The Hero System - Chapter 23
When the figure took off its hood, Jonah’s heart shook. He has never seen such a ‘being’ in his life. Even with all the fantasy novels in his real life, he still didn’t recognize what species this was.
The being had a head just like a normal intelligent being but looked like a burned corpse with his black fragmented skin. It had a short black messy hair. Its eyes were closed and deformed like they were burned, however, it had a third eye on its forehead that was vertically placed. The eye gave Jonah a feeling of unease and fear with its nonstop twitching and the movements of the pupil.
However, Jonah frowned at one thing, its ears. It had long ears just like the elves. He didn’t know if it was just a coincidence or not. But it would be bad if this was an elf previously. That means that this elf transformed.
“What? What? What? Shocked? Scared? Terrified? Hahahaha” The one-eyed being’s face twisted with glee as it laughed but it was uglier than weeping.
“Who are you? What do you want?” Lia asked. She was also shocked to the core with this being appearance. Even though she saw many races, this being wasn’t one of them.
“I want I want what do I want? I don’t know Oh! Oh! Oh! His life!” The one-eyed being laughed as he pointed at Jonah, then a black mist emerged from his sleeves.
The black mist descended on the ground and kept spreading. Jonah backed away thinking it was poison, but he was wrong.
Black misty beings rose up from the mist. He didn’t know how this one-eyed being did it but he had no time to think. Because as soon as the misty creatures appeared, they launched themselves toward Jonah.
The creatures were human-like shaped but they had no features or an actual body. They were formed from the black mist. They started madly attacking Jonah and Lia as soon as they completed their manifestation.
Holding mist swords, they started to madly slash at Jonah. Jonah tried to black one of the attacks but it was quite heavy. If he kept getting hit by these attacks, he’d soon be fully exhausted.
Lia didn’t struggle like Jonah and kept attacking effortlessly. She’d occasionally help Jonah out. However, the more she killed, the more they appeared.
“Hehehehe I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!” The one-eyed being started to laugh and shout.
“Dammit” Jonah used his spear to slash down another misty being but it regenerated. If this goes on, both of them would be in danger.
“Rise! Rise! Rise!” The one-eyed being started to yell as he raised his hands upward.
Jonah felt something wrong so he looked toward the center of the mist. To his horror, a gigantic being was slowly being formed. Jonah didn’t know what it is but had a bad feeling about it. If he allowed this being to complete its manifestation, both of them would be dead.
With this thought, Jonah braced himself. Even though he was scared, he wouldn’t let his fear kill him. He used needles to pierce the surrounding misty creatures and dashed toward the insane being using Spider Steps.
Jonah reached the being before it can react and thrust with all of his strength. The spear pierced through its chest and went deep.
“You You” The being had a shocked expression as it looked toward Jonah. It looked down to the spear and reached his trembling, pale-looking hands.
“Just kidding! Hahahaha!” The being raised his head and laughed at Jonah. At the same time, black mist spears launched themselves from the wound that Jonah made.
“Shit!” Jonah withdrew his spear and dodged, but he was too late.
“AHHH!” Jonah screamed with pain when a black spear penetrated his abdomen. Luckily, it was the only one. If he was hit by another spear, he would have died.

‘What should I do what should I fucking do!!!’ Jonah thought as he gritted his teeth and stood up.
“Hahahaha! Master will be glad! Master will be glad! I’ll kill him! I’ll kill the hero!” The one-eyed being laughed more and more.
Jonah frowned when he heard the word ‘hero’. No one referred to him like that before. The only connection he has with heroism is the system. However, they couldn’t have known he was the one with the system, right?
Since the beginning, this one-eyed being kept saying stuff like he expected it. Can this master of his predict his appearance? However, why would he? He knew nothing about this master. Was it possible that there’s something that he doesn’t know but this master does?
Guuuaaaa
Jonah heard an eerie deep pitched cry. He turned around while clutching his stomach that was oozing with blood and black substance.
He saw that the bigger being has finished manifestation. It was like the rest but fatter and taller. If Jonah had to describe it, it would be similar to a golem made of mist. However, unlike the earlier misty beings, it had two purple lights in his eyes that resembled light.
“Kill him! Kill him!” The one-eyed being started to shout and point at Jonah.
The golem froze and turned toward Jonah inspecting him. Then, it sprinted!
‘Dammit! Should you be slow?!’ Jonah’s face twisted.
“Die!” Before the golem reached Jonah, Lia already obstructed him. Wind surrounded her sword as she slashed. A wind blade formed and traveled toward the golem.
However, the golem seemed to be unconcerned as it punched toward the wind blade. Then, the wind blade simply disintegrated. Lia paled when she saw this.
She gashed her teeth and wind surrounded her and the blade. Then, she launched herself toward the golem to fight it in close combat.
Lia slashed with her sword and the golem raised its hands to block. However, Lia disappeared from her place and reappeared behind the golem. She then slashed toward its back and the sword made a deep cut in it.
GYAAAAAAA
The golem cried and thrust its arm and turned around. Lia was caught off guard and she tried to block with the sword and the wind, but she was sent flying.
PAANGG
Lia slammed into a tree and the tree broke in half. She started to cough several mouthfuls of blood.
“Dammit!” Jonah tightened his fist with anguish. He took out the Talisman to use it hoping to change the situation. This was his only chance and if he messed it up, both of them would die.
Guaaaaaaaa
Jonah raised his head to see the golem’s hand coming his way. This way, even if he disappeared, he’d be dead!
Jonah couldn’t dodge the punch. He clenched his teeth and raised his spear to block. His needles attacked the golem repeatedly but it was futile.
PAAAAAAANGGG
When the punch landed on the spear, Jonah felt his arms being crushed. Then, he was sent flying like Lia and crashed into the stairs.
“Fucker” Jonah coughed several mouthfuls of blood. Blood obstructed his vision as he looked toward the rushing golem.
He felt despair. He didn’t know what to do. His attacks and skills were useless. And even if he used the Talisman now, it would be useless with his current body status. And if he tried to run, Lia would die.
Jonah mind was filled with ways to survive. However, his mind went blank when he felt a comfortable breeze on his back. He turned around and saw green lights dancing in the ancient shrine. It was as if the lights were telling him to come over.
With no other choice, Jonah turned around and started to walk toward the shrine. His body was a mess and he can barely walk. Every step he made hurt like hell and left a blood trail behind.
“Hahahaha! Running away?! I don’t think so! Kill him!” The one-eyed being started laughing again and ordered. All of the misty creatures and the golem sprinted toward Jonah.
Without looking back, Jonah knew they were after him. He decided to endure the hellish pain and run!
Jonah’s whole body screamed with pain. He could feel sweat cover his back as he ran. Not because he was running, but he felt the misty creatures’ and the golem’s aura getting closer and closer. He stomped his feet on the step and jumped!
With a sorry state, he rolled on the ground on the shrine. He then looked at the ceiling, but there was none. The blue sky was the only thing filling his sight.
