The Goddess and the Ugly Duckling - Chapter 22
Xiaoya was so befuddled she couldn’t say a word.
Xiaoya didn’t needto think about it at all, replying, “I want to go. I don’t want to tell my family either. Lets go everywhere.”
N/A
Xiaoya stared at her textbook seriously, but only gossip left her lips: “Yeah. Then after we had dinner, she talked with my mother about life, about ideals, then she went back home.”
But just then, two knocks sounded outside Xiaoya’s door and Xiaoya’s mother called out to them, “Xiaoya, Lu Xiaobei, dinner’s ready.”
Xiaoya: “Sciences. You’re so good at biochemistry, it would be a pity if you didn’t choose it. Besides, there are a lot more majors in the sciences available, so it’d be easy to get into a good university and also getting a job after graduation.”
As soon as the bell rang, Mo Yichen saw Xiaoya sprint out the class like a whirlwind.
For Xiaoya, this was the first time she and Lu Xiaobei was this close, so much so, they could each feel the other’s breath.
Lu Xiaobei turned her head to look, the door handle twisting before opening by a crack. After feeling a gust of breeze, Xiaoya hid the phone behind her, using her body to block it.
“Captain, why did you just try to take my phone?” Xiaoya whispered.
She didn’t want to just be a passing acquaintance in Lu Xiaobei’s life, neither did she want to be a passing traveller in her gorgeous life. So that in the future, all Lu Xiaobei could recall from her was a vague image.
Lu Xiaobei walked straight outside, asking: “What’s wrong?” Xiaoya’s eyes were glistening, and a bit reddened, seeming as though she wanted to shed tears yet didn’t.
Seeing this, Lu Xiaobeui thought to herself: Folks like Xiaoya will never be able to cheat during exams. All it would take was just one glance from a teacher for them to find out.
Lu Xiaobei then immediately sprang forward, causing both her and Xiaoya to tumble on the bed, saying, “Where did you hide my stuff?” while at the same time trying to grab the phone behind Xiaoya’s back.
The “back door door god” then chimed, “Pre-exam is the peak season for confessions, you know?”
Mo Yichen: “Why didn’t you say that? I didn’t chose one as yet. You’re going to be separated from Captain too.”
Lu Xiaobei stroked her chin, with her then asking, “How could you not know.”
Lu Xiaobei then lowered her head slightly, enough to allow Xiaoya to feel the tip of her nose touching her own cheek before it shifted to the side, bit by bit, about to…
“Ah—”
Lu Xiaobei was still lying on the bed, one arm resting on the bed, propping her up, while the other was hooked around Xiaoya’s waist. Two pairs of eyes were locked with one another, and because Xiaoya was worked up and agitated not too long ago, her cheeks were all red and her hair was messy.
Lu Xiaobei knocked him on the head, saying, “Focus on studying properly, the exam is only a few days away.”
“It’s actually a good thing you came. I have something I want to ask you.” Seeing the doubt in Xiaoya’s eyes, Lu Xiaobei then asked, “For all these years you’ve been in school, have you ever skipped a class?”
“I don’t know. I want to study in the liberal arts field more, but my scores there and with science subjects are pretty similar. For history and other stuff, I rely mostly on the books I read occasionally, and never listened properly in class. But with science classes…” Xiaoya sighed before she continued, “If I choose liberal arts, I’ll be separated from you.”
Seeing this, Lu Xiaobeui thought to herself: Folks like Xiaoya will never be able to cheat during exams. All it would take was just one glance from a teacher for them to find out.
Xiaoya remained silent, feeling Mo Yichen’s questions were too unreasonable. What if she only meets with the captain only two or three times a year? She felt as though her questions involved problems she had never once considered.
Lu Xiaobei lifted her body a bit, then putting some distance between her and Xiaoya before replying, “Dummy, have you ever heard the saying sticking your head in the sandT/n: Thinking your hiding something but only deceiving yourself.?”
Xiaoya cried out.
“Yeah…” Mo Yichen then added, “but it’s different, the (relationship) status is different.”
Mo Yichen said there would come a day where you’ll have a career, a partner and maybe even a child.
“So… with both the Captain and I leaving, is there any difference in how you feel towards us?”
Lu Xiaobei then immediately sprang forward, causing both her and Xiaoya to tumble on the bed, saying, “Where did you hide my stuff?” while at the same time trying to grab the phone behind Xiaoya’s back.
Xiaoya: “???”
Xiaoya was so flustered, she forgot her priorities towards Lu Xiaobei and yelled: “Heyyy— Get off! I can’t give this to you.”
Lu Xiaobei knocked him on the head, saying, “Focus on studying properly, the exam is only a few days away.”
Xiaoya doesn;t have the type of personality that’s suited for pressuring her with questions. The more you ask her, the more she’d dwell on it, and be even more unwilling to talk. But if you keep your distance, she’d would be willing to share her thoughts with you instead.
Hey, don’t bring up my heartbreaking affairs. Captain said ‘I have to go visit my mom the day after my entrance exams, since I haven’t seen her for the year. So if there are no pressing matters here, I won’t return even during the holidays.’” Xiaoya then added, “It’s been almost three months! Captain won’t even be in the country, and I don’t have any money to go visit her.”
Xiaoya straightforwardly replied, “Your classmates are all poking their heads out the window, and some are staring at you.”
“So it seems you’ll be sending off two friends this summer, yeah?” Mo Yichen asked her.
Lu Xiaobei turned her head to look, the door handle twisting before opening by a crack. After feeling a gust of breeze, Xiaoya hid the phone behind her, using her body to block it.
Xiaoya didn’t needto think about it at all, replying, “I want to go. I don’t want to tell my family either. Lets go everywhere.”
“Hey, dinner’s ready!” Xiaoya’s mother just thought the two girls were playing around, giving her no real reason to be suspicious. “Go wash up the come out, alright.” After saying this, she turned and left.
Mo Yichen then asked: “I’m curious about one thing though, was that the first time your mom and Captain met?”
“I mean, is it like just ordinary friends leaving each other? Imagine if it was like we’ll never be by your side again, and you’d be living alone without one of us forever. Wo’d you miss then?”
Lu Xiaobei turned her head to look, the door handle twisting before opening by a crack. After feeling a gust of breeze, Xiaoya hid the phone behind her, using her body to block it.

