The Hero System - Chapter 32
“Okay. After you enter this gate, you’ll be transferred to another place. From there, you’ll have to accomplish the mission given to you in 12 hours. The place you go to will not be the same. Each person will be transferred to a different place. You’ll also be transformed near a Supply Station in case you need anything. Your mission is simple. Kill monsters! The top third of you will be accepted. For the others, they need to try again next month. We have 423 people. That means only 141 people will pass. Any questions?”
The young woman finished her explanation and turned to look at the Spirit Trainees. They have walked behind her for ten minutes before reaching another hall. But this hall was different from the earlier one, as it had a portal.
Unlike the portals between worlds, this one looked plain. Well, the truth is, it didn’t ‘look’ anything at all. There was only a gate frame with nothing behind.
“Uh I have one! On what the ranking would be based?”
“The credit points you gain. However, you don’t need to sell them every time. Your bracelets would monitor the area while you fight. If you kill the monster, the credit will be added to your bracelet. Later, the staff would pick them up.”
“Can we form teams?” Jonah was the one who asked this time. He wanted to help Leo, at the very least.
“You can, the points will be divided as 75% for the one who did it, and 25% for the one who helped. If you team up with more than just one, the 25% will be disturbed among them. Everything will be monitored so need to try cheating. Clear?”
This time, everyone nodded. The rules were obvious. You hunt, you win. Thankfully, it wasn’t that difficult. However, only a third can pass. Competition aroused in everyone’s heart.
“Okay, go.” The young woman said and the air froze for a second. Then, everyone sprinted! They wanted to have a head start from the rest! When the first passed through the gate frame, he disappeared!
However, only a group of people didn’t rush to go in. There were 20 people. Jonah, Leo, and the two youths were of the group. When the young woman saw this, she nodded in approval. After all, her explanation was clear. Everyone will be given 12 hours to finish. There was no need to rush, to begin with.
After Jonah passed through the gate, the scenery changed in front of him. It was replaced by a gigantic forest that spread wide and far. In the distance, he can see a mountain with the morning sun behind it.
“Leo, this is awesome!” Jonah said. However, he didn’t receive a reply.
When Jonah turned around, he only saw a young girl. No one else was here, not even Leo. He was sure that Leo came with him, so he was confused. Then he remembered the young woman words. They were going to be separated randomly.
“My name isn’t Leo.” The girl had a confused expression. She was rather short with a long brown hair that tied as a bun. She had green eyes and long eyelashes. The girl was wearing blue jeans with a simple white t-shirt.
“Uh, haha. I thought my friend also came here.” Jonah laughed embarrassedly and said. The girl nodded and walked away.
When Jonah looked around, he realized they were at the top of a tower. He followed the girl downstairs. In the ground floor of the tower, there was a weaponry shop. Jonah bought a couple of stuff, including five needles, from there and supplied himself with food from the near grocery store.
After everything was checked, Jonah headed toward the reception hall where everyone waited. Some of them were embarrassed that they rushed in earlier thinking they’d get a head start. They all gazed with anticipating eyes toward the door with the clock above it. The countdown had 5 more minutes to go.
Unlike the rest, Jonah strolled around and found a seat. After he got seated, the system’s notification popped up.
[Ding! New Side-Quest: Rank first in E-2 Assessment! Reward: One rare item! Due: 12 hours and 3 minutes. Difficulty: Medium.]
‘First?’ Jonah frowned. After all, he was just a Third Level Condensing Stage. There were surely others who were above him, like the youth from earlier. After pondering about it for a bit. Jonah finally concluded why the system made it sound so easy. His Telekinesis! While controlling 10 needles, he’ll be able to gather a lot of credit points!
BEEEEEEEEEEEEP
An alarm sounded from the gate snapping Jonah out of his thinking. He turned around and saw the others madly dashing out. He stood up and walked out as well.
After he was out, Jonah was surrounded by a forest. With no further delay, Jonah sprinted using Spider Steps and his map. He ran deep into the forest while avoiding others who were also fighting. They were marked with a yellow dot and the monsters with red dots.
After running for a while, Jonah stopped. He turned around and spoke to the tree not far away from him. “You think I don’t know you’re there?” Jonah’s voice resounded through the forest. There was a brief silence before the bushes started to rustle.
Jonah was stunned when he saw it was the girl from earlier. However, he had his guard up since it seemed like she had a goal in mind.
“How did you know I was following you?” The girl asked with surprise.
“I’m the one asking the questions. What do you intend to do?” Jonah held his spear as he asked.
“Wait! I just want to team up with you!” The girl said while raising her hands.
Jonah frowned. Team up with her? How can she be so trusting to do that? He couldn’t help but feel suspicious.
“Why me?”
“Because you’re more capable from the rest. I saw your fight and how composed you’re, so I decided it would be beneficial to team up, for the both of us.” The girl said with calm.
Jonah went silent again. However, he nodded after a short pause. He wanted to use his Hero-Mode to check this girl, but he realized how overcautious he was being. After all, the girl had nothing to gain from him. They were being monitored so she couldn’t hurt him. Plus, he was going to be the one to get 75% of the points if he killed a monster.
“What’s your name?” The girl asked.
“Jonah.”
“I’m Sira.”
“Okay. Follow me.” Jonah nodded and turned around. He then sprinted again with the girl following behind him.
After ten minutes, Jonah regretted his decision to team up. Not that the girl meant harm, but she asked too many questions!
“Where did you come from? Do you belong to a sect? Are you a commoner? When did you awaken?”
Jonah started ignoring her after the tenth question. After they reached a place far from the rest, Jonah finally stopped.
“Wait for a second,” Jonah told the girl as he dialed Leo’s number. He wanted to find his friend so they can team up.
“Beep.” The call dropped. Jonah frowned and called again, but the same thing happened.
“It seems we can’t use our communication devices here,” Sira said.
Jonah nodded silently. He kept thinking about his friend and couldn’t help but feel worried. After all, he just reached the First Level.
‘System, can you mark Leo with a green dot on the map?’
[Done.]
After the system got upgraded, it had a 6 km radius. Jonah didn’t realize this until he used the map earlier.
“We should start hunting.” Sira was clearly impatient. After all, they wasted 20 minutes already.
“Okay. I have a plan. Follow me.” Jonah smirked and said. Like earlier, he started sprinting again.
