The Harukian Chronicler - Chapter 4
That was a surprise that brought me crashing back to the surface of my mind, seeing a name that I was not expecting, in the new life software; on a planet that was not Earth. My head leaned in my hand with a look of disbelief spread on me, I was sure, Karen gave me a sideways glance when I stopped typing and selecting things.
“Mr. Jacobson, why is it you stopped working on your new life? We don’t really have much of a deadline, but it would be good if it was done this century, or things would refresh.” I glanced over to my case worker with a bit of a listless expression; so that was a bit of a deadline if you could call one such. Sighing softly, I turn the laptop back towards her and point at the name of the woman I had selected to be my mother;
“The reason I stopped is due to the family name of this woman, as it’s something that should not be here. My family name right now is Jacobson due to members of my family wanting to blend into society easier. This was around the time current Modern society was emerging into the world.” I scratched the back of my head as I told her all of this; “But before that, we were Haruk, members of a clan of people from different races, cultures, creeds, beliefs. We are… were Keepers, by the stories pa.s.sed down from our elders we had three branches; Grave-keeper, Gate-keeper, and Geas-keeper. My family line directly were Grave-keepers, my grandfather introduced me into family around the age of eight; that was an initiation I wouldn’t want to do again.” I could feel my eyes watering at the thoughts of how my grandfather would tell us children about the duty of our family back in the day, only to be shunned by everyone; “We Grave-keepers would help prepare the dead for the journey to the afterlife… help the family grieve for the deceased, go through the graveyards to clean around the tombstones, and we would even talk to those who were lonely. It was due to this that we were shunned though; many people considered us untouchable or secret necromancers due to us spending our time with the dead. So, we decided to change our name to Jacobson and move away from our ancestral home to try and do something different with our destinies.”
Karen’s eyes looked at the name then back towards me as I explained the background of my family name, turning the laptop back towards me so I can continue my work; “Mr. Jacobson, there’s a good reason for that really. The name Haruk and the belief structure that you just stated… they originated on Agenai. It was the work of members of the family tricked to move to Earth that they started the name there; which was only a belief. On Agenai, those three branches actually protect various threads that keep certain aspects of the world at balance; and the Haruk are not the only ones, there are a few more.”
Well, that information was of course going to cause me to be struck dumb for a few minutes; it’s kind of odd if you think about it, as a smile spreads across my face. I continues to select Indra as my mother, and as I see the confirmation screen, inside my heart I realized… I am finally coming home.
