Luo Qinghan’s pointed ears twitched, and he turned as Zhe Huo came in. Without any trace of anxiety, he waved the moonstone at her. “This fell out of your robe as I was putting it away.” He held it out to her. “Here.”
Zhe Huo took it weakly. “I was just tossing my clothes about the place as usual, huh…”
Qinghan nodded faintly, his petite little lips curving into a barely noticeable smile. “That stone is really pretty.”
“Yes, it is. Wu Shan gave it to me.” Saying his name reminded Zhe Huo that she ought to smooth things over between him and the boy. “Qinghan, Wu Shan is usually a really nice guy. Maybe it’s because you’re a fox demon, and you just showed up here all of a sudden, that’s why he seems to have certain misgivings about you. Give it time, and he’ll come to see what a good kid you are. Don’t worry about it.”
Qinghan blinked a few times. “Maybe he’s only nice to you.”
Zhe Huo stared at him, feeling a blush creep across her cheeks. “Don’t speak such nonsense! You’re only a child…”
“Alright. So you have no interest in him?”
This made her eyes boggle even more. “What are you suggesting!”
Qinghan watched her with unblinking eyes of azure blue. “Zhe Huo, you’re not interested in him, right?” he repeated.
Seeing that the boy was intent on getting a definite answer from her, she finally nodded in reply. “He’s a fellow disciple. I really look up to him!”
Qinghan sighed at this, and put his arms around her. “Don’t fall for him, Zhe Huo,” he whispered.
Zhe Huo didn’t know what to say to this. She supposed the boy had developed some enmity against him as well, and was afraid she’d side with Wu Shan against him? If that was the case, she thought it best to just nod along and agree with the boy.
The next day, another request was brought to them. Zhe Huo and Fei Zhao went down the mountain to take care of it, and they were exhausted by the time they returned. However, when they came back for something to eat, they found Qinghan sitting on the steps into the yard, his tiny form curled up into a ball, hugging his legs with his chin on his knees.
His ears perked up at the sound of their footsteps, and when he lifted his head, Zhe Huo saw tears upon his beautiful little face. His gorgeous eyes were brimming, fine droplets lingering upon his long lashes. He was biting his rose-red lips, as though holding in some terrible frustration.
The first thought in Zhe Huo’s mind was that someone had been picking on him. She rushed over to wipe his tears, her brow creased in wrath. “Qinghan, was somebody mean to you? I’ll take care of them!”
The boy shook his head, forlorn. He looked up at her through his tears, and sobbed, “Zhe Huo… I did something wrong. Will you forgive me?”
Zhe Huo stared for a moment, then loosed a great sigh of relief. “Really now, you gave me such a fright!” Curious, she added, “What did you do, then?”
Qinghan sniffled. “Promise me you won’t get mad.”
Seeing her lovely little thing crying as though there would be no more tomorrow, how could she even think about getting angry? She nodded her head immediately. “Sure, I promise. Okay?”
The boy rubbed his eyes, took her by the hand, and led her inside. When Zhe Huo saw what had happened, she was thunderstruck.
