The Hero System - Chapter 52
Jonah held the hand-mirror that was the size of a palm in his hand. If it wasn’t for the system’s description, he wouldn’t have imagined that this plain looking bronze mirror would be so useful.
‘Maybe it has some talismans written on it’
Even though he can train with this mirror, he can’t cultivate. Furthermore, unlike a skill, this mirror can be stolen or broken. Hopefully, he’d get such a skill in the future. Nevertheless, this mirror was sufficient for now.
Jonah put the mirror in his suitcase and tried to hide it well. He still didn’t unlock his inventory function which would be the safer place for such important items. However, with Cultivators Paradise guarding the place, he wasn’t worried.
Since Edward wanted to take him somewhere early in the morning, he directly went down after washing his face. As expected, he found Edward waiting for him downstairs.
“I was about to wake you up. Are you ready to go?” Edward stood up from his chair. Jonah nodded and the latter headed out of the shop.
“Where are we going?” Jonah looked around and noticed that some shops have yet to open. Furthermore, they didn’t head to one of the market’s gates.
“Even though you’re a fast learner, that wouldn’t be enough for more complicated talismans. Thus, we need to hone your basic skills!” Edward turned around into a narrow alley that not many people would notice.
Jonah stayed silent and followed along. After walking through several alleys and shortcuts, the two finally stopped in front of an ancient looking building. Even though the building looked old, it had a good structure and seemed to be taken care of.
“This is?” Jonah furrowed his brows. Because of his spiritual sense, he can detect a spiritual barrier around the building, unlike normal building in the market.
“Mr. Ebro! Are you here?” Edward knocked on the door and shouted. After calling for a second time, someone finally responded.
“Yeah! Yeah! What do you want? Why are you here so early?” A bald fat old man opened the door and asked with an annoyed face.
“Mr. Ebro, you told me to come early! This is the disciple that I told you about, Jonah!” Edward slightly bowed and introduced. Jonah also slightly bowed his head and took another glance at Mr. Ebro.
He was a fat old man with a bald head, with some hairs on the sides. His hair was white and he had many wrinkles in his face. His eyes were half closed but they were as sharp as a knife when he looked at him.
“Early means past 9 O’clock! God, why are you in such a rush?!” Mr. Ebro flared up angrily at Edward.
“Please don’t say that I need you to teach him the basic calligraphy skills since I don’t know anything about that!”
Mr. Ebro went silent before turning around and entering the house again. However, he still looked annoyed. Edward nodded toward Jonah and the two entered the house.
Jonah didn’t think he’d be learning how to handwrite. However, since Edward wanted him to train his calligraphy skill, it must be related to his Talisman’s proficiency.
After heading inside, the two walked into a living room where there was a couch they sat on. After waiting for a while, Mr. Ebro came down the stairs wearing a robe like you’d see in museums. It was a dark blue robe with a lighter blue on the sleeves.
“How many days are you leaving him here?” Mr. Ebro sat and folded his arms.
“Only two days!” Edward seemed quite embarrassed as he raised two fingers.
“Two? I don’t mind! But there wouldn’t be any real progress!” Mr. Ebro frowned.
“Don’t worry, he’s a fast learner!” Edward reassured.
Mr. Ebro glanced at Jonah checking him from head-to-toe. If not for his acquaintance with Edward, he wouldn’t even think of teaching someone from scratch. Since it came down to this, he might just give him some pointers and end this whole incident.
“Okay, you can go now!” Mr. Ebro waved his hand and nodded.
“Thank you very much!” Edward bowed and took his leave.
The room went silent and Mr. Ebro and Jonah stared at each other. No one said anything for a few moments like they were judging each other.
“You want to be a talismans master?” Mr. Ebro broke the silence.
“Yes.”
“What for?”
“To make money.”
“Make money” Mr. Ebro’s face sank. He knew that most Talisman masters would start pursuing this profession for such a goal. However, he always disliked these kinds of apprentices as they wouldn’t appreciate the value of the profession they’re learning.
His impression of Jonah was bad since the start. Nevertheless, he’d teach him just to give Edward some face.
Jonah had obviously caught Mr. Ebro’s change of mood. However, that was the truth. He didn’t want to become the number one talismans’ master under the heavens or anything. Just making enough to sell and to use is sufficient for him.
“Follow me.” Mr. Ebro stood up and left the room.
The two reached a small workshop where a lot of scrolls and calligraphy paintings hanged around. Furthermore, there was a small study desk with papers, brush, and ink on it.
“Sit.”
Jonah took a seat and held the brush in his hand. He examined it for a bit and found that it was slightly different from what’s seen on Earth or the brush he used for Talisman’s crafting.
“Calligraphy is the art of lettering words in an artistic, expressive, and harmonious manner. That’s what you learned on Earth. However, there’s another, more expressive, type of Calligraphy. We call it Spirit Calligraphy. For us, Calligraphy is just an imitation to it. You can say that talisman’s master are all proficient in spirit calligraphy to some extent. However, like me, there are people who purely study spirit calligraphy. The difference between a normal calligraphy and spirit calligraphy is obvious from the name. Spirit Calligraphy is interpolated with spiritual energy to make the letters more alive. Furthermore”
Mr. Ebro started explaining the basic knowledge about Spirit Calligraphy. Jonah didn’t have any knowledge about the normal. Unknowingly, Jonah has picked up another profession to pursue. Time passed
