The Heiress - Chapter 4
Waking up at 4 o’clock in the morning, she made herself some tea and then went down the basement to work out. She found a new car which she guessed was the one she asked for. After working out, she calmly prepared herself for work and went out.
The bold words ‘CHENG CORP’. greeted the entrance of the building. After parking her car, she went inside. She was composed and unvexed by how grand the building was. It was, after all, a common environment for her.
“Greetings Ms. Lin, welcome to Cheng Corp. I am Cassandra. This way please” Hui Yin smiled politely at the former secretary who greeted her at the entrance. Although she wore glasses, it didn’t mask how gorgeous she was. She noticed the stares of the people around them but paid no heed to it. She didn’t bother tinkering with her facial features since she knew that nobody knew she was an heiress.
“As you can see, I sorted out all the things which needs to be tended to. This is a pager, whenever it rings, that would mean the president is calling for you. Well, that is all, any questions?”
“what are the president’s preferences in food?”
“he hates celery, any other than that, I have not taken note of. I advice you not to flirt with him if you want to keep your job, I’ve only lasted a month here myself. But I guess you’ll be fine here, you don’t seem friendly anyway” she said with an awkward smile
“mmm, I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you”
“good luck”
When the door was shut, she sighed. She never thought that secretaries would also flirt with the president, she found is disdainful.
‘I guess I’d have to take not of what he likes and dislikes then.’ With that in thought she immersed herself in the stockpile of paperwork. In 2 hours, she finished encoding everything in the computer. Her typing speed was 1200 words per minute. Just as she was planning to walk around
Ding~
her pager rang.
In less than a minute, she reached the CEO’s office and knocked before she entered. It was a common ettiquete she learned from her father’s secretary.
“come in” a cold and distant voice sounded
she pushed the door and lowered her head.
“Good morning Mr. Cheng, I am Anna Lin” she was straighforward and polite at the same time.
“mmm. You didn’t come early” he said. without looking up, she judged from the tone of his voice that what he meant was ‘you didn’t come report for duty earlier’.
“My apologies Mr. Cheng, I wasn’t sure if it would be fine to greet you when you didn’t call for me.”
“mmm” he nodded
“coffee”
“right away Mr. Cheng”
she inwardly sighed, it helped her to know that her boss didn’t like talking, that way she wouldn’t be forced to talk too much either.
She went to prepare his coffee in the small kitchen inside his office. Without knowing his taste, she made it according to how she usually does for her dad.
Placing the coffee on his table, she took a few steps back and lowered her head once again. She didn’t even try to get a glimpse on what her boss looked like since she wasn’t interested in the least. She just thought that he was an old man.
She felt his eyes trained on her.
He took a sip of the coffee. He didn’t say anything nor complain about the taste.
“Schedule?”
She lifted her head, looking at him for the first time, and automatically stated his schedule.
“You have a meeting with Mr. Julian Dallas in exactly 30 minutes from now. A board meeting at 12 pm, a flight to France:8 pm, and a dinner meeting with the CEO of CHARMS AND PEARLS INC. at 10.” She enumerated his schedule calmly and precisely, without batting a single eyelid. She didn’t need to check her notes for it since practically everything she heard or saw once, would be embedded in her mind.
He gave her a questioning look.
” that is all Mr. Cheng”
Only now did she realize that he wasn’t old at all. Instead, he had a clean profile; piercing dark grey eyes that were unfathomable, a shaved, chiseled face, and straight eyebrows. A single glance at his cold profile would clearly make the hearts of the mass flutter. How much more when he smiles? But of course she would never say this out loud, she in reality just had a poker face on.
‘Now I know why’ she smiled inwardly at the thought.
“go” was the only word he said
“yes Mr. Cheng.” with a bow, she turned her heel and walked out the door. The pair of eyes not leaving her till she got out. Clearly, this Mr. Cheng being spoken of was observing her as well.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
“Mr. Cheng, Mr. Julian has arrived”
“en”
she lowered her head and followed him out.
“Please be seated, Mr. Julian.”
Hui Yin prepared some tea and snacks and placed them on the table. She took a few steps back and kept her head down.
He didn’t question what she did, instead, he only looked at her for a second and proceeded to listen to Mr. Julian.
“Mr. Cheng, I have made these designs for the rings. Please take a look” Mr. Julian, a fat, middle aged man said as he placed a folder and slid it slowly across the table.
Cheng Ming-ha took a look at the designs, after a while, he closed it.
“Not good” was the short statement he gave
“ah? what’s not good Mr. Cheng? Thedesigns?”
“price”
“The price for the rings?” Mr. Cheng started to frown, Hui Yin noticed it. Clearly he didn’t like explaining
“If I may sir, Mr. Cheng meant that the prices of the materials used for the rings are too
high for a design so plain” once again, she felt his gaze on her
“Who told you to talk?!!” roared Mr. Julian
“shut up” the words came out clear and concise from Cheng Ming-ha.
“See? Mr. Cheng said to shut up. A mere secretary does not know her bounds” he was pleased with the thought he put her in place
She just kept silent.
“what are your thoughts?” Mr. Cheng asked. He asked her in chinese. The man who didn’t know Chinese clearly was dumbfounded.
“What? I’m sorry Mr. Cheng, I can’t understand you” hearing that she understood that he was speaking to her. She didn’t look like a normal Chinese citizen because of her golden hair, in fact, she looked like a foreigner. She just put in thought that he saw her resume.
In a fluent Chinese, she said “Based on my research, this brand focuses more on using sterling silver in making jewelries, here in the document says gold. Furthermore, the budget of the materials in the document costs more than that of diamonds which clearly means money would be cheated if this were to be approved. Only about 40% of the overall value would be needed to complete this project.”
“en” he said while pushing the document back to Mr. Julian
“wha-” Mr. Julian was about to ask when Mr. Cheng cut him off
“Not doing it”
“What? Why Mr. Cheng?” he grit his teeth and asked politely
“Send him out” she followed his orders
“This way please Mr. Julian”
“Mr. Cheng, I’m sorry. I will do this properly, please give me another chance” he begged but was only given a harsh glare. With that he thought ‘it’s over’ and walked out with a hunched back.
“Board meeting. Now”
“yes Mr. Cheng”