“So… with both the Captain and I leaving, is there any difference in how you feel towards us?”
Is it possible you don’t want those things? I’m willing to give you tons of love—all of my love, so we can always be together, forever. Just me, no one else.
Lu Xiaobei walked straight outside, asking: “What’s wrong?” Xiaoya’s eyes were glistening, and a bit reddened, seeming as though she wanted to shed tears yet didn’t.
This made Xiaoya zip her lips, giving the silent treatment for a while. But she couldn’t hold it, turning to Mo Yichen to ask, “Yichen, are you going to chose the arts of sciences courses next semester?”
For Xiaoya, this was the first time she and Lu Xiaobei was this close, so much so, they could each feel the other’s breath.
To which the sullen Xiaoya replied: “Yeah.”
“Yeah…” Mo Yichen then added, “but it’s different, the (relationship) status is different.”
Xiaoya: “What difference in her status is there?”
Xiaoya: “???”
Lu Xiaobei stroked her chin, with her then asking, “How could you not know.”
Second Update
After Lu Xiaobei returned to her class, the third year “door god”T/n: door god is just the nickname for the kid guarding the door. Based on actual door guardians who guard doors against evil spirits. He might be a sturdy looking guy too. looked at Lu Xiaobei and asked, “Captain, is the girl who came to find you a first year or second year? She’s really pretty! Does she have a boyfriend?”
Lu Xiaobei then lowered her head slightly, enough to allow Xiaoya to feel the tip of her nose touching her own cheek before it shifted to the side, bit by bit, about to…
“Yes, yes, yes. I know.” Mo Yichen replied mechanically.
Mo Yichen couldn’t help but hold her head in her palm, “You really are too dumb sometimes. I can’t just tell you outright.”
“Our teacher told us the schedule for the college entrance exams and we have the day before the exams off.” Lu Xiaobei then asked, “Can we go hang out together on that day? It should be a Thursday, so you can ask your teacher for sick leave and if you want to tell your folks, you can, but if you don’t, you won’t. So you want to go?”
Lu Xiaobei then grumbled, “Your mom just never thought you’d be dumb enough to hide a phone in there.”
To which the sullen Xiaoya replied: “Yeah.”
“It’s actually a good thing you came. I have something I want to ask you.” Seeing the doubt in Xiaoya’s eyes, Lu Xiaobei then asked, “For all these years you’ve been in school, have you ever skipped a class?”
Truthfully, Xiaoya did have something else she wanted to ask the captain right then, she wanted to ask: ‘Captain, why are you so good to me?’ As much as Xiaoya was full of gratitude towards her, she also felt something she could not put into words, along with feeling wronged. ‘But I want you to always be good to me, so what do I do?’
“Captain, why did you just try to take my phone?” Xiaoya whispered.
“So it seems you’ll be sending off two friends this summer, yeah?” Mo Yichen asked her.
Gradually, Lu Xiaobei’s infatuation filled eyes focused, the faint traces of blue within them, a blue resembling the sky as well as the sea, fading away into the darkness.

