The Hero System - Chapter 37: Quest: Failed!
“What is this?” Jonah furrowed his brows. After all, he didn’t think there would be someone this capable other than him in this assessment.
However, it seemed he thought wrong. Even with his Telekinesis, he couldn’t kill this efficiently. Curious about what this was, he decided to go check it.
Luckily, he was in a cave in a mountain and could see what is happening from afar. However, due to the trees blocking his view, he can only see a huge dark blue shadow moving around.
‘Should I go check it?’ Jonah frowned. He was curious but at the same time, cautious.
However, he decided to check it in the end. After all, this was still an assessment. If his opponent didn’t prepare a spiritual barrier beforehand, he can’t do anything to him.
Making his way through the trees, Jonah finally caught up to the shadow. When he saw what it was, he was flabbergasted. Since the system showed two yellow dots, which are natural, he thought they were two other human Spirit Trainee!
However, this was a wolf! A gigantic, blue, wolf! Jonah would have thought it the system malfunctioned if not for the blonde youth sitting on top of the wolf!
‘Did he tame it? But I didn’t see anyone bringing monsters with them Did he tame it here?’ Jonah wondered.
“Like what you see?” The blonde youth turned toward Jonah and smiled.
Since his cover was busted, Jonah can only walk out to show that he means no harm. “I was just strolling when I saw you. Is this your monster?” Jonah pointed toward the wolf.
“It’s my friend!” The blonde hair patted the wolf’s head and jumped.
To Jonah’s astonishment, the wolf turned into blue lights and disappeared! Jonah was confused as he looked around, but nothing to be seen. He expected a portal or something but there was none.
“You don’t know about Contractors?” The youth had a surprised expression.
“Contractors?” Jonah’s confusion only increased.
“I see.” The youth smiled and nodded. However, he didn’t explain. He lifted his hand and light swirled around before it was shaped as an eagle. The youth hoped into the eagle’s back and the eagle began to fly.
“You should be careful! This time’s first place is mine!” The youth said before the eagle fluttered its wings and flew.
“First place? How did he knew I’m aiming for first?” Jonah was confused.
‘Furthermore, did he just call over another monster? How can he do that?’
Jonah pondered for a second before opening his profile. He didn’t check his bracelet for the ranking before since he just had to hunt. After looking for a while, he found the ranking. Furthermore, he wasn’t first, but second!
“Noah Jonson It’s that guy”
Jonah looked at the first scorer and it was the youth from earlier. He didn’t know his points but he needed to pick up the pace to place first!
Jonah opened his map and looked for any nearby monsters. However, most of them were already killed by Noah! He decided to head to another direction to find more monsters to hunt. Then, he went on a killing spree!
Beep.
“Assessment is over. Please head toward the nearest supply station to head back. The coordinates were sent to your bracelets.”
Jonah panted heavily as he killed the last monster. He was killing for the past hour but he didn’t catch up! He placed second!
[Side-Quest failed. No reward would be given.]
“Sigh It seems I still have a long way to go. There will always be mountains beyond mountains and heavens beyond heavens.” Jonah laughed helplessly.
Even though he failed in his quest, he wasn’t down one bit. After all, this was more exciting! It would be boring if he was the strongest all the time. Furthermore, that was just because he got the system!
“It seemed I relied too much on the system I need to train when I get back.” Jonah checked the coordinates before heading toward the nearest supply station.
However, he didn’t meet anyone he knows. Thus, he just had a bath in one of the supply stations showers and changed his clothes. After all, he was bloodied from head to toe.
“Please head toward the portal.” The receptionist instructed as she gestured toward the stairs. Like the one he came through, this portal was also on top of the tower. After passing through it, Jonah was back at the hall from earlier.
However, he only spotted Ben and Sira. Leo, the two youths, and Noah were nowhere to be seen. Jonah walked over toward the two.
“Where’s Leo?”
“They said that he’d be in the organization’s hospital,” Sira replied.
“I see.”
While the three were talking, others were also talking about them. Jonah noticed some of them pointing fingers and whispering. He was confused before he remembered that they were the top scorers.
The first was Noah. The second was Jonah. The third was someone Jonah didn’t know. The fourth was Sira. And the fifth was Ben.
Even though Sira was only a support, specializing in boosting and healing, she rose because she teamed up with Jonah. Ben scored fifth by his own ability and the part of 25% he gained from Jonah.
“Okay. Quinten down.” The young woman walked in and said. The hall turned silent.
“Everyone knows the rules. Those who placed 142 and below in the ranking should try next month. Those who passed should stay, others should leave.”
Some of those who didn’t pass were depressed. Some were pissed. Minutes later, only those who passed stayed.
“Nice to meet you again, everyone. My name is Elin Rozar. You all have been promoted to the E-2 rank. You’d get a better discount in the Life Shop and The Spirit Organization Shop. Please follow the staff to modify your bracelets and transfer the credit. Those who wish to take the next assessment to rank to E-3 can come to the organization in a month. That’s all.”
Elin turned away and left. Then the staff started modifying their information and bracelets. A new function to create a spiritual barrier was installed. However, they can only use it on Earth.
Jonah learned that Leo has already passed by ranking 48th and his bracelet and information were modified. After biding the others farewell, he headed straight to the hospital. It was already 8 in the evening when the test was over.
“Awake already? How are you?” Jonah walked in and saw that Leo was already awake.
“I’m good now, thank you.” Leo smiled, but his face was still pale.
“Don’t thank me for doing the natural. When are they letting you go?”
“They said I can leave anytime. But I shouldn’t tire my arm the next few days.”
“Okay, then let’s check you out!”
Jonah paid for the hospital fees that was 1000 credit points. It was expensive because they had to call out for a healer to treat Leo’s arm. He then called a Spirit Vehicle and headed home.
“Surprise!”
The two were dumbstruck as they walked in. Because they spent the previous few hours in the wild with their guard’s up, they almost attacked by reflex.
“What’s this?” Jonah looked at the food and drinks on the table. It seems like they’d have a feast.
“Haha, of course, your rank-up celebration! It’s a tradition for a courtyard to celebrate its members rank up.” Gorilla laughed and said.
“Wait, how did you know we passed?” Leo was confused.
“They publish the names of those who passed. Anyway, you guys sure are something! Scoring in the top 50? Especially you, Jonah, scoring second! Damn, didn’t you just start cultivating?” Norlan voiced the question everyone wanted its answer. How did a commoner rise so quickly?
“It’s like that, I used to train with the spear since young and I was just lucky during the assessment.”
“Well, no need to bluff! We won’t force you to confess!” Yan said angrily and started eating.
Jonah was quite helpless. What should he say? Say he got the system? Everyone ignored the topic since Jonah couldn’t provide an answer. Even if he did say the truth, they wouldn’t believe him.
The group had a feast until midnight and everyone then returned to their rooms. Jonah, however, didn’t intend to sleep. After all, he had some upgrade points to spend! However, when he returned to his room, he saw Yan leaning on his room’s door
