The Indescribable Diary - Chapter 10
Yu Yi did not indulge in the fruits and wine. Yu Yi never drank. Even if he was in a game, he was sure that there were all kinds of negative buffs associated with drinking, such as getting drunk and the dizziness that was sure to follow. But the fruits, the fragrance emanating from them made Yu Yi immediately detect that something was very wrong. He didn’t dare to eat the fruits in fear of being drugged by a combination of fruits and fragrances.
After a while, a witch walked over. She walked through the crowd and found Yu Yi chatting with the tourists.
“Mister Fox, you have been invited by the Dazhu.”
Since the animal masks only blocked her eyes and nose, Yu Yi could clearly see the smile on her face. Her smile was an ordinary one, especially when compared to Dazhu’s smile. No chance of a Willpower check.
“Is there anything wrong?”
Yu Yi knew that something was going down when he was invited by the Dazhu. He stood up from his chair and looked at the witch questioningly.
“Dazhu said that she was curious about your mask. Hey, so you have the exact same mask as her?”
It was only now that the witch realised that the peculiar fox mask on Yu Yi’s face was exactly the same as the one Dazhu was wearing. The only difference was that the Dazhu’s mask was more solemn and didn’t cover the mouth, while Yu Yi’s mask covered his entire face. This was also the reason Yu Yi could abstain from drinking and eating fruits without being questioned.
Was it that he had been discovered at the start because of the mask? No, it shouldn’t be that simple. There must be some other reason.
Yu Yi followed the witch into the shrine. When entering the main gate, the ceremony had seemingly ended as the witches and immortals were streaming out of the shrine. Yu Yi brushed past them. Some of the witches looked at Yu Yi curiously.
No hidden dice throw, which meant that there were no other problems.
The witch brought Yu Yi to a room behind the shrine. She rapped on the door softly.
“Ma’am, the man you summoned is here.”
She was respectful. Even though Dazhu couldn’t see her, the witch spoke in a deferential tone, as though she wasn’t talking to a superior, but someone she truly looked up to.
“Let him in.”
After hearing the voice inside, the witch opened the wooden door gently and gestured for Yu Yi to go in. Obviously, only Yu Yi could enter the room.
It looks like the fox mask was a key item to trigger this segment of the plot. Otherwise, he would be thinking of other ways to enter this place or trying to sneak into the Red Fog Zone with his teammates. So far, however, he had only acquired some insignificant information.
He saw the witch who presided over the entire ceremony sitting in the middle of the room. At such a close distance, Yu Yi was able to observe her. Beautiful clothes, expensive jewellery, and a beautiful Tai Sword. Not just that, she must have an extremely beautiful face beneath the mask. This sort of clothing and decorations didn’t fit the witches. The brooch, which was shaped like the statue, showed her prestigious identity too. No pious believer would place the statue of their God on their hair. Hmmm, perhaps Huaxia people were an exception.
“Tourist from afar, please remove your mask. There is no need to be too careful here. I just have a few small questions.”
After hearing this almost indescribable voice, Yu Yi removed the fox mask and bared his face. It was a dangerous move. If he kept the mask on, he could swap the mask for a hidden identity. Removing the mask exposed himself completely. If there was a chase, there was no chance he’d escape, which increased the risk. However, it wasn’t a moment to hesitate.
“KP, I want to play a Psychology move.”
[.rd=67. Failed]
“How about Anthropology?”
[.rd=90 Failed]
Fine, so both Psychology and Anthropology had failed. Since there was no way to decide if the character before him was human, he would just have to follow her instructions.
[.rd=3]
Just as Yu Yi was removing the mask, the KP suddenly rolled the dice. Yu Yi didn’t know what exactly the KP rolled, but he knew that an NPC skill had been activated. Three point dice roll – it was a definite success. Apart from some very specific skills, most skills took more than 5 points to initiate. Call of Cthulhu was an exception, as some skills required 0 points to initiate.
This shitty KP didn’t even dare to roll the dice openly?!
“Greetings, respectable witch. If you were wondering where the mask came from, I bought it from a small shop in the Old City area”
There was no point in denying these things, as the truth could be revealed with the slightest investigation.
“Yeah, I thought so. And then? What else did that stupid mother of mine say?”
Da Zhu’s tone was impassive and unaffected. Her question about the mask was merely an excuse to know more about the things Yu Yi had learnt from the Old City.
To lie or to be honest?
The question put Yu Yi in a difficult place. If he lied, he might be found out. The NPC skill, which was just activated, might see through his lie. But to tell the truth…
Whatever, he’ll tell the truth!
“Just some complaints from an old mother. Your majesty, you have a mother who loves you dearly.”
He recounted the words of the old woman quickly.
“Tourist from afar, you have been honest. Hmm, to be honest, that old woman really annoys me with her tendency to complain. If she made you uncomfortable, then I apologise. Now, I hope this vacation leaves you with only happy memories.”
So a Psychology skill… Good thing he hadn’t lied. She probably wanted to know if I had any other plans. Whew! Not too bad.
“Of course. I’ve had so many precious memories here. This place is beautiful. I want to live here.” Relieved, Yu Yi flashed a genuine smile.
“In that case, I can allow you to live here as an Official. Are you willing to?”
The conversation suddenly took a turn.
“Huh? About that… Errr… Although I would love to, but just like you, I have family members who I care about. So I don’t think I can. I don’t have a choice.”
Stunned, Yu Yi realised that he had been tricked. He grinned awkwardly, as he realised that his flattery had been exposed.
However, this position was really a high-ranking one. He could become an Official just by staying here… An Official was the most powerful person in the shrine. This wasn’t a decision that can be made by any random witch. He thought about the respectful way the other witch had treated her and seemed to understand something. But wouldn’t it be dangerous like this?
“Hahaha, of course I’m joking. But my offer still stands if you would like to stay.”
Whilst saying this, the witch gestured for him to leave.
Yu Yi bowed courteously before slowly backing out of the room. He breathed out deeply. Whew, nothing had happened. It was so good to be released. She must still be suspicious though. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have offered him to stay here. No way was this a place for normal people! His card would be ripped apart for sure.
He backed out of the room and realised that the main gate had been opened by the witch. She curtsied at Yu Yi and retreated to the room.
“Da Zhu, it’s time…”
Behind the door, Yu Yi could only hear the first few words they said.
“KP, I would like to play an Eavesdrop.”
[.rd=32, Success.]
“Da Zhu, we should enter the Fog Zone to complete the final ceremony.”
“Apart from the one who just left, how many tourists are willing to go there?”
“31.”
“That’s enough.”
After hearing this, Yu Yi left the place immediately. The Fog Zone? The last ceremony… Hmm, the show was finally on! His journey here wasn’t wasted. After leaving here, he would contact Yatok and company and think of a way to enter the Fog Zone.
After coming out of the shrine, Yu Yi was taunted by a group of middle-aged men. They asked him how Da Zhu looked and whether she was pretty. Yu Yi was too lazy to argue with them. If she wasn’t beautiful, then why would they be charmed in the first place?
“Now, everyone. Apart from these few, please follow the Official downhill.”
Soon, a witch came out to announce that 31 tourists had been selected, while the rest were led downhill by the Official.
