The Indescribable Diary - Chapter 26
With torches in hand and a full moon above, the few of them stood at the door of the church.
“I want to play an Inspection.”
Yu Yi, who had the highest Inspection value, rolled the dice for Inspection. It was common sense to play an Inspection when everyone goes. However, it was also common sense not to conduct Inspections on suspicious creatures. That would cost dearly. Inspection and Eavesdropping were often used, but they sometimes depended on environment and time as well. For example, Yu Yi would never dare to use his Eavesdropping and Inspection skills at night.

[The church remains the same, as in your memories. It has seen better days, but it’s as magnificent as it has ever been. In fact, many consider the church to be a landmark of the town, just that the dirt road before it has been replaced by a highway. Although there are no car tracks, there are footprints around. The church is not empty.]
As the Inspection content appeared, the church showed its silhouette in the moonlight.
“There are still people inside the church, are we just too lucky?”
Of course, there would be danger.
Without a word, Huahua took out her AK47. From her looks, she looked more like a terrorist than an assassin.
Juzi pushed the door to the church. It was dark inside. Although there was moonlight, there was no way for someone to decipher what was inside. However, shadows seemed to move inside.
They shone their flashlights inwards without hesitation. The five of them saw rows of dark silhouettes within. A man, dressed like a gentleman, sat in the front row. The rest of the people wore suits and ties with sunglasses. Their faces were covered by strange cloth strips, as though they didn’t want others to see their appearances.
“Who are you?”
Fengye stood at the front and stared at the group of people.
Did they just barge into a cult gathering? From the information they had acquired earlier about local churches being linked to the mafia… Were they looking at the mafia? Why would they gather here in the middle of the night with the lights off?
“Who are you? I don’t think you are here to pray. It’s the middle of the night.”
The leader looked at them with a blank expression. He wasn’t shocked or angered by their intrusion. In fact, it was as though they weren’t capable of displaying emotion.
“We’re from the town. We’re here to pack up the things the late priest left behind.”
Although Fengye was an archaeologist by profession, he still had quite a high level of conversation skills. He was able to converse rapidly, as well as to cajole and convince. His set of skills were quite rare for an archaeologist.
“Things he left behind?”
The leader seemed confused.
“The priest had passed away. We found his body at the parade square at the East side of town. We were brought up by him from childhood, and we’re here to pack his things.”
After hearing about the death of the priest, a strange expression flashed across the leader’s face. This expression betrayed his guilt and anxiety. He was definitely a plot-related NPC.
“Oh? That’s… that’s such a disaster…”
He mumbled something that no one could hear clearly.
“How about you? Why are you still praying here? It’s late.”
“Nope, we’re waiting here for the priest’s return. There’s one thing that he must do… however, since we’re in this situation, we might have to choose another person.” The man stood up from his chair and paced around for a moment before looking up. “Looks like the few of you are quite upset by his departure. My condolences for your loss. Perhaps, you should take some time to calm down.”
“You’re related to his death?”
Huahua’s face contorted with anger as she lifted the AK47 in her hands.
“Nope, we’re actually close friends for many years, but I know who did it. If I tell you, what will you do?”
The man was strangely calm, especially with a muzzle pointing at him.
“Of course we’ll take revenge for the priest! He loved me more than my own father!!!”
One had to admit that Huahua’s performance was pretty good. She played her character well. She acted like a complete moron with all muscle and no brain. With this strategy, Huahua could trick their opponents into thinking that she was the group’s weakest link, and by extension attempted to use her to break the group. If they really did that, then they would’ve fallen completely into Huahua’s trap.
In real life, Huahua was a rich lady who controlled global conglomerates. In other words, out of the five people, Yu Yi was the poorest one.
“Calm down, man. That’s what we want too. However, you have to show us that you have the ability to do so.”
The man was steady, with no sign of fear.
“Like how?” Fengye looked at him calmly.
“Fine, if you’re willing to, we have to spend some time to get to trust you. If you really are the priests’ friends, you probably wouldn’t mind us getting to know you a little better.”
Obviously, the man seemed to have a task for them.
“That’s if you can help us avenge the priest. So, what would you like to know?”
Fengye reached out and pushed his non-existent glasses up. He looked at the man expressionlessly. He acted as the leader of the team, but was in fact the most useless of them all.
“There’s not much I need to know. If you really are someone from here, then we would know you anyway. Now you need to attain my trust…” The man knocked on his walking stick. “Go to the hospital. If the priest is really dead, I need you to go to the hospital to look for the priests’ body. He has something that I need. That something would solve the entire case too. I hope you can get it to us before the enemy lays their hands on it.”
The cross!
Immediately, everyone recalled the eerie skeleton-studded cross that Yu Yi found on the priest’s body.
“And then?”
“We’ll talk about that later. If you can do it, call me at this number,” said the man as he passed over a business card.
“Yeah, if it’s them, they would show their hand early too… Bad choices…”
Strange words flowed from his mouth. He wasn’t coherent at all as his voice faded. He mumbled beneath his breath as he walked past them, with his companions trailing behind. It was only then when everyone realised that there were at least a dozen people here. If they ended up fighting, they’d have no advantage.
[Wow! This jerk! Can I just shoot him?!] Huahua grabbed her AK47 and typed out a private message.
[Let’s keep calm. There’s too many people outside. To be fair, I feel like backstabbing him too.] Yu Yi’s grip tightened around the M1911 hidden in his sleeve.
[Chill! Let me play an Anthropology. If we pass, then we fight!] Lizi seemed to crave chaos.

[Although the man had strange expressions, he was undoubtedly human.]
[Right! Time to get him! I recommend him…] Juzi seemed to be swayed too.
[If you can’t see his henchmen, you cannot conduct an analysis.]
[I recommend not to attack.]
After hearing this, no one had the urge to kill the man. The Anthropology check showed the leader as a human, but if his henchmen were not, they would have an advantage. Might be creatures out to earn their share.
“There’s still one hour for us to move, before it’s time for us to return. Let’s search the church.”
Looking at the man and his henchmen in the distance, Juzi heaved a sigh of relief before turning his head to look at the church in the darkness. In this silent night, the church was like a beast awaiting for its victim.
