The Hero System - Chapter 29
“Yes! Finally!” Jonah was ecstatic. He sat on the sofa in the living room and opened his Status Menu.

[Strength: 43]
[Agility: 45]
[Resistance: 37]
[Intelligence: 36]
[Charm: 22]
[Spirit: 62]
These were his stats now. He cultivated after the feast was over so it was raised by quite a bit. However, Jonah couldn’t understand what Heroism Points were.
‘System, what are the changes?’
[The Hero Menu has been updated.]
‘So this change isn’t like the previous one However, what changes did The Hero Menu have?’ Jonah was confused since The Hero Menu wasn’t that special, to begin with. It was about saving others and killing villains, that’s all. However, can there be new challenges?
When Jonah opened the hero menu, he was stunned. The menu had a side-list that contained two buttons.
[Challenges.]
[The Hero’s Hall.]
‘The Hero’s Hall?’ Jonah furrowed his brows as he ‘clicked’ the button by focusing on it.
[Name: Jonah Regon.]
[Hero Rank: Novice.]
[Heroism Points: 6.]
‘Hello, Jonah. It has been a while.’ Jonah was checking the window with confusion when he heard the familiar voice.
“Hmm? Who’s there?” Jonah looked around.
‘I know you’re wondering why I sent you a second message, well no suspense, because the system finally acknowledged you.’
Only then did Jonah realize that the voice was in his head. Furthermore, this was the old man! The one who created the system!
‘To upgrade the system for the first time, there are two requirements that I’ve set. Both of them must be fulfilled or you won’t ever come across this function. The first requirement was that you meet them. You probably don’t know who they are, but at least you’ve realized that they know you. This much is something I have predicted to happen.’
Jonah sat down quietly listening to the old man’s words. When he heard him mention ‘them’, he was confused. However, he realized that he meant the one-eyed being. After all, the system only upgraded itself after he met him.
‘These people would do anything to kill you. You’re a threat to them In any case, you need to be cautious against them. Not only your life is on the line, but also the world’s fate. For the second requirement, you need to get the system to acknowledge you as a hero. I’ve set specific ranks and each rank you get will grant you a new function. The rank isn’t about your strength, but your mentality. I won’t be saying anything else since that would just ruin the sincerity of your feelings. Well, that’s all. Take care.’
The message ended leaving Jonah’s mind in a mess. He didn’t even check the new functions as he was pondering deeply about the message.
First, he realized that he couldn’t recognize the old man. At first, he thought he’d be able to. Truth is, Jonah had his suspicions. The person who was most likely to be the creator was Leo. Even though Jonah had no proof, Leo was the only friend who would save him.
However, doubt planted itself in his heart. Jonah couldn’t recognize the voice one bit. Even though the possibility of him being Leo was still high, it dropped a lot.
For some reason, he also felt a familiarity when he heard the voice. He didn’t know when he met this person but he was sure that he had met him before.
Second, Jonah pondered about ‘them’. Judging by how the old man referred to them, it was certain that they were a group. However, what did they have to do with the system? Why would meeting them be a requirement?
Jonah couldn’t help but think that this group had something to do with the disaster in five years. After all, the system’s purpose was to avoid the disaster’s aftermath. Jonah didn’t know what the disaster was but he was sure that it had something to do with Terra. He did have some theories but all of them didn’t have any solid proof.
Third, the Hero Rank. Jonah remembered that he got the upgrade after the third trial. That means that the system updated itself when Jonah realized that he had some heroic qualities. However, would that be enough to upgrade? If it was, then what about the other ranks? Can there be something else?
Jonah had too little information at hand. Since that was the case, he decided to check the new function for now. However, he was speechless when he saw that there was only one button in the Hero’s Hall.
[Activate Hero-Mode.]
‘Activate Hero-Mode.’
[Hero-Mode activated.]
Then, nothing happened. Jonah felt cheated for getting his hopes up like that and nothing happening. At this point, he wouldn’t mind actually transforming into a magical ‘guy’ or something.
Norlan and Sana happened to walk into the living room at this moment. Jonah looked at the two and the system notified him.
[Target Selected. Confirm?]
