The Legendary Actor - Chapter 57
Stanley gave a big smile at Renly’s thanks, “So what’s next, the album? ”
Renly tilted his head with a helpless expression, Stanley knew he was pushing too hard, so he raised his hands in the shape of surrender, and complained, “Nowadays, young people really don’t know how to be grateful.”
Seeing Renly’s gentle, humble smile, still not budging an inch, Stanley shook his head as if in resignation, though he still did not give up and asked, “What if “Cleopatra” is in the Billboard Top 10?”
Renly couldn’t help but laugh out loud, “Then I should be able to get a better house.” If it makes the Billboard Top 10, it should make a lot of money in royalties, even though it’s just a single.
Stanley was both amused and annoyed at the response.
“By the way, it’s Wednesday …” Renly had just opened his mouth when Neil’s voice came from behind him, “Renly, your phone!” Renly ignored it and opened his mouth, but Neil simply wouldn’t give up and took the phone Renly had left on the bar and brought it over, “It keeps ringing.”
Renly took the phone, but did not answer it immediately, and looked at Stanley again. Stanley nodded his head to show that he understood, “I know, don’t worry, just go.”
Renly gestured “OK”, looked at the clock on the wall, noticed that it was already 2:30, turned around, patted Neil’s arm and walked quickly toward the front door. He grabbed his jacket and his skateboard, said bye to Janice, and left the bar.
After stepping on the skateboard, he remembered the phone he had just missed, and after picking it up, he found that the other party had already hung up.
“Hello, this is Renly.” Renly said simply when the call came through.
“This is Roy Lockley.” The voice on the other end of the line also seemed crisp and clear, but Renly paused, the name not matching the image in his mind, and the person seemed to realize this, then added, “Official agent of the U.S. Actors Guild. ”
It dawned on Renly that it was the same agent who had helped him sign “The Pacific” contract, “High, Roy, good afternoon.” The subway had just stopped in sight, and Renly accelerated quickly, sprinting all the way into the subway.
“Yes.” Generally speaking, new actors are always flattered to receive a phone call from an agent or the U.S. actors’ union, as it often means a job has come to them, but Renly was calm and relaxed, as if it was a perfectly normal phone call. Roy was still a little uncomfortable with that, but at least he wasn’t as surprised as he had been the first time, “”The Pacific” is doing well, congratulations.”
Roy’s tone was a bit stiff, and after a couple of polite sentences, Renly’s low laugh could be heard on the other end of the line, “Thank you.” Generous and succinct, “So, you wanted to talk to me about something?” Clean and straight to the point.
Any newcomer, having just experienced the attention of “The Pacific”, will inevitably have a slight change of heart, but Renly’s candid posture showed the air of calmness and composure, but Roy’s fist swung on the cotton. He couldn’t help but be a little disoriented, which made Roy tug a corner of the mouth, laughing self-deprecatingly – years of experience, yet actually can’t act calmer than a 20-year-old kid.
“I’ve got an audition offer here for you. They couldn’t find your agent’s contact information, so they contacted me here.” Without further ado, Roy reverted to his usual stern demeanor, “You give me your agent’s phone number and I’ll get in touch with him.” He conveniently grabbed his notebook and ballpoint pen to record.
“I don’t have an agent.” Renly’s voice was looming over the roar of the subway.
“What?” Roy felt he wasn’t listening.
“I don’t have an agent,” Renly repeated again, without any hesitation or loss, just straightforward
This time Roy heard clearly, and the movement of his hands could not help but stop. The situation with “The Pacific” is now so lively, it is likely that many people are inquiring about Renly’s situation, although there is never a shortage of new talent in Hollywood, but those who can show such potential are absolutely sought after. How could those agents who behave like wolves and tigers and panthers easily miss someone like him? All of them had a discerning eye. They were opportunists who rather preferred killing a random person over letting go such a talent.
So, the only explanation is that Renly was not overwhelmed, still weighing the situation calmly.
Roy couldn’t help but think that the young man was an interesting character, and his thoughts went in circles in his head, “Well then …”. Roy looked at his timetable, “What time are you free tonight? ”
“I’m at Pioneer Village after six o’clock, and I’ll be there until midnight,” Renly replied dryly.
“Okay, I’ll meet you at Pioneer Village in the evening so we’ll meet in person.” After Roy made a note on his itinerary, the two men hung up without further pleasantries, the whole process taking less than a minute without any delay. Although this was Roy’s style, Renly worked too well with him, but the former was still a little uncomfortable at heart – such a newcomer was too alien.
Roy scratched his head as he looked at the full schedule. A public agent for the U.S. Actors Guild is a thankless job, too busy, yet only earning only a tenth of what the top agents earn, almost like doing charity.
In other words, this time it’s Roy, the next time the union will just send another agent, so it’s purely a onetime working relationship, no need to establish a personal connection.
But this time the situation was obviously very special. The interested party thought that Roy was Renly’s agent, and that’s why they called him.
Thinking about it, Roy didn’t bother any further, just thinking of it as another job. He was going to have dinner eventually anyway, just think of it as a business meeting dinner, yes.
An audition invitation? Considering that they invited him to an audition after watching “The Pacific” it was likely that the role is similar to Eugene in temperament and style, and that it is a delicate and emotional character.
If it continues on, is it not just repeating himself? He knows that it’s important to select carefully if an actor is just starting out. After playing too many similar roles in the beginning, people tend to have a fixed image of the actor which will prove extremely difficult to get rid of later on. The most typical example is the three lead actors of Harry Potter. After the end of the film series, all three of them have been working hard to get rid of the fixed image of the audience.
However, Renly also knew that he was completely overthinking things. For most new actors, there is no room to choose at all, and after a role makes a name for itself, it is inevitable that similar roles will follow, and if they refuse, it will be difficult to find work afterwards. It’s a dilemma.
And, yeah, he didn’t know what role was being offered.
In the midst of pondering, the train came to the station again, making him reflexively look up. Renly noticed that this is the station where he was going to get off, busy picking up the skateboard, he quickly rushed out of the subway doors, all thoughts are temporarily put to the back of the mind. Anyway, tonight all will be revealed.
