The Hero System - Chapter 2
Jonah could see a white ceiling. He tried to get up but he felt like he was paralyzed. However, he still managed to sit while ignoring the stinging sensation.
“Excuse me,” Jonah said to the nurse that was cleaning the room but his voice was hoarse. It felt like he hasn’t drunk water in a long time. But he wasn’t thirsty, just a dry mouth.
“Hm? You” The nurse who Jonah addressed turned around. When she saw Jonah awake, surprise flashed on her face.
“Wait for a moment, please! The doctor will be here in a moment!” The nurse said hurriedly before rushing out. Jonah was confused. What was happening?
“I was doing the laundry when a man showed up He then What did he do?” Jonah mumbled. However, he didn’t understand how he was sent flying in midair.
When Jonah remembered the feeling of falling and hitting the pavement he couldn’t help but tremble. He never wanted to feel that powerless again.
“Wait before I lost consciousness, something sounded out. It said ‘System’?”
[Correct.]
“W-who’s there?” Jonah panicked when he heard a voice in his head. It wasn’t a good feeling.
[Greetings, user Jonah. This is The Hero System. My creator should have explained everything in his message.]
Jonah was dumbstruck. He vaguely remembers an old man’s voice talking to him before he woke up But he thought it was someone talking beside him.
“You mean the message was real?” Jonah asked after taking a deep breath.
[Correct.]
“You think I’d buy that? You think I’m that stupid? Is this a scam? Prank? Show yourself!” Jonah shouted while frantically looking around. He wanted to find a speaker or a camera. He shook his ears to check if they had a tiny speaker in them.
Before Jonah could hear the answer of the voice in his head, a middle-aged doctor came in.
“Good morning, Mr. Jonah Regon.” The doctor smiled and walked over with a medical file. Jonah could see his surprise when he saw him. Jonah nodded.
“Do you remember what happened?” The doctor asked.
“I I tripped and fell from the building.” Jonah couldn’t tell him that a young man sent him flying, because he didn’t believe it either.
“Mm. I see. Well, what happened could only be said to be a miracle. Somehow, your body didn’t have any damage except some minor injuries. However, you had brain concussion. That’s why you’ve been in a coma for a week. It’s a miracle that you didn’t lose your life.” The doctor said trying to console him.
Jonah took a deep breath and nodded. He also knew this. Falling from a six-story building and ending with only minor injuries? Impossible. Jonah felt like this wasn’t a miracle. But the thing in his head helped him.
“What about my mother?”
“We have already called her. She’ll be here in a while. You can rest.” The doctor said and then left.
Jonah looked out of the window, the sky had a shade of orange and light purple. He looked at the clock and fount it was 06:09 PM.
“Are you here?” Jonah asked, looking around.
[Host can communicate with his thoughts.]
‘With my thoughts? So they can hear me thinking?’ Jonah felt doubtful.
[Correct.]
‘Holy shit!’
Jonah began to believe this thing called The Hero System. His recovery, the message, and now telepathy. Even though logic refused such absurd things, but he couldn’t help but believe in this.
‘Can you tell me who your creator is?’
[Access denied.] The System said.
‘Can you tell me what’s going to happen to earth?’
[Access denied.] The System said.
‘Then what can you do?!’ Jonah asked impatiently.
[System has five functions. Would you like to open the management panel?] The System said.
‘Open.’
When Jonah instructed, a panel appeared before his eyes. He was dumbstruck. The panel floated midair. He tried to hold it but his hands went through. He tried to touch it but his hands also went through.
[Host has to control the panel with his thoughts.] The System said.
Jonah looked at the panel. It had a huge ‘The Hero System’ background with five bottoms on the top left. The five bottoms were Status Menu, Quests Menu, Skills Menu, Hero Menu, and Inventory.
Jonah focused on the Status Menu and instantly, a second panel appeared. It had the words ‘Status Menu’ on top of it. Followed by it were different rows.