Jonah was stunned. ‘Target? What target?’
[Target for soul scanning.]
‘Uh… Confirm?’
“Oh, Jonah? What are you doing here dazing around?” Norlan asked.
However, Jonah didn’t respond. He had a surprised expression and his mouth was slightly opened in shock as he looked at the two.
Jonah felt like he was looking right through their souls! However, he can only see one thing. Their guilty conscience! That wasn’t what shocked Jonah It was that the two of them were having a secret affair!
“Uh something wrong?” Sana’s question snapped Jonah from his shock.
“Nothing! Nothing! I need to rest, bye!” Jonah panicked and ran.
Now that he calmed down, he realized that it wasn’t that weird. After all, they were two healthy youths living under the same roof.
However, what confused Jonah was why they would hide it. After all, it was totally normal. His interest was piqued and he surfed through the Life Network.
After a bit of research, Jonah was finally able to figure out why. It turned out the reason is Sana’s sect, The Holy Tree Sect, prohibited their members from interacting with men! It’s an all maiden sect!
‘Well they sure have it tough. In any case, I need to forget about this.’ Jonah threw the idea to the back of his mind. He walked into his room and check the hero menu again.
[Name: Jonah Regon]
[Hero Rank: Novice.]
[Heroism Points: 4.]
[Hero-Mode: Activated.]
‘Deactivate Hero-Mode.’
Jonah concluded that each person he ‘looks’ into would reduce his points by one. He didn’t know why the system would need to restrain him with points. ‘Maybe the system can’t do it easily?’ Jonah shrugged as there was a lot he didn’t know about the system.
He realized this new function was terrifying. However, he didn’t know if it was fool-proof. After all, some killers wouldn’t have a guilty conscience. So Jonah asked the system.
[The user can retrieve memories from the target when using the Hero-Mode.]
‘Can I specify?’
[Yes, the system can filter the memories.]
‘I see’
With this, Jonah’s heart settled. This way, he wouldn’t hurt people unjustly. At the very least, he’d have a clear conscience.
He then started to ponder the thing that confused him about this function. Why wasn’t it a skill? Even though Jonah could only use it for points, couldn’t the system has just rewarded him with a skill? When Jonah asked the system, it gave out its motto. Access Denied.
There was only one feasible possibility. This function wasn’t the only thing Jonah would be getting. As he ranks higher, there must be other functions. And some of them might be related to this one!
‘System, can the Hero-Mode be upgraded?’
[The Hero-Mode would have more abilities as your Rank go up.]
‘As expected The Hero-Mode has more secrets than I thought.’
Jonah remembered that he didn’t give Leo the technique. He went to his room and handed it over.
When Jonah gave it to Leo, the latter was shell-shocked. He didn’t think his friend would give a cultivation technique that was this valuable. After he saw its price, he almost choked!
“Jonah Where did you get this from?” Leo asked with panic.
Jonah told him the truth this time. Too many lies would just ruin their friendship, and Jonah didn’t want that. Naturally, Jonah was scolded by Leo. However, Leo was still grateful that Jonah not only took care of him but also told him the truth.
“Then what about you? Do you have a copy?”
“I have a different one!” Jonah couldn’t tell him about the system. Not now, at least. He also didn’t lie since that was the truth. Leo thought it must be the king who gave Jonah two techniques.
“Thank you. I won’t forget this”
PA!
“Why are you being polite to me? We’re bros! And bros take care of each other!” Jonah smacked Leo on the head and scolded.
“Hahaha, sorry. Anyway, I have to cultivate!” Leo laughed. However, gratitude filled his heart as he swore to remember this.
Jonah laughed at his friend’s excited expression and went back to his room. He won’t cultivate today but allocate his points! He had 93 Upgrade Points.
‘Oh, btw system, why was the reward 93 points?’
[The user was reward according to the percentage of completing the quest. The maximum reward was 100 Upgrade Points.]
‘I see. Then tell me how to gain Heroism Points.’
[Same as Upgrade Points, you can gain them by leveling up and quests.]
Jonah nodded and started allocating his points
Hmmm… Vote or not? Should definitely vote!
