The Life of Maria Lewellin - Chapter 13
“May I ask one more thing?”
“What is it?”
“How did you end up raising him?”
I was really purely curious. Many people in this country also have pets, but I’ve never seen anyone have a beast as a pet before.
A wild animal is a wild animal. No matter how young it is, their wild habits still don’t completely disappear.
But I can’t help but laugh as I thought of Glick.
I’ve been staying together with Glick and taking care of him as his caretaker
It was worth it to raise him with affection. To put it simply, he missed the time to arrange the ranks.
“I picked him up. I found him abandoned in the woods.”
“He was abandoned?”
“That’s right.”
“Isn’t his mother there? She must be looking for him anxiously.”
“There’s none.”
Tsk, how blunt.
“I heard he usually take a walk around this time.”
“Yes. He must be frustrated….”
Achacha.
“He look stuffy because he’s been in there all the time. Fortunately, he was obedient.”
Then Ains asked me, as if he had been waiting.
“What did you do?”
“What?”
“Glick didn’t even listen to me until you showed up. If that’s the case, how the hell did you coax Glick into opening his mouth?”
“That’s because I can talk to animals.”
“…….what?”
He raised an eyebrow at me and I burst into laughter at his question
“I’m kidding. I’ve just seen animals following me since I was a kid. They seem to like me for some reason.”
This wasn’t a lie. I couldn’t raise an animal myself because my mother hated it, but sometimes when I went to my friend’s house who had a pet, they all came to me. Thanks to that, I was able to achieve my dream of becoming a veterinarian by studying animals who approach me.
It reminded me of the animal hospital that I used to go to after a long time. I was so happy to get a job. Tae-seok, you wouldn’t be in trouble because I disappeared, right?
“……did you?”
He already got a new employee, didn’t he? It’s already been six months after all.
“……did you.”
I hope Areum and Ppoppo are doing well. They were especially fond of my touch.
“Maria Lewellin.”
“Yes. Yes?”
The sudden sound of the name woke me up from my thoughts. As I turned my head in a hurry, my eyes met with Ains, who was looking this way.
“What are you thinking about? To such an extent that you don’t even notice when I’m talking to you.”
“….I’m just sad to think that I’m parting up with Glick tomorrow.”
I couldn’t say it was because I remembered my previous life. If I do that, I’ll be treated like a crazy person.
“I’ve been thinking about it since I first saw you.”
What?
“You, you’re really strange.”
“What?”
“It’s just…. “
“…..”
“I feel like you’re not from this country.”
(t/n: ohh he sharp)
“…….!”
Boom.
It felt like my heart was falling to the ground. At that moment, my whole body hardened, but my lips were flushed with a smile.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, the way you talk is odd. You use honorifics to the maids, but you use casual tones to me. Well, it’s not very polite so to say.”
What. That’s what you meant?
I was surprised when he said that I’m not from this country. I thought he’s stating the fact that I’m not the real Maria, so I thought my heart was falling to the ground.
I swept down my startled chest and only then could I smile.
“I didn’t have a chance to learn proper honorifics. But isn’t it okay since it’s easier to talk like this? “
“……”
“Wouldn’t it be okay?”
“……”
“Is… it not?”
“I’ll say yes.”
Anyway, he’s so mean.
In fact, it’s not like I cant do it properly. If I think of this world as an historical novel that I’ve been reading in the past, I’ll be able to imitate it just fine.
But only if you want to.
I’m already feeling my hands and feet curl up at the thought of using old-fashioned honorifics and pretending to be polite. Plus, I’ll finally leave the palace tomorrow anyway.
“Do you have any wish in mind?”
“Of course.”
Alright! At last, the time finally came.
Now, come on, ask me what it is.
I smiled and stared at Ains.
But what is this? Ains only continued his meal while gracefully using his knife.
In the end, I have to be the one who brought up the subject first.
“Why don’t you ask?”
“Because I know you’ll say it before I ask.”
“……”
“Am I wrong?”
“Haha, no. That’s very accurate.”
I was laughing but my veins are actually popping out in my temples. He’s not saying anything bad, but he always gets in my nerves.
“Then I’ll tell you. I need a land and a building. I also hope you give me a lot of money.”
You might think I sound snobbish. But I had no choice but to do this to achieve my dream.
My dream.
My dream is build an animal hospital and take care of sick animals.
As I said, people in this country also have many pets, but there was no professional animal hospital. For example, the leopard who was raised by the Crown Prince has no other choice but to take a medicine that was meant for humans.
It would definitely be hard to expect great results because of lack of equipment, but I wanted to raise and take care of animals in my own place and enjoy a little bit of happiness.
This is not an easy decision to make. Even now, I still have that natural desire in my heart to go back to the life I had before any of this, in my home where I originally lived.
But I couldn’t even find a clue how I got here, so there was nothing I could do. That’s right. You can’t give up your life on your own.
So I decided to leave Adela. I have to live anyway, so might as well experience various things after leaving in an environment like a squirrel’s wheel.
The problem was that I don’t have much money left in hand. At this rate, it was clear that I would be living in the street in a few days.
So what can I do? I need to do something to make ends meet.
“…….”
Ains was quiet. He looked lost in thought when I looked at him with his arms crossed.
‘You’re not saying no now, are you?’
He’s the crown prince of a country, and that’s not a difficult request.
The silence lasted for quite a long time. As soon as I was about to open my mouth one more time with anxiety, Ains looked at me with eyes on me.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes! Of course.”
“….alright. I’ll grant your wish.”
“Really? “
A big smile came out of my mouth. Unlike me, Ains still looked cold-hearted about how he reacted. Then, he followed with a wistful voice.
