Even though he had arranged for some very capable men to protect Cassandra, Rufus could still not get his mind to rest. Out of worry, he got off work earlier than usual.
Cassandra had no idea what was going on, but she was happy to see Rufus home.
With his eyes fixed on Cassandra, Rufus couldn’t decide whether or not to tell her the truth. He didn’t want to scare her, but on the other hand, Charlie was a vindictive man. If he didn’t made her aware of what was happening, she wouldn’t be cautious enough. Her chances of getting attacked would increase drastically.
“Cassandra, don’t go out of the house until I tell you to. Just stay at home. Don’t go anywhere. Okay?” Rufus said seriously.
Confused, Cassandra asked, “Why?”
Rufus stroked his forehead with his hand. After hesitating for a while, he decided to tell her the truth, so she would stay alert.
“I don’t know why but somehow Charlie believes Amanda died because of us. I’m afraid he is trying to take revenge on us. You need to be very careful. Don’t go out unless absolutely necessary,” Rufus said.
“And if you want to go out, wait for me at home. I will come with you when I get back,” Rufus added slowly.
Cassandra was dumbstruck by the news. Obviously she hadn’t realized what was happening until just now. It wasn’t until quite a while later that she asked, “Why does he believe we caused her death?”
Stroking the back of her head gently, Rufus said in a soft voice, “Maybe somebody made up a story and fed it to him. Anyway, it’s a lie. But we have to guard ourselves against Charlie for the time being. He has been overwhelmed by the sorrow, and may possibly do something extreme.”
Cassandra nodded to him. “I see. I will be careful from now on,” she said.
Seeing her take him seriously, Rufus felt a little relieved.
Something came to Cassandra’s mind all of a sudden. She asked, “Will Charlie do
Falling from nobility, Zen Luo became a humble slave and served as a human punchbag for his former cousins. Inadvertently, he found a way to refine himself into a weapon and a legend started because of that. With a strong belief in never surrender, he strove for revenges and pursued big dreams. Warriors from various clans contended for hegemony and the world was stirred. Relying on the body that was comparable to a powerful weapon, Zen beat his numerous enemies on his way to the immortality. Would he succeed eventually?
I gave her a hand. I didn’t know she is your mother.”
Cassandra didn’t believe him at all. If he was one of the men appointed by Rufus to protect her mother, he would definitely have known who Edith was and hence would have followed her around. It wouldn’t have been surprising of him to rescue her at all.
Cassandra thought the truth might be that he hadn’t expected Edith to find out that he was helping her.
“Mom, where are you going now?” Cassandra asked. She didn’t trust the man a lot. She believed it was better to be skeptical in this situation.
However, Edith seemed to have developed a liking toward him. Smiling, she said, “I want to invite him for lunch at home to show my gratitude. Is that okay?”
Cassandra’s face changed in an instant. She tried to persuade Edith to change her mind, “Mom, if you want to invite him for lunch, why don’t we have lunch somewhere nearby? I know a good restaurant down this street. It is called Grand Restaurant. The food there is really good.”
When he heard Cassandra mention Grand Restaurant, the man shook his head. “No, thank you, Mrs. Luo. That restaurant is too expensive.”
With a smile at the corner of her mouth, Cassandra said, “Please accept our gratitude. Thank you for rescuing my mother.”