[Name: Jonah Regon.]
[Age: 16]
[Level: 1]
[Experience points: 0/10]
[Upgrade Points: 0]
[Vitality: 11]
[Stamina: 10]
[Strength: 7]
[Agility: 9]
[Resistance: 4]
[Intelligence: 12]
[Charm: 9]
[Spirit: 15]
Jonah was dumbstruck. Didn’t this look like one of the games he played in internet cafes? He understood most of them. However, he didn’t understand Spirit.
[Spirit is your mental health and resistance. It can help you against mental attacks and illusions. More uses require a higher level.] The System said.
‘Mental attacks? It’s probably against hypnosis right?’ Jonah thought to himself.
Still, Jonah was pissed. Strength, resistance, and charm were the lowest. When your weaknesses are turned into numbers, that somehow hurts.
‘System, how can I increase my stats?’ Jonah asked.
[Upgrade Points increase your stats.] The System said.
Jonah glanced at the Upgrade Points row. So if he wants to increase his stats, he needs to get these points?
‘How do I get these points?’
[By leveling up, completing Quests, and completing Challenges. You can obtain Upgrade Points from all of these. However, Leveling up gives the most points.] The System said.
Jonah understood. He then shifted his gaze from the Status Menu to the Quest Menu. Then, a panel popped up. There were three rows in this with a single line each.
[Ultimate Quest: Save The World. Reward: Access Denied. Due: Access Denied. Difficulty: Hell.]
[Main Quest: Reach Level 99 Before The Disaster. Reward: Legendary Level Skill. Legendary Level Item. Due: June 21, 2023. Difficulty: Extreme]
[Side Quest: Perfect Score in All Subjects in Mid-Term Exams. Reward: One Common Skill. Due: First Day of Spring Break. Difficulty: Normal]
‘Save the world? So it means I need to get past the disaster? Well, that makes sense. However, the main quest is due on is this when the disaster is happening?’ Jonah drew a deep breath when he saw this.
‘The side quest is getting perfect score Does the system mock me for having only average score?!’ Jonah’s mouth twitched.
[System gives new Quests based on the situation. You can complete Easy Level Quests first. Or you can try to complete the Challenges.] The System said.
Jonah understood now. It seems he can trigger quests to pop up. He then shifted his gaze to the Skills Menu. It was empty. Jonah regretted being an average guy with barely any hobbies.
He then opened the Hero Menu. He was quite excited about it since he didn’t know what it was. It had four rows.
[Challenge: Help One Person. Reward: Experience Point.]
[Challenge: Save One Person. Reward: Level Up.]
[Challenge: Capture One Villain. Reward: Experience Point.]
[Challenge: Kill One Villain. Reward: Level Up.]
Jonah’s face darkened when he read the last challenge.
‘System, isn’t killing someone is too extreme?’
[Creator knew you’d ask about this. He said that you will face difficult choices in the future.] The System said.
When Jonah heard this, he felt the pressure of becoming a hero. A hero isn’t someone who only saves Sometimes, for the greater good, he has to kill someone. Jonah decided to try to avoid being in this kind of situations if possible. He doesn’t want to kill people.
‘System, are these challenges fixed?’
[No. They change when you complete them.] The System said.
Jonah shifted his gaze to the last button. A notification popped up.
[Level 10 required.]
‘System, what is this?’
[It’s a spatial function. The user can put his items in a separated space.] The System said.
Jonah was stunned. This was heaven-defying! However, the system’s existence itself is heaven-defying. Just what kind of person made this?
Now that Jonah thought about it the old man who made the system seems to be someone who knows him. The only clue is that Jonah has helped him before But, Jonah helped a lot of people! Especially those who get bullied.
It’s not like he wears a cape and goes around saving people. But he couldn’t just turn a blind eye to people in need.
“Jonah!” The door opened while Jonah was still thinking. His mother was here.