Lu Xiaobei walked straight outside, asking: “What’s wrong?” Xiaoya’s eyes were glistening, and a bit reddened, seeming as though she wanted to shed tears yet didn’t.
Xiaoya suddenly realised it, saying, “I was almost caught just now?” After saying this, she again hid her phone in the tissue box.
Lu Xiaobei simply ignored him, walking back to the middle of the classroom.
Xiaoya then said: “You should go back, class will be starting soon. I need time to get back to my floor too.” Xiaoya’s school had six floors, and the first years, second years and third years all took up two floors each. There are six classes on each floor, and in the smaller Liberal Arts building next door, it can only fit four classes.
“Why are you curious about something like that? It was just your average friend coming over to hang out situation, not a ‘meet the parents’T/n: bring your partner home to meet the folks for the first time. one.”
“That is a good reason.” After this, Lu Xiaobei no longer pushed the matter.

It made her scared, terrified, but more than that she was overwhelmed by the anxiety from those burning questions.

Xiaoya suddenly realised it, saying, “I was almost caught just now?” After saying this, she again hid her phone in the tissue box.
A seed had already taken root in Xiaoya’s heart, but before it grew into a towering tree, she turned her eyes away from it.
Xiaoya then defended: “It’s not dumb, it’s convenient. Now, come on, let’s go eat dinner.”
Xiaoya was so befuddled she couldn’t say a word.

“So the captain went to your house yesterday?” In the morning self-study session, the classroom was filled with the voices of students reading, so taking advantage of this chance, pretending their gossiping voices belonged to the sea of studious ones, the two fished on troubled waters.
Xiaoya: “I wanted to see you, so I just came.”
At some point, Mr. Nan had even entered the classroom, inspected it and left, but Xiaoya hadn’t noticed at all.
Lu Xiaobei then lowered her head slightly, enough to allow Xiaoya to feel the tip of her nose touching her own cheek before it shifted to the side, bit by bit, about to…

“I just want to focus on my studies. That way, in the future, when I have the time and the money, I can go find Captain no matter where she is and see her then.” Xiaoya’s words were spoken casually, having no confidence behind them.

There was no doubt in XIaoya’s heart who the answer to this question was, but she didn’t want to hurt Mo Yichen’s feelings, and so replied: “It’s different! You and I will just be in different classes, but still in the same school. Captain… Captain will be going really really far away from me.”
Lu Xiaobei turned her head to look, the door handle twisting before opening by a crack. After feeling a gust of breeze, Xiaoya hid the phone behind her, using her body to block it.
Mo Yichen then stated, frost in her tone, “But at that time, Captain would already have her own career, a partner, and even a child. You say you’re will to go across the see to find her, but even if you are in the same city, or the same street, she might not have the time to accompany you.”
“Why are you curious about something like that? It was just your average friend coming over to hang out situation, not a ‘meet the parents’T/n: bring your partner home to meet the folks for the first time. one.”
For Xiaoya, this was the first time she and Lu Xiaobei was this close, so much so, they could each feel the other’s breath.
“The liberal arts classes are in another building, and after school the exit will be from the back. So unless we go out of our own way, it’s unlikely we’d run into one another.” Mo Yichen then added: “This is only a supposition. But does Captain leaving only feel like a regular parting of friends? Is it just like when you were separated from your junior high school friends? Never meeting again, or only seeing one another two to three times a year.”

Lu Xiaobei was sitting in the third row, upon turning her head, she saw a dazed Xiaoya standing outside the back door of her classroom. Her expression was blank, seeming as if she was wronged.
“Yes, yes, yes. I know.” Mo Yichen replied mechanically.

Mo Yichen said there would come a day where you’ll have a career, a partner and maybe even a child.
I want to repay you with even betting things in return. I want you see how I’m feeling right now, so what do I do?

Xiaya relied solely on curage when she ran there, but once she saw Lu Xiaobei’s face, her entire being had calmed and her reason had returned, making her reply simply, “I don’t know.”
Mo Yichen: “But… why does it sound a though you don’t want to study the sciences? I heard the biology teacher and chemistry teachers talking about you that day, they said you have a lot of potential, and that if you work hard in your second year you might be able to secure a place in a 985 universityT/n: Project 985, are State created elite universities, Fudan University, mentioned in the C9 “Ivy League colleges” is one of them..”

