The Goddess and the Ugly Duckling - Chapter 26
What’s it like being friends with a goddess?
Lu Xiaobei: “Well, actually, I don’t really care which way or the other where I attend university. So, tell me, is there any particular reason I should chose to go to one here?”
◈◇◈
Even on such a hot summer day, eve with her heart wound up in a tizzy, in that vast crowd, Xiaoya still thought that slender and beautiful was shining.
Xiaoya: “It’s not the same thing. Besides, when you start university in this country, it’ll be a long time before you can spend time with Aunty.”
Lu Xiaobei then asked, “Do you want to come send me off tomorrow?”
Xiaoya nodded, burying her head in Lu Xiaobei’s arms.

Yu Xiaoya’s reply:
Hey, I might not be the best person to answer this question any more. The relationship between my goddess and me is no longer one of purely friendship.
◈◇◈
For the three days of the college entrance exams, to the students sitting them, everything happened in the blink of an eye; but for the parents waiting for them outside, every passing minute—every passing second, seemed to last an eternity.
I don’t get it at all.
After running over to Lu Xiaobei, Xiaoya grabbed the other girl’s arms, anxiously asking, “Captain, how was the exam, did you do okay?”
I need to call the OP! I need to call that goddess! OP, can you tell me the goddess’ number so I can call?!
Xiaoya didn’t answer, only twirling the the straw she held in her hand around in her drink.

The sort-haired girl then said to Xiaoya, “It’s a good thing I had you to help me, if I had to do this alone… god help me. I seriously never expected it’d be so much work.”

Lu Xiaobei laughed, asking in turn, “No wonder you were so nervous about my exams. Are you scared I’ll leave for the Netherlands if I don’t do well?”
The short-haired girl then added, “Before in class, some people said you were no good, I’m happy I didn’t totally believe them. I think you’re totally a good person now.” When meeting with the parents, she spoke respectfully; and even though the sun was hot, she never once complained.

Xiaoya’s heart shook momentarily upon hearing her request. If not for her own parents finding out the last time she had skipped, and the trauma she got because of it still being very much there, she would’ve said yes to Lu Xiaobei without a doubt.
Lu Xiaobei then brushed the hair from Xiaoya’s forehead, asking, “What did you do? Why is your face so red? Did you get sunburned? Didn’t I tell you to apply sunscreen every two hours!”
Guilty, Xiaoya didn’t dare directly answer Lu Xiaobei, so instead said, “I rubbed some on before I came out earlier, but… then things got super busy for the volunteers.” After which, she abruptly changed the topic, “I’m like really hungry. All the school lunch-box had in was cabbage and meatballs, and it tasted like they barely put any salt in, so I didn’t eat much.”
Xiaoya nodded, burying her head in Lu Xiaobei’s arms.

Towards her, Lu Xiaobei had no other choice, saying, “I know a restaurant not far from the school that’s pretty good. There’s also a pharmacy nearby, we need to put some ointment on your face.”
Hearing this, Xiaoya felt at ease, since the captain said it was fine. At the very least, she was in the top ten of her grade at the very least and was expected to be one of the top two.
When Xiaoya dragged Lu Xiaobei from the school, she had completely forgotten all about her classmates.
Lu Xiaobei then brushed the hair from Xiaoya’s forehead, asking, “What did you do? Why is your face so red? Did you get sunburned? Didn’t I tell you to apply sunscreen every two hours!”
Xiaoya didn’t answer, only twirling the the straw she held in her hand around in her drink.
Lu Xiaobei: “Well, actually, I don’t really care which way or the other where I attend university. So, tell me, is there any particular reason I should chose to go to one here?”
After running over to Lu Xiaobei, Xiaoya grabbed the other girl’s arms, anxiously asking, “Captain, how was the exam, did you do okay?”
Xiaoya: “It’s not the same thing. Besides, when you start university in this country, it’ll be a long time before you can spend time with Aunty.”
That girl the the short hair, still sat there on the big stone, her jaw left hanging as she watch Lu Xiaobei and Xiaoya walk further and further away.

