The Hero System - Chapter 3
Jonah lied on his bed once he reached home. His mother was already asleep on the other bed in the room. He gazed at the ceiling while thinking.
When he saw his mother’s panicked and worried face, he felt how much she cared about him. Her eyes were red from crying, her hair was messy, and her face was pale.
‘The old man said that I would have died if not for the system. That means, in a different timeline, my mother stayed all alone. She lost her husband followed by her only son.’ Jonah felt his heart aching at these thoughts.
If not for The Hero System, Jonah would have already passed away. It literally saved his life. Jonah felt infinite gratitude for the creator. With these thoughts, he resolved to fulfill his destiny.
[Ding! Spirit increased by 1 point.] The System said.
Jonah’s line of thoughts broke with this notification. He still found it weird to have something so a game like in his brain. Well, not in his brain, rather his soul.
‘System, when can I get more quests?’
[Quest will be included according to the events around the host. These triggering events will be within a 5km radius of the host.]
‘Holy 5km radius?’ Jonah didn’t quite understand how this thing works. He felt like these things can only be done by a higher being, like gods.
Jonah looked at his mother, she was still asleep. He stood up, wore his jacket and shoes, and walked out. Since he was in a coma for over a week, he didn’t feel sleepy.
He walked through the streets, reaching the park. His goal was simple a new quest. Since he resolved to fulfill his mission, he will give it his all.
Another reason for this was because he was scared. He was scared that he’d meet another crazy person that would kill him out of the blue. He needs to become stronger.
When Jonah remembered the young man Fury aroused in his heart. That young man took his life for no reason and must have killed many others before him.
He didn’t understand how the young man sent him flying, but he knew it was him. He still remembers the strange aura coming from his hand.
[Ding! New Quest.]
Jonah was ecstatic. His goal was accomplished! He hurriedly opened the Quests Menu to see the quest.
‘What is it? Save a cat? Help a granny? Rescue a beauty?’ Jonah was filled with expectations.
[Side-Quest: Flood Rivercrow School With Water. Reward: One Common Item. Due: Next Morning. Difficulty: Easy]
‘What the fuck? Is this system trying to make me into a hooligan? Forget it I should go back to sleep.’
[The Hero System is designed to make you into a hero.] The System seriously said.
Jonah was in a dilemma now. Why did the system say this? Now that he thought about it, he couldn’t help but have some thoughts. Maybe this will lead to something good? Or avoid something bad?
Jonah decided to do it. It’s not like anyone will get hurt. Rather, most students would be happy. Jonah started walking toward the school.
Ten minutes later, he was in front of the school gate. Jonah didn’t do such things before, so he didn’t know how to do it. He was about to climb the wall when he heard footsteps on the other side.
‘It’s probably a guard I should find another place to enter Oh, I can use that!’ Jonah realized something and ran toward another side of the school.
There was a huge tree beside the wall, its thick branches overshadowed the school grounds. Jonah remembers seeing some hooligans skipping school and they used this tree. He started to climb the tree with much difficulty.
“Holy shit. I’m so fucking weak! No wonder my strength is only 7”
Ten minutes later, Jonah was finally able to reach the thick branch. He started to carefully walk on the branch. He then jumped and he landed on the wall. He looked around and saw the three large trash cans that were not so far.
Jonah successfully broke into the school. He rested for a bit and headed toward the school building. Luckily, he avoided the guard on his way in.
Jonah headed to the only place where the huge water pipes are showing, the storage room behind the labs. He once hid in this room with Leo after being chased by the three bullies.
The room’s lock was broken, so he entered without any difficulty. He can see a red water pipe near the wall.
‘Okay, here’s the problem, how do I flood the school? Open a faucet? That won’t do shit!’ Jonah pondered as he looked around.
‘An ax? I shouldn’t Well, I’m already here, so fuck it!’ Jonah glanced at the emergency box that had an ax inside. He took off his jacket and wrapped around his arms. He gnashed his teeth and punched.
