The Indescribable Diary - Chapter 8
After putting on the mask, Yu Yi felt a tinge of discomfort. It was as though something was squirming on his face. However, when he took the mask off, there was nothing on the mask. It was just an ordinary wooden mask. Yu Yi realised all of a sudden that it might be a negative BUFF.
He took out a mirror and looked at the fox-faced mask. With white as the base color, red strokes as decoration, and hair painted on with black paint, the mask was lifelike. Through the mirror, Yu Yi scrutinised the mask carefully.
“KP, I want to play an Inspection.”
Alright, time to die. Since he instinctively felt that there was something wrong, he had to understand why. In the worst case scenario, he would only be temporarily insane.
[.rd=54. Passed]
In Yu Yi’s field of vision, the mask’s reflection looked as though it was moving and alive. The hair drawn in black was slightly moving in the wind. The pupils, representing his eyes, dilated. The fiery red began to flow, as though it was blood.
[Conducting Inspiration Check —.rd=79, failed.]
Everything disappeared from Yu Yi’s sight. Everything returned to the way they were. The fire which flowed like blood vanished, just as the dilated pupils.
“Whew, what a near miss! Good thing Inspiration didn’t pass the check. I almost had to SC.”
Yu Yi’s Inspiration was quite high at 75 points, so much so that he was worried when he heard that there would be an Inspiration check. He didn’t expect the Inspiration check to fail, so he felt glad. He was a little disappointed, though. If the Inspiration check had succeeded, he would definitely have received some extra information. He might even know who was the main enemy in this plot. Although it was quite possible that he would have lost San value, the information would definitely be worth it. Sadly, the Inspiration check had failed. This meant that he didn’t have to go through the SC, but at the cost of extra information.
“What happened?”
The two beside Yu Yi realised that something was wrong.
“Nothing. My Inspiration failed, which isn’t a big deal. Don’t look into the mirror when wearing the mask or something bad can happen.”
Of course, the fact that something was off with his mask didn’t mean that the issue applied to others as well. For safety’s sake, however, Yu Yi decided to tell his teammates so that they won’t accidentally go through an SC.
“Right, what are your character notes?” Yu Yi had only thought about this. In this game, the system would assign random character notes after each character card was generated.
“I’m a medical doctor. When making medical judgments, I can get additional points.”
Yatok didn’t feel like it was something he needed to conceal, so he generously offered his notes.
“An underwhelming performer. Likely to fail when making artistic judgments, but once successful, I can offer fantastic results.”
Opaci’s character note was to upgrade all artistic judgments to extremely difficult ones. If the judgement was made correctly, then it would usually be the best outcome. However, the rate of failure was high.
“How about Yu Xing?”
Both of them looked at Yu Yi.
“Mine… never mind, I won’t say it. It’s a negative effect anyway.”
He can’t say that his character notes denoted that he was gay! Everyone would laugh at him. But then again, it wouldn’t be a completely negative trait. His charm was quite effective for males, after all.
To avoid losing each other, they walked closely together as they weaved through the crowds towards the ceremonial square. It was good that Yatok’s physique was tall. Ignoring the people rolling their eyeballs in discontent, they squeezed to the front of the crowd. The ceremony had just begun.
At this time, Yu Yi noticed that there was a small road at the right side of the square. It was fenced off, which prohibited tourists from entering. Thinking back, it was likely a path towards the Red Fog zone. Red carpets were now splayed on the ground, with flowers and perfume, permeating the air with a strange fragrance.
“Yatok.”
Yu Yi looked at Yatok after sniffing the air.
Yatok shook his head and said, “The medical check passed. It’s not toxic, and wouldn’t become toxic if it undergoes a reaction. It’s just that I have no idea what it is.”
Not toxic. That was good. The rest was not important. As long as it couldn’t poison or induce hallucinations, then it was not a threat.
