The Last Kiss - Chapter 69 Love Story
Next day Jane changed her seat. We sat on the girls’ row. She tried her maximum to distance herself from him. The first hour was mathematics. Madam asked us to introduce ourselves. All did and Jane was proud to explain how wealthy she is than who she is but it was the bitter truth that none of the international students gathered there had any idea about her dad’s wealth and assets. She was not really introducing herself but promoting her father’s business and boasting about her wealth. None cared. Then came Desmond’s turn. Instead of explaining his backgrounds he explained his dreams hobbies etc. Of course he received good comments from faculty. Score 1 for Desmond. Jane 0.
He was different, loving and caring, entirely different from what Jane was. Frankly I was his good friend and Desmond became my friend just to get close to Jane. Ha ha… Our college days were awesome…
During first semester of our bachelors, there was a music program organised by arts department of our university. Many students gave their names to participate in this but most of them failed during the audition.
But Jane and Desmond made up to the end. Though audition was over, they had one month time to practice for this. It was during this time that Desmond decided to propose her.
He had informed me this in advance. I kept silent about this to Jane. Of course I admired their pair. I used to think that it would be soo nice if she be a good lady, who is a bit more helpful and loving and kind. She had all the worst characters of a spoiled millionaire kid. What more is required, she never considered poor people as humans.
It was during winter time. Jane and me were walking towards our hostel. Already snow is falling. We saw a beggar near the boys accomodation building. When we reached near him, Jane purposely caught my hand and decided to keep much distance from him.
“Ma’am, Can you help me find the owner of this coat.”, the old man’s face was pale.
“You know his name?” I asked. I felt he has not eaten anything today. He was that much tired.
“No maam, he is a fair guy and I think he is Irish.” he said.
“Is he staying here?”, pointing to the boys accomodation I asked.
“Yes Ma’am, he entered this building after giving me his coat yesterday. May God bless him. He is kind.”, he said.
“Hai, how are you uncle.”, I heard the voice of someone and turned. It was Desmond.
“I don’t want that. You keep it with you. By God’s grace I have an extra coat. You just keep it with you. ” The old man was happy on hearing this and he looked at Desmond’s eyes with thanks. He blessed him.
I smiled at them and crossed the road, towards Jane who was impatiently waiting for me. I heard from distance Desmond asking the old man whether he had anything to eat…
DESMOND was really a kind person. But he was interested in Jane even though he was aware that she is not kind.
Two three days after this incident, I had severe flu and was hospitalised. Without me Jane was helpless. She know nothing, not even to cook instant noodles even. Doctor advised me to take some congeee and no oily foods. Jane decided to cook that for me and went to our room.
She was walking back to hostel and on the way she saw an imported car coming from opposite side. When it reached near her, those inside the car throw empty bottle towards her. It hit on her head and started to bleed.
She was angry and without thinking anything, she took the bottle and throw it back. It hit the back window of the car. Done…Nothing more to say… 5 boys came out for the car. Of course sons of some wealthy men who believes themselves as rulers of the world.
Bad luck. She sensed danger and ran away. She ran and ran. They followed. She got tired and she even felt dizzy and her speed reduced.
They surrounded her. They were mocking and teasing her. That old beggar whom she gave that disgusted look came there from somewhere. He ran towards them and tried to stop them from hurting her.
The leader began to tore her dress apart.
Bang!!!!!!
A perfect hit with a cricket bat. Enough to make him unconscious. They all turned back. A whole cricket team was there and the one who hit the leader was…. Desmond. Of course they were more in number and the wealthy boys already lost their leader. Soon the boys heard police siren and ran towards their car.
She was unconscious. He took her to the hospital. Since I was already admitted there, Desmond requested the same room as mine for her. Same room.. two patients.
Jane woke up from coma and what she saw first was Desmond sitting on a chair near to her. She tried to sit but failed. No energy at all. Her face is pale now. She remembered the old beggar fighting with those boys. She was worried something happened to her. After she felt unconscious, she don’t know what happened to herself. Frankly, she thought she was raped.
Desmond saw her trying to sit and he helped her. She had IV line connected which kept her alive.
“How are you?” He asked. Tears were rolling down her eyes thinking of her bad fate. She cried. But seeing this, Desmond wondered.
“You are alright. Don’t cry. The old man alerted us that someone was in trouble and then he came to save you. I was playing cricket. All my friends were there. Only their leader was beaten up by me. That was enough for the others to run. You are rescued. Nothing wrong happened to you other than some tear in your cloth. Be cool Jane. We all are there with you. We want to see you smiling.”
She was thinking something…. Yes.. what did he say now? The old man informed them… Means that guy helped me. I hate him so much. I need to say thanks to him… But thank God he also said that nothing wrong happened to me… Am saved…. She was relieved.
“can I have some tea?”. She asked politely. Both me and Desmond froze for a moment. This side of her’s is not something we too were familiar with.
“Sure you can” he opened the flask and poured it out. “You want some? Sheila??” he asked. I shook my head. Only then she realised I am also lying there as a patient.