“Don’t get me wrong.”
“Yes?”
“I’ll never touch you.”
Huh? What do you mean all of a sudden?
(t/n: I dunno what it is, but I’m 100% sure he misunderstood something… )
I was puzzled by his sudden remark, but I don’t think it was the time to bite back. Ains’ expression was as firm as it could be. It was evident that he felt uncomfortable.
‘It’s really hard to keep up with his tempo.’
When I saw that his glass was empty, I hurriedly picked up the bottle of wine. He might feel better if he drink delicious alcohol.
“Would you like another drink?”
Then came an unexpected answer.
“You really don’t know anything about etiquette.”
The smile slowly disappeared from my face.
Ains, who turned his head, and met my eyes.
“Do you think the maids next to you are just standing for decorations? I’ve given you the honor to be treated like one of the VIPs, but now I see I’ve done something for nothing.”
“…..”
“For the time being, try to use the room you’re staying in. It’ll take a few days to get a place.”
At the end of that remark, Ains left his seat. Left alone, I blinked at the bewilderment.
What the hell does that mean? And it’s clearly a big mistake to offer to pour him a glass of wine.
“……”
That’s true. I don’t know much about any common etiquette and laws in this country.
But I was a little depressed.
……..I’m sure he could’ve understand enough to say it nicely.
◆◇◆◇◆◇
The next morning, I went to Glick’s room without fail. When I went inside, Glick, who was grooming his front foot, raised his head.
“I’m here, Glick. Did you sleep well all night?”
I crouched in front of him and said hello. Glick stared at me without an answer, and after a while, he chatted out his words.
[Your clothes grow more and more colorful each day.]
“I can’t help it. I like comfortable clothes too, but all the maids bring are fancy dresses like this.”
I tried to ask Marilyn if I could wear any less fancy dresses, but I got scolded. That’s what I said on the first day, so she didn’t pick or bring any plain dresses since that day.
I soon asked Glick with a smile on my face.
“But it’s still pretty, isn’t it?”
[Pretty]
(t/n: maybe Glick really is the real ml? agajaja shoo kyooot)
!
“Really? “
[Clothes only. And the thing that glitters around your neck is pretty, too.]
Tsk, how mean.
I grumbled inside and opened the cage door. Even though I didn’t say anything, Glick knew and came out, and I rubbed his head and said,
“Say ah”
[Ah-]
Let’s see….
I scooted closer in his face and looked inside Glick’s mouth. My prediction was correct. It looks completely better all night, and now I can’t find any trace of the wound.
A smile of joy came out when I found out that he had finally recovered completely.
“Congratulations, Glick. It’s completely healed. It doesn’t hurt anymore, does it?”
[It doesn’t hurt.]
“You’ve done a great job.”
The herb must have made him feel foreign and hurt, but I was really proud of him who endured it well for a few days.
It was sad that I have to say goodbye to Glick soon.
“Do you want to go out and feel the wind breeze to celebrate with me?”
[I don’t move much during the day.]
“I know.”
That’s what you said yesterday.
[The sun is hot if you go out now.]
“Yeah. “
That’s what I said yesterday.
[But, I’m in a good mood so I’ll give you a special permission.]
My mouth gradually stretched into a smile and Glick turned his head to the side. I can’t believe he agreed in going out with me.
“Thank you. Then let’s go out together now.”
So with the help of the knights, I took Glick out the cage and headed at the back of the annex.
Surprisingly, the Crown Prince’s palace had a walking area and playground dedicated to Glick. Yesterday I saw that Glick climbed up a big tree at once and fell down a big branch for a long time.
(t/n: yes, leopards can climb trees!)
‘Which tree are you going to climb today?’
Contrary to expectations, however, Glick did not climb trees. After wandering along with me, he sat on his stomach on the great shade under the tree.
I sat beside him and asked Glick.
“You’re not climbing the tree today?”
[I will tomorrow. Today is a hassle.]
Pfft.
“Yeah, well, that happens sometimes.”
As Glick said, most big cats and wild animals are nocturnal..
During the day, when the sun is up, they rest or take a nap in the shade of a tree, and at night they hunt for food. Even if he lived in the palace, I’m sure he wouldn’t completely lost that instinct.
Suddenly a question came to my mind. Is Glick satisfied with his present life?
“Do you like living with Ains?”
[Sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it.]
I’m pretty sure that like meant he liked it when he gives him meat.
“When do you hate it?”
[I want to go for a walk, but he’s too busy. And I have to protect him because he’s a fool.]
(t/n: OHMAYGOD I LOVE GLICK SO MUCH HAHAHA)
I asked with a surprised look.
“Fool? Ains?”
Glick looked from side to side and then turned his head to me. Then he said with a murmuring voice.
[I heard it from Tyr.]
“What did you hear?”
[…I heard that he thought I was a cat.]
You thought it was a cat? Wait a minute, Ains must have…
“I picked him up.”
So he picked him up because he thought it was a cat?
But when I thought how surprised he must have been when he saw him grow up, I burst into laughter. I know that baby leopards can easily mistaken as a cat, but it’s still funny.
◆◈◆◈◆◈◆
GLICK JUST WENT UP TO MY BIAS LIST LMAO. THIS TSUN TSUN BABY IS SO HILARIOUS OH MY GOSH.
But tbh, I’m kinda confused about Ains. I think he’s really interested in Maria since he invited him to dine with him (it’s a big deal since he’s a prince after all) but it’s either he’s just bad with expressing himself or he’s just curious and confuse at Maria who’s acting all over the place hahaha.
