The Hero System - Chapter 6

Two days later.

Jonah woke up and stretched his body. He glanced at the clock and found that it was only 06:45 AM. He looked at his sleeping mother and decided to cook her something while he still has time before school.

Jonah went to the fridge and took out two eggs, bacon, and toast. He started cooking while his mother was still asleep.

The last two days, Jonah spent them at home. He didn’t get any new quests. He asked the system and it said that nothing happened that require him to take action. Jonah felt that it was strange.

Jonah concluded that the system didn’t give quests for everything. Only things that can either benefit him, teach him something, or end up badly if left to the authorities.

So Jonah just lazed around, studied, and tried to figure out the system’s functions. He spent the last two days thinking of ways he’d use his new skill.

“Mom, I made breakfast.” Jonah placed the plates on the table. His mother woke up and nodded. She gazed warmly at her son’s cooking before starting to eat.

After eating, his mother changed her clothes and went to work. Jonah also started to wear his school’s uniform. At the same time, he re-read the skill’s description.

[Spiritual Sense. Level 1: Using spiritual energy to sense the surrounding in 5 meters radius. Level up: 25 Spirit Points.]

At first, Jonah couldn’t understand what this energy was. He didn’t sense anything different after he received the skill. However, since the system said he got this skill, then there’s something called Spiritual Energy. When Jonah realized this, he remembered the young man who tried to kill him. Maybe he used this energy?

After he received this skill, Jonah went to sleep and decided to figure out how the skill worked in the morning. However, he found skin filled with black stuff when he woke up. Jonah almost vomited when he saw his body like that. He hurriedly went into the bath and cleaned his body. Thankfully, his mother was asleep.

When Jonah was out of the bath, he felt like he could sense everything around him. He can walk eyes closed and still manage to navigate his way. This was properly the effect of his skill.

Jonah locked the door and headed to school.

“Jonah! Are you alright now?” Jonah met Leo in class, he seemed quite worried about him.

“Yeah, nothing serious.”

“Nothing serious? You do realize that you fell off a six-story building, right?” Leo asked furrowing his brows. No one should survive such a thing unscratched.

“The doctor also said it was a miracle.” Jonah smiled helplessly.

“A miracle indeed Jonah, you should know that everyone in the school is talking about you. They all think you tried to kill yourself.” Leo whispered.

“What do you think?” Jonah asked with a raised brow.

“I know you wouldn’t do such a stupid thing!” Leo shook his head. Jonah smiled and nodded.

They had math for their first period. Jonah had already memorized everything in the book so he didn’t need to listen. He kept trying to figure out his new skill.

While sitting in his chair, Jonah can feel everything around him like they were his own body. He felt like a lake that can sense what its water is touching.

This skill didn’t only enhance his vision, but also enhanced his reflexes. He can now respond immediately to anything less than 5 meters away.

‘Damn, that guy keeps playing with his nose Dammit, Leo, you don’t need to write everything the teacher says! Whoa, that girl is taking selfies mid-class?’

Jonah felt like a god observing others when he used his skill. However, the system said something that poured a bucket of cold water on him.

‘Fuck! You should’ve told me earlier!’ Jonah panicked and withdrew his energy. He didn’t want to be targeted once again. He looked around and saw no one looking at him, so he heaved in relief. However, Jonah didn’t know that a girl glanced at him from afar.

Ding Dong

The bell rang signaling the end of morning classes. Jonah told Leo that he’s going to buy something to eat and left the class.

The cafeteria was in the other building across the sports teams’ field. Jonah walked through the walkway on the side heading to the building.

Jonah bought a sandwich and went to take the stairs to head back to class.

‘What the fuck?’

Jonah looked around and didn’t see anything.

Jonah heard a gunshot and he immediately used his skill. When Jonah’s energy spread 5 meters around him, he can feel the bullet heading to his head. Jonah’s mind was a mess. He instinctively moved his head slightly away from the bullet. This inhuman response was thanks to his spiritual energy but he felt like his whole body aching.

The bullet was going to pass him and Jonah sighed in relief. However, suddenly the bullet changed direction and headed toward his head.

Jonah was dumbstruck. How can this be fucking possible?! He looked at the incoming bullet with regret. If he upgraded his agility, he wouldn’t be in such a situation. What’s the use of intelligence and spiritual energy if he doesn’t have the vessel to utilize them?

Cling!

Jonah heard the sound of metals clinging. He looked at what used to be the bullet, but it was now replaced with a sword.

“What’s the meaning of this? Ren.” A voice came from ahead. Then, a youth with a shade of brown hair walked out of thin air.

“I should be the one asking this question, what the hell are you doing?” The girl holding the sword said as she sheathed her sword. She had waist length black hair and black eyes.

“He’s obviously up to no good!” The youth said as he pointed to Jonah.

“You’re wrong. He’s in my class. He just awakened.” The girl said with an expressionless face. The youth glanced at Jonah and then disappeared again.

[Ding! The spiritual barrier disappeared!]

Jonah was wearing a what-the-fuck dumbfounded expression when the system sounded. However, he had no time to be happy because he almost got killed for the second time.

“You’re alright?” The girl asked after she saw Jonah’s face.

“Alright? Yeah I am” Jonah was still in a daze. Everything happened so quickly that he didn’t know have time to digest it.

“Good. Follow me.” The girl said and walked away without waiting. Jonah stood there looking at her back. He can only take his sandwich and tag along.

Five minutes later, the two sat in front of each other on a sofa in a luxurious office. The girl was silently sipping her tea without saying anything. Jonah watched her helplessly.

Since he still has time for lunch, Jonah unwrapped his sandwich and started eating. The two sat there silently. One was eating, the other was drinking.

“When did you awaken?” The girl asked after both of them finished.

“From sleep? This morning” Jonah answered with confusion. Why did she suddenly ask such a thing?

“You are you for real?” The girl’s brow twitched.

“Yeah, otherwise Awaken from what?”

“Your spiritual energy!” The girl said with a frown.

‘The fuck? System, is she talking about the skill?’

“I’ve started using spiritual energy the day before yesterday,” Jonah told the truth. The girl has already saved his life.

“I see.” The girl nodded after pondering a bit.

“What happened earlier?” Jonah asked with caution.

“You shouldn’t mind that. That guy thought you were a Deviant User.”

“Deviant?”

“People who use spiritual energy to hurt others and do wrongdoings.”

“Why would he think that?”

“Because you were leaking your spiritual energy like a maniac.”

Jonah didn’t know what to say. He thought that he has already stopped using his skill.

‘System, what is she talking about?’

‘The fuck is that?’ Jonah was confused.

“It’s alright to be confused. However, you need to do something about it.”

“Okay.” Jonah nodded. He didn’t know how but he’ll try doing something about it.

“Alright. Lunch break is almost over.” The girl said and stood up.

“Wait! What’s your name?” Jonah stopped her.

“Ren Raynol,” Ren said.

“Ren. First of all, thank you for saving me. Second, I want to know more about spiritual energy.”

“We can talk about that tomorrow. Come to this room at lunch. I’ll also help you with your spiritual energy control.” Ren smiled and nodded.

Ren left the room and Jonah also followed. He went back to class and he couldn’t get his mind off the whole spiritual energy thing.