But instead, she replied, “No, I can’t. I have to go to class.”
Isn’t Lu Xiaobei our school’s goddess?! How the heck did I never hear about her and Xiaoya knowing each other?! They even seem really close!
The short-haired girl kept making small talk while watching the agitated parents and the tired examinees. Suddenly, the short-haired noticed a girl sporting a faux-hawk, lazily carrying a clear pencil case in one hand while the other was stuffed in her pocket. It didn’t seem at all like if she had just come from the battlefield known as the college entrance exams, instead it appeared she had just gone to do some insignificant thing.

Lu Xiaobei: “She has a lot of friends over there, she’s living a full life.”

“I really jealous of you, you know? Your exams are over and you’re all free, plus, you got an extra long vacation.” Xiaoya regained her courage, asking Lu Xiaobei, “So, do you want to go out again on Saturday?”
That girl the the short hair, still sat there on the big stone, her jaw left hanging as she watch Lu Xiaobei and Xiaoya walk further and further away.
Even though I didn’t want to eat any dog food, knowing the OP really isn’t going to put any does make me a bit upset.
^You’re not alone either. High school kids are out there finding goddesses and I’m still over here single. The amount of sadness I feel is like the Yellow River, surging endlessly…
Lu Xiaobei carefully applied the ointment to Xiaoya’s face on the places where she was sunburned, scolding her gently, “Only this once, don;t let it happen again, okay?”
Parents saw the two young girls running all over the place, panting, so it was not easy to make things difficult, and most cooperated and paired their cars further away.
Lu Xiaobei, trying to tempt her, then asked, “Want to skip class again like last time?”
Xiaoya: “I know, I know. Anyway, you should hurry up and sit down, Captain. You’ve been taking exams all day.”

When the last exam bell finally rung, Xiaoya and the other girl from her class no longer had to take care of the cars at the school gate, they could no longer control it. The two girls now plopped themselves on a big rock, not minding at all if it was hot as they both couldn’t currently lift even a finger.
Lu Xiaobei never expected that she and Xiaoya would’ve gotten together so soon, either. Nor that both would end up having to separate right as they just confessed, she didn’t want then to part. “Or, I could just… not go?”

Xiaoya had asked Mr. Nan to work as a volunteer during the three days of the college entrance exams, saying she wanted to experience the college entrance exam atmosphere beforehand. But even though Xiaoya applied a bit late, Mr. Nan arranged a post for her out of consideration for the top students.
Xiaoya didn’t answer, only twirling the the straw she held in her hand around in her drink.

Lu Xiaobei felt her sleeves grew a bit damp, but she pretended not to notice it, only urging the one in her arms, “I’ll be thinking about you every day, and I’ll message you everyday, alright? While looking at the person, the short-haired girl said to Xiaoya, “Have you ever seen her? That’s Lu Xiaobei, she is my goddess! I really hope she can become the top student in our school this year.”

Lu Xiaobei: “I’ll be flying out to the capital, then switch flights to the Netherlands.”

Hey, I might not be the best person to answer this question any more. The relationship between my goddess and me is no longer one of purely friendship.

Xiaoya jerked her head upwards, blurting out, “No.”
Hearing something was wrong by the tone of Xiaoya’s voice, Lu Xiaobei realised she had taken her joke too far. She made her way to the other side of the soft chair quickly, hugging Xiaoya, saying apologetically, “I’m sorry, I was wrong. Even if I was planning to not attend university here, for you, I would stay here. If you’re not there, how could I have any fun?”
But instead, she replied, “No, I can’t. I have to go to class.”

The short-haired girl then added, “Before in class, some people said you were no good, I’m happy I didn’t totally believe them. I think you’re totally a good person now.” When meeting with the parents, she spoke respectfully; and even though the sun was hot, she never once complained.
