The Hero System - Chapter 1
In Cosan City, Rivercrow school. Feb 8, 2018.
On the school’s roof, you can see four youths there. Three burly youths were bashing a slim youth with glasses. The slim youth had a nosebleed and was lying on the ground taking the hits.
“Hey, leave him alone!” Suddenly, the roof’s door opened and a thin youth with black hair and green eyes walked into the group and yelled.
“Tsk, it’s crazy Jonah again. Okay, boys, you know what to do.” The biggest of the three youths, who seemed the leader, sneered at this. He seemed quite used to it.
Ten minutes later, the two slim youths were lying on the floor. The other three burly youths were breathing hurriedly. The youth named Jonah had bruises all over his body. He had obviously been in a rough fight.
“Tsk, crazy bastard. I got hungry, let’s go.” The leader said and the group left the roof leaving only the two youths.
“I told you to leave me alone! What’s the use of facing them and getting beaten up every time?” The thin youth with glasses said to Jonah.
“Don’t say that, Leo. Friends help each other. Even by just getting beaten up.” Jonah said with a grin.
Leo sighed. This wasn’t the only time this happened. Since kindergarten, this has always been the same. He gets bullied, Jonah stands against them, both of them gets beaten.
“Okay, it’s time to go! Let’s head home!” Jonah said as he extended his hand toward Leo. Leo looked at him and sighed before reaching out.
The two separated at the train station. Jonah took the train toward the Old District. He sat there in the train with his bruised body, leaning against the window.
‘I need to find a way to stop those bullies once and for good.’ Jonah thought.
He had always tried to help his friends if they need him. But he realized that getting beaten up every single time was meaningless. He pondered a way out as he waited for the train to reach his station.
The Old District was a residential area with cheap apartments’ prices. Before his father’s death, they used to live in another district. However, things went south after he left them.
Jonah’s relatives took their shop after many threats. His mother, with no other way, gave in and started to work on her own. However, the Old District was all she could afford to rent.
“Mom, I’m home!”
Jonah said as he walked in. He took off his bag and placed it beneath the sofa. Their apartment had only one room, a kitchen, and a bathroom.
“Oh, Jonah. Welcome back.” A woman walked out of the kitchen. She had a black hair and dark brown eyes.
Jonah could feel his heart hurt at the sight of his mother. His mother, Mia, was only 35 this year. However, she looked older because of her unhealthy pale face.
“Mom, don’t overwork yourself. Stop taking extra hours!”
Jonah said with a concerned face. He knew his mother worked extra, not because they didn’t have enough money, but to save money for his college.
“I know. You don’t need to worry. Here, eat.” His mother patted his hair before she handed over a plate of spaghetti and meat pieces. Jonah took the plate and started digging in.
“Mom. You should go to sleep before your shift! I’ll take care of the chores, just go rest!” Jonah said as he finished his food and took the plate to the kitchen.
“Mm.” His mother nodded. She then went to the bed and lied down sleeping.
Jonah washed the dishes, cleaned the house, and took out the trash. He then gathered their clothes and went to the roof of the apartment complex to wash them and hang them to dry.
After washing the clothes, Jonah was now hanging the clothes on the ropes to dry.
Whooooooooshhhhh BOOOOOOOOOM!!
Jonah was startled by a sudden object landing on the rooftop. He was scared out and his heartbeat rate rose. He then turned around to look at the object.
However, before the dust settled down. A person walked out of the dust cloud. It was an expressionless young man with a black hair and blue eyes. He seemed to not have noticed Jonah’s presence.
“A-are you okay?” Jonah was scared but he couldn’t help but ask. ‘How did a person land here? Isn’t this building a six-story complex?’
The young man now noticed Jonah’s presence. He turned around and looked at Jonah with a surprised expression.
‘How can this kid see me? No good. I can’t get exposed before my mission end.’ The young man thought. He then lifted his hand and it slightly trembled. Jonah was confused, what was this young man doing?
“Do you need hel”
Jonah didn’t continue his words because he felt something was pushing him backward. The next moment, Jonah could see the rooftop and the expressionless young man getting further and further away.
Jonah turned around to see himself flying midair above the street nearby. His eyes went wide open and he could hardly breathe. He wanted to scream for help but for some reason, no voice came out.
‘Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit! Am I going to die? No! NO! NO! My mom! Leo! They still need me!’ In the face of death, Jonah suddenly remembered his mom and his only friend. Tears started floating out.
The pavement was getting closer and closer but Jonah felt powerless to do anything. It felt like an eternity, and like the fraction of a second at the same time.
Pain. Extreme pain spread all over his body the next moment. He could see his vision turn red. Probably from the blood.
“Mom I don’t want to die’ Jonah said with a hoarse voice.
[System initiate. Connecting]
Before his consciousness faded, Jonah haired an electronic voice. ‘System?’
[Connection to user successful. Jonah Regon, The Hero System has been successfully installed.]
[Warning: User’s vitality is declining. Warning: death probability is 99.99%.]
[System will now use the world’s energy for recovery.]
With bewilderment, Jonah’s consciousness faded.
“Hello, Jonah.”
“I know you’re asleep, but I’m sure you can hear my message. You might not recognize my voice, it has been many years now. When you wake up, you’ll wonder what happened. To cut the long story short, you died. Well, in my world at least.
“On Feb 8, 2018, you fell off a building and died. No one ever knew how you died. Some people thought you killed yourself, others thought you tripped. Well, in any case, you died. However, I never forgot about you. That’s why I made this system to avoid your death.
“And for one other reason, a disaster is coming. I won’t reveal what it is, because that would change the future too drastically. However, the disaster is inevitable.
“Your world will take a different timeline from now on. Things won’t be the same. I’ll probably not even notice. Thankfully, the system is something outside the rules of time and space. It’s on the spiritual level. So even if I never made the system in your timeline, you’ll still have it.
“Why you? Well, the world needs a hero. Before the disaster befalls, I need you to get stronger. I know you can do it. Just like how you were my hero, I know you’ll be everyone’s hero. Goodbye Jonah, take care of the younger me.”
Jonah opened his eyes after the man’s voice faded.