Gradually, the atmosphere began to become heated. The ceremony had begun. There was movement on the road Yu Yi had taken note of earlier. As they came closer, Yu Yi realised that it was the ceremonial contingent. The two rows of four in the front were dressed as immortals, while oddly-dressed women followed them. Were the women witches? He didn’t know – there wasn’t enough time to share information with Yatok, so Yu Yi didn’t know much about the history of the island.
It was worth mentioning that without exception, the immortals and witches had animal-resembling masks on their faces.
In the centre of the contingent, four barely dressed young men carried a peculiar statue. Yu Yi wasn’t able to describe how exactly the statue looked, apart from the fact that it was vague and indistinct. A witch stood before the statue – she stood out from the rest in terms of her clothing, as she was dressed in especially luxurious and noble robes. Instead of a ceremonial coin, she was holding a sheathed Tai Sword. The gold-plated scabbard and the diamond-embedded hilt made the Tai Sword breathtakingly beautiful.
It was worth mentioning that the mask worn by the solemn witch was almost exactly the same as the one Yu Yi was wearing. White base, red decorations, fox-shaped. The expressions of the masks were different, though. On Yu Yi’s mask, the nose of the fox was more pronounced, as though he was sniggering. The expression of the fox on the witch’s mask was much more serious.
The witch’s vision swept across the crowd. In an instant, their eyes met. Yu Yi heard the dice rolled by the KP. There was no prompt this time. A hidden dice throw with an unknown result. Yu Yi clearly felt the body of the witch freeze, but she quickly looked away without spending too much time looking at Yu Yi.
Damn, he was spotted! This was bad!
The hidden dice roll just now depended either on luck or inspection! Either way, this was bad!
“I’ve been discovered.”
Yu Yi backed off silently and disappeared into the crowd. No one around them seemed to notice that he had gone missing.
“What now?” The two who backed away with Yu Yi didn’t turn around. Pretending to look at the ceremonial stage, they asked, “Even if we’re discovered, nothing too bad can happen. We haven’t done anything illegal yet.”
“The KP just threw a hidden dice throw, so I feel that something isn’t right… We’ll split apart and communicate over text from now on.”
“What do we do after the ceremony?”
“They’ll move up the mountain afterwards. I’ll think of a way to follow them. While all of their attention is here, you two try to explore the Fog Zone. Be careful though, something’s wrong back there.”
After a short discussion, the three went their different ways. Yu Yi was once again acting alone. Since he had been discovered, he didn’t want to burden his teammates. Even if he was caught and killed, his teammates would be able to continue the investigation.
When Yu Yi played other similar games, he often saw one idiot making wrong moves and dragging down the entire team. The whole team would die shortly afterwards. This gave them the nickname “Teamkill Engines”.
Once again, he returned to the stage-front. In the crowd, Yu Yi gawked at the witch. She was dancing mesmerizingly before the statue, as though she was performing some strange ritual. It was lucky that she wasn’t naked. Otherwise, the Black Goat, or her descendants would appear.
Just as Yu Yi was watching the dance, the KP once again rolled a hidden dice. After the dice roll ended, Yu Yi realised that the expression on the man beside him became slightly slow. He recovered in an instant, but now, he was acting in a crazed manner.
That hidden dice throw… was it a charm or something else? Either way, it should be a battle of wits. Did Yu Yi manage to escape unaffected because he passed the dice throw?
Two hours passed in a flash. The witches began to throw lucky wreaths. Those who got their hands on lucky wreaths would be able to follow the witches into the Godly Forest and receive their blessings. If it was another sightseeing spot. It would just be a simple ceremony. However, Yu Yi had sustained two hidden dice rolls consecutively. The way the witches threw the wreaths was skillful. Although it was supposed to be up for grabs, every throw had landed in the hands of their intended recipients. In other words, people who had been charmed.
Just as Yu Yi was absorbed in his thoughts, cheerings resonated in the crowd. Something flew towards Yu Yi, which he grabbed subconsciously. He paused to look at it, and realised that it was a gorgeous wreath. He glanced at the ceremonial stage, and saw the witch making a throwing gesture. Obviously, she had thrown the wreath, which was targeted at him.
He really was the target.
