The Hero System - Chapter 39
However, he didn’t want to buy them, he wanted to learn how to make them! After all, he has experienced their diverse effects on several occasions!
Even though he wanted to try several other professions, like Spirit Smithing, Soul Pills Forging, and other professions, he still wanted Talismans to be his first occupation.
However, his hands were tight. After all, there were three ways to learn this occupation. First, a Talisman Academy. Second, Self-Studying. Third, becoming a Talisman’s master’s apprentice.
For the first option, Jonah shot it down immediately. After all, he would need to give his full attention to Talisman’s making. The second option was Jonah’s most likely choice. After all, he can raise his intelligence to memorize everything. And for the last option, Jonah was quite hesitated. He’d love to have a master to guide him, but he didn’t know if he can find a good one, if he can find one, to begin with. After all, Jonah had no clue about Talisman’s making.
Thus, for now, he wanted to buy some Talisman’s beginner’s books and materials. And what is a better place to buy this than Cultivators Paradise?
There was a Talisman’s Guild nearby, but Jonah didn’t go there. As far as he knew, he needed to be a member to buy materials from them. Even though the prices were cheaper there, he needed to take an exam to be a member.
Jonah walked into the market’s gate. At the entrance, he had to scan his bracelet to get in. Furthermore, he needs to scan again in one day if he wanted to stay longer. This was probably to prevent any robbery. If a shop gets robbed, they can head straight to the Cultivators Paradise management to report. Afterward, they can see if there were any suspicious people at the entrance. And if there were people who haven’t scanned their bracelets in a day, that means these people fled through other means. Just this complex mechanism would prevent anyone from stealing or robbing.
Jonah was awestruck as he looked at the neat looking building. They had an ancient medieval design that gave them an aura of serenity. There were many vendors on each side of the road bustling with noise as the vendors tried selling their merchandise.
As he strolled around, he read many shop signs and was amazed at what they sold. Some caught his interest as they sold spirit beasts. These were beasts that would have a spirit contract with the owner. After reading through the Life Network, Jonah found that they used a special kind of seal to form the contract. Seals and formations were a part of the Spirit Arts.
As he looked around, Jonah realized that each stroll or shop had a sign. With this, he suddenly thought of something.
‘System, can you use the signs to mark the shops on the map?’
[Done.]
Jonah didn’t know how the system scanned the surrounding. However, he knew that it wasn’t by spiritual energy.
When Jonah opened the map, he saw that each shop had a name written on it. However, his mouth gaped open as he realized that his map could barely show the whole market. It seems that Cultivators Paradise was not to be underestimated.
Jonah closed his map and opened his Life Network to check the status of Cultivators Paradise. After a quick search, he found that this enterprise has established itself in all cultivation-related trades. It stood alongside the information technology enterprise, Life. The former had shops, markets, auction houses, and associations’ branches all over the world. Life, on the other hand, specialized in IT. They had a well-established, secured, network that connected all cultivators together. They also had an online shopping website for cultivators.
It seems that the cultivation world also had certain brands that were famous. For instance, Jonah saw many other brands for Talismans, Weapons, Spirit Technology, and Soul Pills.
Jonah then reopened his map and saw that he was standing right next to a shop called Talismans’ God Hands. Since he didn’t know any good brands for guiding books, he might as well check it out.
However, Jonah regretted his decision. The shop was too shabby and dark. He can barely see anything and what he saw was a mess of materials. Yellow paper, metal plates, brushes, inks, monsters blood, monster’s bones, and dried plants. These things were scattered all over the place.
Pang!
Jonah tripped over some books and a loud noise filled the shop.
“Yes! Yes! Welcome!” A sluggish voice came over from the front desk. Jonah turned around to see a young man sitting at the front desk. His eyes were barely open and he seemed to have just woken up by the noise. Even though the young man had a handsome appearance, it seemed he hadn’t taken care of it as he had an unshaved, messy, beard and dark circles under his eyes. However, Jonah was drawn by the young man’s eyes as they seemed to be filled with vigor and confidence.
“Uh Sorry for waking you up I’m just looking for some materials and guidelines about how to make Talismans.”
The young man yawned and looked at Jonah grumbly. Jonah can feel he was annoyed that someone woke him up.
“Just go and see another shop. All of the things here are outdated.” The young man said and he went back to sleep.
‘Fuck you!’ Jonah was speechless and then angrily left the shop. He didn’t expect such a bad customer service at his first shop.
He then checked the map and saw another shop not far away. It was called Rosy Talismans. Before going in, Jonah looked through the window so that his earlier experience wouldn’t repeat itself. After seeing how neat and organized the shop was, Jonah then walked in happily.
“Welcome, how can I help you?” A beautiful young woman sat behind the counter and greeted.
“Hello I want some beginner guidelines and materials for Talisman’s making.” Jonah was happy that this shop was normal.
“Oh? You want to become a Talismans’ master?” The woman smiled warmly.
“Yes.”
“Okay, you can follow me.”
She then led Jonah to a shelf where there were many books. She then gestured and introduced. “These are all beginner guidelines for people who don’t even know the basics. You can choose the ones who interest you and start with it. None are better than the others. But some focus on a type of talismans and the others focus on another. You can choose anyone to your likings. When you do, I’ll give you a beginner’s kit that matches the book you choose. Take your time.”
The woman left and only Jonah stood in front of the shelf. For some reason, he felt that he’d be reading a lot more than he did in school. After all, every book on the shelf was a gigantic one. Jonah braced himself and decided to check them.
One hour later, Jonah finally skimmed through most of them. He then chose three books that focused on barriers, illusions, and healing. These were the ones he wanted to learn first. After all, the rest were either hard or not that useful to him.
After he chose the books, he paid for them and the woman gave him the kit she mentioned. The kit contained a stack of yellow papers, a brush, and an ink. However, he can’t make a real Talisman with these. He can just learn from this. If he succeeded in drawing the talisman, the paper would glow and that was it. These talismans were only for practice.
Jonah packed his stuff and left the shop. However, he was dumbstruck when met a familiar face outside. It was the face he saw when the protection talisman activated on Isaac’s body!
