The Hero System - Chapter 11
Jonah also felt that his stats are harder to raise as they went up. The first time he cultivated raised his stats more than this.
For some reason, the system stopped giving heroic quests. Jonah asked it and it turned out that he needs to train first. The system couldn’t give quest if Jonah was too weak to handle them. At least, Jonah must have a success rate of 50% and higher.
First quests were to set him on track. Now, the quests will be according to where he goes. And since Cosan was a relatively safe city, Jonah didn’t have much heroic stuff to do.
However, according to Ren’s explanations, Jonah had a theory. Since Spirit Cultivators hunts monsters to protect Earth, there’s a high possibility that he can get experience points by killing monsters.
Even though Jonah disliked killing in general, he was going to hunt unintelligent ones that might harm innocent people in the future.
Jonah also had another reason, he needs money. With his mother getting old, he needs to gain money to make her rest from now on. He also needs money to get into a good college.
This was the basic and most justified reason to kill those monster, survival. For him to live in a better way, he needs to kill those monster. For him to protect others, he needs to kill those monsters. For him to get stronger, he probably needs to kill those monsters.
Of course, Jonah wouldn’t kill non-predators monsters. He wouldn’t want to kill a harmless life just to get a better life. That kind of life wouldn’t be satisfactory.
Jonah felt that he needs to summaries his strength. Everything happened so suddenly the past few days that he was confused. Since he still has time before meeting the others, he grabbed a notebook and began to write how to get stronger and the system functions.
Level Up: Increase stats through Upgrade points. Upgrade Points can be gained through Quests and Level Up. With this, he can upgrade any aspect he wants.
Cultivate: Increase Stats slowly but he can’t select an aspect to specifically upgrade. However, he can cultivate whenever he had time.
System has:
Status Menu.
Skills and Techniques Menu.
Quest Menu.
Hero Menu: Challenges.
Inventory.
Through the Status Menu, he can keep track on his strength and cultivation. He can also increase his stats. Other people seem to pick up techniques that increase certain stats, but not all. However, he can increase all through cultivation and increase specific ones through Upgrade Points.
The skills and technique are quite useful. The system gives him skills and technique. There are several ways to gain a skill or technique.
First, he can gain them through quests’ rewards.
Second, he triggers it through certain actions, just like he did with Evade.
Third, he practices until he gets the essence of it and the system will pick it up, and familiarize it with him.
He knew that not all people can pick up skills this fast normally. When he created the technique and the system picked it up, he felt like he was practicing it for several months when he tried it again.
Next, comes how he levels them. Techniques stage’s increase by practice. However, skills are different.
Skills either have physical conditions or mental ones. The physical ones mean that his body needs to improve to a certain limit for it to level up. Like Evade and Spiritual Sense. However, he knew that these skills tend to be quite basic, and doesn’t require practice. These skills only required ability.
The other way was to practice. Like Spear Arts, he needs to get more familiar with the spear and practice every day to raise his proficiency in it. These skills require his familiarization with them and not the ability. He can be super weak but still raise his Spear Arts.
Next, comes their rank. He still hasn’t figured out what sort of requirement he needs to meet to get high ranked skills. All of his skills were Common ranked until now. So he was quite clueless if he can get a higher ranked skill by ways other than quests.
The Quest Menu. The quests were already divided into three ranks until now. They were Ultimate, Main, and Side-Quests. He estimated that they’re divided by the time he needs to complete them.
The quests give off different rewards. According to the system, he can get a lot of things, and they’ll increase as he gets stronger. For now, he had obtained skills and items. But he was quite clueless about what to do to trigger the quests.
The quest didn’t trigger every time something happened. If the situation didn’t look so good, the system would send him. He wondered how the system could analyze such things. Maybe it can see the future?
However, he was sure the system was trying to foster him in a hero. Not someone wearing caps and flies around saving people, but someone who likes to help people and has the necessary strength to do so.
Also, the quest difficulty would depend on his level. For example, when he saved the beggar, it had a Normal difficulty level. That was because he was too weak. But now, it would probably be an Easy level quest.
The Hero Menu was sort of special. It gave out challenges. However, the challenges were similar, helping other or stopping villains. Challenges were different from quests as they didn’t have a time limit, and it didn’t require him to do anything. He can ignore it. However, it was the fastest way to level up.
Leveling up had two different ways. First, the challenges. Second, sufficient experience points. The experience points were vaguer He can either gain them through challenges or do heroic acts, like saving others.
Experience points were more like mental progress, unlike upgrade points. He gains them every time he does a heroic act or saves someone. With this, his mentality will also change to become hero-like. And once he reaches a certain limit, he’ll be given Upgrade Points to gain more strength.
The inventory required him to be a level 10. He can only wait for other functions to activate.
And he didn’t know anything about the other cultivation stages except their names, so this was about it.
Jonah packed his clothes and said goodbye to his mother before walking out. He headed toward school where he’ll meet Ren and Leo. He also took his mask just in case he needs it in Terra.
“Well, Ren isn’t here yet,” Leo said as he stood beside Jonah in front of the school gates.
Five minutes later, a black BMW stopped in front of them. The window rolled down revealing Ren in casual clothing. If not for the expensive car, the two would have thought she was just an ordinary girl.
The two got inside and sat down. The car was spacious and was more than enough.
“Where are we going?” Jonah asked.
“You’ll see.” Ren smiled.
After an hour, the car finally stopped. When Jonah and Leo saw the scenery in front of them, they were dumbfounded even after Ren left them and walked ahead.
The two expected many things. Like half a sphere building with jets flying in and out, a flying city, or even a huge gate that leads to Terra. However, they didn’t expect the place to be simply a forest with mountain ranges.
The car parked on an isolated road near the forest. Ren was up ahead walking through the trees. The two guys looked at each other with confusion and decided to follow along.
After ten minutes of walking, they finally reached a cave. The cave’s floor was quite smooth and it was obviously modified by humans. The two followed Ren till the cave got smaller and smaller, reaching an iron door.
The strange thing is that even after walking to the deep parts of the cave, they can still see perfectly. However, there were no light bulbs or touches. There were just a couple of shiny stones.
The iron door had an electronic look but no number plate or a fingerprint scanner. It just had a hole. When they stood in front of the lock, light shone through the hole presenting a hologram panel.
The two were astonished. The hologram technology was well-developed, but only rich people used it.
The panel had Ren’s picture and a profile. Then, a woman’s voice sounded out.
“Welcome, Miss Ren. Please enjoy your stay in Terra.”
“Two other life forms detected. Would you like to invite new members?”
“Yes,” Ren said.
“Very well. Please note that you’re responsible for any violations or crimes they do. Please come in.” The voice said and two beams of light scanned Jonah’s and Leo’s bodies. Then the door opened revealing an elevator.
Jonah and Leo were now 90% convinced that Terra was the real thing. Because, who would implant such high technology as a prank? With these thoughts, their heart started racing.
Since the two bros are going to Terra in the next few chapters, I made a summery to point out some things. I know you hate info dumps, but I needed to explain somethings before moving on. Keep the power stones coming if you like this! Review if there’s something you think can be done in a better way!
