandson now. It was wonderful.
Lu XuanNing, who had entered the room, smelled the bloody scent that filled it and saw Li Xia covered in sweat. He stepped forward and took the handkerchief from Qiushui’s hand to wipe Li Xia’s sweat. “You’ve worked hard.”
“Lu XuanNing, when I was in pain giving birth, I wanted to beat the child,” Li Xia was in the mood to joke with Lu XuanNing.
“You don’t need to beat him, I’ll do it,” Lu XuanNing wrung out the handkerchief.
“You dare hit him?” Li Xia’s voice changed.
“Alright, alright, I won’t hit him,” Lu XuanNing went along with Li Xia’s words, wiping her hands.
Li Xia grabbed Lu XuanNing’s hand and pinched it hard. “You can’t hit the child. I’m still not satisfied. This is our child. Why should I be the only one in pain?”
Lu XuanNing looked at Li Xia with heartache. “You can pinch me as much as you want if you’re in pain.”
Lu XuanNing’s reaction made Li Xia feel that she was being a bit unreasonable, and she let go of his hand. Lu XuanNing held Li Xia’s hand. “Xia Xia, I truly wish I could give birth in your place. I want all the pain to be on me instead.”
Lu XuanNing’s deep, affectionate gaze warmed Li Xia’s heart. The couple exchanged a few tender words before Li Xia fell asleep. Lu XuanNing stayed by her side the whole time, not even glancing at the child once.
It wasn’t until the Old Madam brought the baby to Li Xia’s side that he finally looked at the child. Its skin was wrinkled, like a little old man. “Is it this ugly?”
“You were like this when you were little too. All newborns are like this. In a couple of days, he’ll be fair and handsome,” the Old Madam smiled as she looked at the little infant.
“Have you chosen a name for the baby?” When Li Xia was pregnant, she had decided to let Lu XuanNing choose the name himself. Lu XuanNing shook his head; he still hadn’t thought of a good name for the child.
The next day, everyone who had received the news came to see the baby. As soon as Li Xin arrived, she took the little one in her arms and wouldn’t let go, clearly delighted.
“He’s so ugly, what’s there to look at?” When Li Xia first woke up and saw the child yesterday, she was startled. What on earth had she given birth to? It was so ugly. Being this ugly, how would the child manage in the future?
“Child, you’re becoming more and more outspoken as you grow older. The baby’s eyes and brows look so much like XuanNing’s,” Mrs. Lu peered at the child, happy for Li Xia.
“The baby’s nose and mouth are especially like Xia Xia’s,” Li Xin found the baby more adorable the longer she looked. She thought to herself that her own child would surely be just as cute in the future. At the same time, she envied Li Xia for having such an adorable baby.
Li Xia looked at the swaddled baby again and again. “I can’t see it at all.” The baby was so small and wrinkled, how could they tell it looked like her and Lu XuanNing?
“Are you not planning to hold a third-day celebration?” Watching Li Xin holding the baby and not letting go, Mrs. Lu also hoped that Li Xin would get pregnant and have a child soon.
Li Xia sat up straight. “Lu XuanNing and I have discussed it. We’ll just have the full-month celebration.” They were both the type to avoid trouble, and they also considered that it might not be good for such a small baby to be startled. Just having the full-month celebration would suffice.
Knowing that Li Xia was decisive and wouldn’t change her mind, Mrs. Lu didn’t say anything more and joined Li Xin in cooing over the little baby.
Xu came with Wang Hong on the third day. They were supposed to come yesterday, but Wang Hong had caught a cold in the past two days, and they were afraid of infecting the little baby. They waited two days until Wang Hong was better before coming.
Wang Hong was an obedient child. When he heard his mother say they were going to see his little cousin, he prepared a gift early on – a wooden dog carving. It was something Li Xia had made for Wang Hong to play with. To make his little cousin like him, he gave away his most treasured dog toy.
Seeing Wang Hong acting like a little adult, both Li Xia and Xu smiled. Xu looked Li Xia over and could see from her rosy complexion that she was being well taken care of.
“Have you named the child yet?”
“Not yet.” In order to give the child a good name, Lu XuanNing had nearly worn out his books. He had come up with over 100 names, but none of them were satisfactory.
Because of this, Lu XuanNing had shut himself in the study, vowing to come up with a good name for the child before the full-month celebration.
Thinking about names, Xu was reminded of how Li Xia got her name. Seeing Xu’s expression, Li Xia knew what she was thinking. Xu had always felt that she had let Li Xia down, but Li Xia didn’t feel that way.UppTodat𝒆d fr𝒐m nô/v/e/lb(i)n.c(o)/m
“Mother, I’m very happy now,” Li Xia repeated over and over that she was doing well, to put Xu’s mind at ease.
After a month of thinking, Lu XuanNing finally decided on a name for the child: Lu Liucheng.
His nickname would be Cheng Cheng. This name was to commemorate their meeting in Liuzhou, which led to their marriage.
Since they didn’t hold a third-day celebration, many people came to the full-month celebration. After all, this was the Lu Family’s eldest great-grandson of the main line. Whether they knew the family or not, everyone wanted to attend the Lu Family’s full-month celebration. On the day of the celebration, more people came than expected. Fortunately, with the Old Madam in charge, nothing went wrong.
At one month, Li Xia was supposed to end her confinement, but Lu XuanNing was always worried about Li Xia’s health. After asking the imperial physician to examine her, he had Li Xia stay in confinement for a full 45 days. So for the full-month celebration, Li Xia still had to stay in the room. Luckily, the weather wasn’t too hot now, otherwise Li Xia would have torn the room apart.
Lu Liucheng was brought out by the Old Madam for everyone to see, then quickly taken back to the room. After a month, Lu Liucheng had filled out and become round. Paired with the green clothes Li Xia had chosen for him, he looked even more like a peeled egg, green and plump.
Li Xin adored children and didn’t mind the effort of holding Lu Liucheng until he needed to nurse, at which point she handed him over to the wet nurse to be fed.
Seeing Li Xin’s gaze following Lu Liucheng as he was taken away, Li Xia waved her hand in front of Li Xin’s eyes, saying, “Come back to earth.”
Li Xin snapped out of it and reached over to tuck in Li Xia’s blanket. “Xia Xia, I truly envy you.”
“Sister, sometimes the more desperately you want something, the less likely it is to come. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself,” Li Xia said, placing two pillows behind her back and leaning against them to relax.