There was no doubt in XIaoya’s heart who the answer to this question was, but she didn’t want to hurt Mo Yichen’s feelings, and so replied: “It’s different! You and I will just be in different classes, but still in the same school. Captain… Captain will be going really really far away from me.”
Xiaoya: “???”
Lu Xiaobei then grumbled, “Your mom just never thought you’d be dumb enough to hide a phone in there.”
As soon as the bell rang, Mo Yichen saw Xiaoya sprint out the class like a whirlwind.
The “back door door god” then chimed, “Pre-exam is the peak season for confessions, you know?”
Lu Xiaobei knocked him on the head, saying, “Focus on studying properly, the exam is only a few days away.”
“I just want to focus on my studies. That way, in the future, when I have the time and the money, I can go find Captain no matter where she is and see her then.” Xiaoya’s words were spoken casually, having no confidence behind them.
Lu Xiaobei lifted her body a bit, then putting some distance between her and Xiaoya before replying, “Dummy, have you ever heard the saying sticking your head in the sandT/n: Thinking your hiding something but only deceiving yourself.?”
Xiaoya remained silent, feeling Mo Yichen’s questions were too unreasonable. What if she only meets with the captain only two or three times a year? She felt as though her questions involved problems she had never once considered.
Xiaoya cried out.
“So it seems you’ll be sending off two friends this summer, yeah?” Mo Yichen asked her.
Without looking behind her, Lu Xiaobei simply stated, “When you’re with me, you have to get used to it.”
It made her scared, terrified, but more than that she was overwhelmed by the anxiety from those burning questions.
Xiaoya straightforwardly replied, “Your classmates are all poking their heads out the window, and some are staring at you.”
A seed had already taken root in Xiaoya’s heart, but before it grew into a towering tree, she turned her eyes away from it.
“Ah—”
Is it possible you don’t want those things? I’m willing to give you tons of love—all of my love, so we can always be together, forever. Just me, no one else.
Xiaoya: “What difference in her status is there?”
“I just want to focus on my studies. That way, in the future, when I have the time and the money, I can go find Captain no matter where she is and see her then.” Xiaoya’s words were spoken casually, having no confidence behind them.
Lu Xiaobei walked straight outside, asking: “What’s wrong?” Xiaoya’s eyes were glistening, and a bit reddened, seeming as though she wanted to shed tears yet didn’t.
There was no doubt in XIaoya’s heart who the answer to this question was, but she didn’t want to hurt Mo Yichen’s feelings, and so replied: “It’s different! You and I will just be in different classes, but still in the same school. Captain… Captain will be going really really far away from me.”
She didn’t want to just be a passing acquaintance in Lu Xiaobei’s life, neither did she want to be a passing traveller in her gorgeous life. So that in the future, all Lu Xiaobei could recall from her was a vague image.
It made her scared, terrified, but more than that she was overwhelmed by the anxiety from those burning questions.
As soon as the bell rang, Mo Yichen saw Xiaoya sprint out the class like a whirlwind.
Mo Yichen: “Why didn’t you say that? I didn’t chose one as yet. You’re going to be separated from Captain too.”
Lu Xiaobei turned her head to look, the door handle twisting before opening by a crack. After feeling a gust of breeze, Xiaoya hid the phone behind her, using her body to block it.
“It’s actually a good thing you came. I have something I want to ask you.” Seeing the doubt in Xiaoya’s eyes, Lu Xiaobei then asked, “For all these years you’ve been in school, have you ever skipped a class?”
Mo Yichen then stated, frost in her tone, “But at that time, Captain would already have her own career, a partner, and even a child. You say you’re will to go across the see to find her, but even if you are in the same city, or the same street, she might not have the time to accompany you.”
“Why are you guys acting like this? Even last night, Captain said I was dumb.” Xiaoya then continued, “I’m expected to improve by three hundred places this semester compared to my last, you know?!”
Her words made Xiaoya’s hands ball into fists, tightly holding them while her eyes remained fixed on the table and not a word leaving her lips.
Lu Xiaobei stroked her chin, with her then asking, “How could you not know.”
Xiaoya was so befuddled she couldn’t say a word.
Xiaoya was so befuddled she couldn’t say a word.
At some point, Mr. Nan had even entered the classroom, inspected it and left, but Xiaoya hadn’t noticed at all.

He might be a sturdy looking guy too. looked at Lu Xiaobei and asked, “Captain, is the girl who came to find you a first year or second year? She’s really pretty! Does she have a boyfriend?”
As soon as the bell rang, Mo Yichen saw Xiaoya sprint out the class like a whirlwind.

