The Idol’s Wife - Chapter 308
Mirae was sitting at the doctor’s office, nervously glancing at the clock. Sunye had accompanied her on her bequest and noticed her fidgeting fingers. She held Mirae’s palm in an assuring way.
“Mirae, relax,” she said. “It’s just a checkup.”
“I’m scared Sunye,” Mirae admitted. “I can’t help but think of all the things that could go wrong.”
“Mirae, it’s a pregnancy test,” Sunye pointed out. “You’ve already given your urine sample and they’ll figure out the rest. It’s not that hard!”
“No, it’s not that,” Mirae said, shaking her head. “It’s just that…”
She did not know how to explain it. What if she was pregnant? Then what would happen? Or what if she was not pregnant? Then what will come next? Whatever the outcome was, the threat of the Cartel remained over their heads. A new life would complicate matters for them and yet, a part of her desperately wanted it to be true.
“Mirae, nothing will happen,” Sunye stressed. “Listen, this may even be a false alarm!”
Mirae took a deep breath. She had no way to explain her turmoil because it was hard to determine the future. The path ahead of them was dark and unknown. Can they handle it at all? KJ’s tryst with time had deadly consequences in the other timeline but what if their mistakes are repeated. They may be older and wiser but history always repeated itself which only scared her more.
Her hand rested on her flat stomach. Was she really pregnant?
In all honesty, the idea of having a family with the man she loved was one of her most treasured wishes. In her mind, she pictured their little family, happy and cheerful without worrying about the Cartel. A little boy with KJ’s looks would probably chase his green eyed younger sister around the house while the parents will cuddle on a sofa, watching them play. The vision brought a smile to her lips.
“Mir?” Sunye’s voice broke through her reverie.
“Huh?” she asked, startled.
“The doctor is calling for you,” Sunye informed her. Mirae gulped. Her hands were clammy and she was extremely scared of what was about to happen. Was she pregnant? Was she not pregnant?
The thought about the future was unbearable and suddenly, she had the urge to flee the place.
“Mirae, you need to go in,” Sunye encouraged her. “I’ll hold your hand, alright? You’re not alone in this.”
Mirae could not speak but was grateful for Sunye’s presence. There was no way she would be able to handle this alone and she wished KJ was there with her. But Hyun Jung whisked him away for some urgent work and god knows how long it would take them.
“Come on,” Sunye said, taking her arm and gently helping her to stand. Mirae leaned on to her for support, not trusting her feet.
They entered Doctor Kim’s chamber. She looked up and said, “Please be seated.”
Mirae and Sunye took the seats opposite to the doctor. She was a strict looking professional yet had an empathetic look on her face. The doctor sensed that Mirae was very nervous about it which was natural in women who first start to suspect their pregnancy.
“Don’t be scared, Mirae,” she said in a calm manner. “I have your reports here with me.”
She took up a bunch of envelopes which had the results in them. Mirae whimpered a little. Her legs were shaking and her hand was tightly gripping Sunye’s palm.
“It’ll be alright,” Sunye assured her. She turned to the doctor. “What’s the result, doctor?”
The doctor took out the papers. Mirae held her breath, praying. But what was she praying for? She had no idea.
“The results are…” the doctor began.
….
Hyun Jung dropped KJ off at his mansion. “You sure you don’t wanna come up?” KJ asked. “Mirae is home and she will be thrilled to meet you. After all, we have been a little distant ever since Jade…”
He trailed off, not being able to talk about Jade. He simply was not ready to process his grief over losing his old friend.
Hyun Jung gave him a friendly pat. He knew how much KJ was attached to that cat and it was his only companion during his hard times. It was not easy to get over the loss of a friend and KJ had lost many over his lifetime.
“He’s in a happier place KJ,” Hyun Jung said, trying to console him. “Besides, remember what Miss Sohee used to say whenever you missed your parents?”
“That those who leave us eventually find a way to return to us,” KJ mused. It was ironic how true her words were. Even though he had left Mirae in one timeline, he somehow found his way back to her in another time. It was almost like they were fated to be together no matter where they were.
“I’ll head off home,” Hyun Jung said. “I should be appeasing Somi. Lately, she has been a little depressed.”
“Why?”
“I have no idea,” Hyun Jung shrugged. “She’s been a little off about something.”
“You should talk to her,” KJ suggested. “Find out what’s bothering her. Otherwise, you’ll end up proposing to her at the wrong time.”
“True,” Hyun Jung said thoughtfully.
“Have you planned it yet?” KJ asked. “Where will you pop the question?”
“I’m thinking of doing it at home,” Hyun Jung said. “How…I’m not sure. But I’ll make it really special for her. She made a lot of progress at therapy and is much more livelier now. Her past traumas have diminished a lot and the doctor even said she can live a normal life without medication.”
“That’s great!” KJ exclaimed. He was truly happy for his friend and could not wait to tell Mirae about the good news.
“You should go,” Hyun Jung said. “Mirae is waiting for you. Otherwise she’ll scold me for keeping you out late and I don’t wanna earn the CEO’s wrath!”
“Alright,” KJ sighed. He knew that Mirae had probably visited the doctor that day with Sunye and was anxious all by herself. Whatever the news was, he would handle it calmly to avoid being disappointed.
He bid farewell to Hyun Jung and went into the mansion. To his surprise, the whole place was dark.
“Mirae?” he called out. But there was no response.
“Mirae?” he called her name again. Silence.
What’s going on? He wondered. She had texted him to come home but why was the house dark and empty. Where were the servants?
Suddenly, the fireplace in the living room lit up. With that, several battery lit candles around the room also lit up, illuminating the area. The house was decorated with red roses. In the middle of the room, Mirae stood with a wide smile.
KJ did not need to be told about what she was about to share because her face said it all. Yet, he wanted her to say it. With tears of happiness in her eyes, she walked towards him.
Holding his hand, she said, “KJ…I’m pregnant. And I think it’ll be a boy.”
