“What do you want to eat? I have some … uhm chocolates and apples?” I ask as I open the somewhat empty refrigerator.
With Hora gone on a family trip, I can barely operate let alone take care of my refrigerator.
The man on the couch shakes his head as he answers “No, eating late at night is not a good habit, however if you have any soju, you can give me a glass” He says with a hearty smile
“I can do that for you Hyung” I smile as I grab two green bottles from the fridge and a couple of glasses from the cupboard.
Taking a seat on the sofa, I pour a couple glasses as I hand it over to him “Here you go ”
“Thank you” He answers as he takes a sip, exhaling in delight.
“So what did you call me here for” He grumbles as he faces me
“Well Soo Man, as the head of M.S. I thought it would be best to get this directly from you.”
“What will that be?”
“I have a script: I want to shoot a film”
“Well rich people clearly have some fun hobbies.”
At this moment, I can feel my heart jump slightly, as he carefully sizes up the boy in front of him.
Pointing towards the file on the table, I say “Read that, let me know what you think”
He smirks slightly as he obliges, “Well I’ll give it a go.”
Slowly but surely, I see his eyes read the title before moving turning the page, soon the glass that was filled is emptied as he continues to read, seconds turn into minutes as minutes turn into hours.
He puts the script down as he uses his tongue to brush his teeth.
“Interesting..” He exclaims slowly, ” 1 million dollars” He says.
“What?”
“This script is worth 1 million dollars”
Seeing his interest, I knew he was the right man, ” I know, that’s why I spent 5 million to get it from the writer”
His ears perk up as his interest grows ever the more, “From who?”
“Lee Jeong”
“The director?”
Nodding slowly.
“So what do you want me to do with this?”
“I told you, I am going to shoot a film. I want this to be my directorial debut”
“A 20 year old debuting with a blockbuster… Now that’s something really fun. Count me in… how much do you need?”
“Well Funds aren’t an issue. I’m personally investing in this one. Maybe in the future, we can discuss PP (Product Placement)”
“You have more scripts?” He asks intrigued
“Not yet. But I will”
“So … you have funds, a script, and a director. So, what you are probably lacking is a crew, and staff”
“That’s right”
“Well, M.S has just started an acting department, we are not as big as the main acting agencies but as the Vice President. Don’t you think you need to have a bit of responsibility little bro?”
“Well Mr Soo, that had definitely been the main purpose of my invitation”
“Why does it always feel like, I’m making a deal with the devil when we talk?”
“Even the devil is not as handsome as me though” I retort back
“As if, cocky little prick”
“Anyway, what’s with the title ? Ajoessi (Mister) can’t you think of anything more creative”
“That’s the short title, I’m think of using ‘The Man From Nowhere’ as its theatrical release. Better right?”
“Are you sure you want to go with just that? I mean still not interesting”
“Don’t worry Hyung, I’m investing in this with my own cash, will be directing it and staring in it. I will make it a hit. No matter what it takes”
He stares at me for a second longer, “Hmm hmmm, I’ve been in this business long enough to say, that I have dealt with the shadiest of people before, from gangsters to politicians. But none of them have ever had that look you were so confidently”
“What look?” I can’t help but get intrigued
“Supreme arrogance, as if everything is going according to your plan. You don’t seem fazed at all. Its scary.”
“Well, I did graduate top of my class”
“Even the best laid plans, fail Dylan.” He pours a glass of soju for himself once more, as he swirls the liquid creating a rift. “But I’ll trust you on this one.”
……
After a few hours of planning, I sit done thinking things over.
The Man From Nowhere of my past had an initial budget of $6 million, which in my perspective, came mainly from shooting costs and promotional stunts. Filming alone would cast a few million, most of which would be the actors and directors remuneration.
The Man From Nowhere was on of the greatest action films of Korean history. A sophisticated yet alluring Korean version of the block-buster Taken starring Liam Neesam.
It’s a simple good versus evil story where good prevails.
An ex-con tries to rescue the girl next door from the mob and the more emotionally invested the her gets the more violent the film becomes.
The blueprint is simple: Cast a heartthrob lead actor known for his soft roles (In this case, me) to lure in female filmgoers, then splatter the screen with enough blood to keep their male counterparts happy.
Now, since I had the completed script in my hands and the entire film in my head.
All I have to do is transpose it.