Mo Yichen: “What do you think?”
But just then, two knocks sounded outside Xiaoya’s door and Xiaoya’s mother called out to them, “Xiaoya, Lu Xiaobei, dinner’s ready.”
This made Xiaoya zip her lips, giving the silent treatment for a while. But she couldn’t hold it, turning to Mo Yichen to ask, “Yichen, are you going to chose the arts of sciences courses next semester?”
Mo Yichen: “What do you think?”
She didn’t want to just be a passing acquaintance in Lu Xiaobei’s life, neither did she want to be a passing traveller in her gorgeous life. So that in the future, all Lu Xiaobei could recall from her was a vague image.
“Captain, someone is looking for you!”
A seed had already taken root in Xiaoya’s heart, but before it grew into a towering tree, she turned her eyes away from it.
Xiaoya was so befuddled she couldn’t say a word.
Lu Xiaobei was sitting in the third row, upon turning her head, she saw a dazed Xiaoya standing outside the back door of her classroom. Her expression was blank, seeming as if she was wronged.
Mo Yichen said there would come a day where you’ll have a career, a partner and maybe even a child.
Xiaoya doesn;t have the type of personality that’s suited for pressuring her with questions. The more you ask her, the more she’d dwell on it, and be even more unwilling to talk. But if you keep your distance, she’d would be willing to share her thoughts with you instead.
“Yes, yes, yes. I know.” Mo Yichen replied mechanically.
Lu Xiaobei was happy Xiaoya had come to visit her of her own accord, but she also knew Xiaoya wasn’t the type to go visit the temple for no reason, so she quietly asked the student around her to let her pass.

“Ah—”
“Captain, why did you just try to take my phone?” Xiaoya whispered.
…..
“Why are you guys acting like this? Even last night, Captain said I was dumb.” Xiaoya then continued, “I’m expected to improve by three hundred places this semester compared to my last, you know?!”
Xiaya relied solely on curage when she ran there, but once she saw Lu Xiaobei’s face, her entire being had calmed and her reason had returned, making her reply simply, “I don’t know.”
Xiaoya: “No, I haven’t.”
Lu Xiaobei stroked her chin, with her then asking, “How could you not know.”
“Hey, dinner’s ready!” Xiaoya’s mother just thought the two girls were playing around, giving her no real reason to be suspicious. “Go wash up the come out, alright.” After saying this, she turned and left.
Mo Yichen: “What do you think?”
Xiaoya stared at her textbook seriously, but only gossip left her lips: “Yeah. Then after we had dinner, she talked with my mother about life, about ideals, then she went back home.”
“Captain, why did you just try to take my phone?” Xiaoya whispered.
Xiaoya: “I wanted to see you, so I just came.”
“Yes, yes, yes. I know.” Mo Yichen replied mechanically.
Xiaoya: “No, I haven’t.”
Xiaoya was so flustered, she forgot her priorities towards Lu Xiaobei and yelled: “Heyyy— Get off! I can’t give this to you.”
“Why are you curious about something like that? It was just your average friend coming over to hang out situation, not a ‘meet the parents’T/n: bring your partner home to meet the folks for the first time. one.”
“That is a good reason.” After this, Lu Xiaobei no longer pushed the matter.
Gradually, Lu Xiaobei’s infatuation filled eyes focused, the faint traces of blue within them, a blue resembling the sky as well as the sea, fading away into the darkness.

Xiaoya: “No, I haven’t.”
Xiaoya then defended: “It’s not dumb, it’s convenient. Now, come on, let’s go eat dinner.”
Lu Xiaobei then immediately sprang forward, causing both her and Xiaoya to tumble on the bed, saying, “Where did you hide my stuff?” while at the same time trying to grab the phone behind Xiaoya’s back.
Xiaoya: “What difference in her status is there?”
“It’s actually a good thing you came. I have something I want to ask you.” Seeing the doubt in Xiaoya’s eyes, Lu Xiaobei then asked, “For all these years you’ve been in school, have you ever skipped a class?”

Xiaoya kept her eyes glued to Lu Xiaobei as she entered her classroom, past the noisy and quarrelling classmates around her, then back to her seat at the centre of the class. She didn’t want to move a single step from her position, wanting to stay there and continue watching her like that.
“I mean, is it like just ordinary friends leaving each other? Imagine if it was like we’ll never be by your side again, and you’d be living alone without one of us forever. Wo’d you miss then?”