Weee Weee Weee Weee
‘FUCK! AN ALARM?!’ Jonah was frightened out by the sudden sound. He didn’t expect the box to have an emergency alarm installed.
He quickly took the ax and held it with both hands. He raised it high and slashed toward the pipe.
PANG!
The pipe started to leak but it was not enough. Jonah struck again.
“WHO’S THERE?!” A shout came from outside the room. It was the guard who heard the alarm.
PANG! This time, the pipe broke and water started flooding out. Jonah threw the ax and dashed out of the room.
Jonah locked toward the end of the hallway and he can see the guard holding a flashlight while rushing over.
“Stop!”
‘SHIT!’ Jonah turned around and fled through the other side. The guard started chasing him. Jonah rushed toward the entrance. He pushed it but it was locked. He looked behind and saw the guard already halfway there.
Jonah looked around frantically and saw a window. The window was also locked. Jonah raised his leg and kicked toward the glass. The glass broke but some sharp pieces were still intact.
“STOP RIGHT THERE!” The guard shouted. He really regretted not doing much exercise.
KICK! KICK! KICK!
Another three kicks and the window didn’t have any glass. Jonah looked around and there were only three meters separating him from the guard. Thankfully, he had his hood covering his face so the guard wouldn’t remember his face.
Jonah took a step back. The guard reached his hand. There was only 30 cm between his hand and Jonah’s back.
However, Jonah jumped through the window like he was diving. The guard grasped empty air and Jonah was out.
“Don’t dare run you fucking punk!” The guard shouted and took out his keys to open the door. He couldn’t fit through the small window.
‘Would I listen to you?’ Jonah didn’t look back and ran toward the large trash cans. He climbed them and jumped over the wall. He didn’t have time to climb down the tree because the guard was already chasing him.
Jonah jumped from the wall and rolled over the ground. He felt pain in his legs but didn’t dare to delay. He ran into the distance. Soon, he reached the Old District.
[Ding. Quest completed. One item was obtained. Does host want to receive it?]
When he reached home, Jonah heard the system notifying him. He didn’t want to receive the reward near his mother so he went into the bathroom.
‘Receive it.’ Jonah commanded.
The air around him started trembling. Then a white sphere appeared in front of him. Jonah backed away. He didn’t know what was about to happen.
The white sphere began to suck air from the surrounding. A few moments later, the white sphere turned into a white object. It then floated to Jonah and he grabbed it.
[Ding. Item obtained: The Hero’s Mask.]
[The Hero’s Mask: Every hero needs a mask. To strike terror in the hearts of the villains and calm the citizens. Effect: Increases the allies’ and citizens’ trust toward the host. Increases enemies’ fear. Makes the host unidentifiable.]
‘Damn, is the system preparing me for my first hero debut?’ Jonah was excited.
‘I don’t see how I’ll need it though Maybe it’s random item selection?’ Jonah frowned. For now, he wanted something to help him with his side quest. The white mask had black lines on it. Only the eyes could be shown.
“So fucking cool! I could use it if I had to do quests like earlier. But still, should I scare the exam papers with this?”
Jonah decided to not think about it and sleep for now. He didn’t have school for three days and the exams were in a week. He can think about something later.
The next morning.
“Now to our program’s special segment, Local Flash News!”
Jonah woke up and heard the radio. They didn’t have a TV in their apartment. Jonah stood up and stretched his body. It was an exhausting night.
“Rivercrow School, in District 3, was flooded by a hooligan last night! The guard says it was a youth about 1.7m tall. However, he wore a hood and the guard didn’t see his face.”
Jonah’s mouth twitched. Was this his beginning as a hooligan? Maybe it should be called The Hooligan System!
“However, it appeared to be a fortune in disguise! While the workers were fixing the pipe this morning, they found a gas leak in the school’s labs! Thankfully, they were able to fix it before something tragic happened!” The radio host continued.
Jonah froze when he heard this. ‘Holy fuck! Was this what the system wanted? Wait Can it predict the future?’ Jonah wondered.
[Ding. Challenge completed. You leveled up.]
