The Mafia’s Queen: Entangled With A Psycho - Chapter 142
Becca didn’t know what was worse; being stuck in traffic for over thirty minutes at night or the aggravating honking of frustrated drivers like her. Annoyed, she honked as well, a contest to see who had the loudest horn.
The bigger trucks won against her Lamborghini, drowning out whatever petty sound her car was making with the vociferous ones of their cars. But Becca didn’t seem to care— all she wanted at that moment was to go home and curl up in bed with Leo. So she kept honking, with hopes that by some miracle the noise she was making would debilitate the others. Surprisingly, all it did was heighten the noise to the point of causing her a migraine.
Becca let out a groan laced with utter frustration, slapping her steering wheel. Then she heard her phone ringing in her bag, veering her gaze from the sea of cars up ahead to her lit-up phone screen. She took out the phone, eyes riffing through the caller ID.
Navaya.
She picked up instantly, putting the call on speakerphone.
” Hello,” Becca said into the phone but the response she got was the background noise of wherever Navaya was at. ” Hello? Navaya?”
” Becca, do you know what I just realized?” Navaya’s voice slurred as she spoke. ” I exude big dick energy and I don’t even have a dick.”
Laughter rippled from the other line, causing Becca’s brows to scrunch.
” Wait, are you drunk?” The noise from Navaya’s location spewed louder. ” And where are you?”
Navaya hiccuped once, twice.” First of all,” She hiccuped again. ” I am not drunk.”
Becca’s face was now a blend of confusion, fear, and worry. ” Where are you? Are you alone or with someone?”
The tumult in Becca worsened when Navaya didn’t convey a response immediately.
” Navaya?”
She glanced at her phone’s screen, the call was still connected.
” Hi,” Navaya snickered as if finding something funny. The distant sound of chatter and laughter confirmed Becca’s suspicion. Wherever Navaya was, she definitely wasn’t alone. But Becca didn’t know what was scarier; having her best friend all alone over there or in the company of other drunken people.
” Gosh, Navaya. Do you know what the time is right now? Why would you go out and get drunk when it’s not safe? Didn’t you even consider all the horrible things that could possibly happen?”
Navaya grumbled. ” Hey, people like you who have their whole life figured out, don’t have the right to judge me. You are not my mother.” She then let out a sigh, her voice low. ” Please, don’t be my mother.”
Both women fell silent for a while.
” I’m not judging you, Navaya. I’m not your mother.” Becca said after the brief stillness. ” Okay, let’s do something. Tell me where you are right now and I will pick you up. Is that okay with you?”
” Okay.” Navaya paused as if trying to remember the name of the place she was at. She began staring around the club in search of something that could jog her memory and it took everything Becca had within herself not to roll her eyes. She blinked in disbelief.
How much did Navaya drink?
” Blue Diamond.” Navaya giggled, happy about her little accomplishment. ” I remember it now.”
Becca’s mouth fell open for some seconds before regaining her composure. ” Okay, just stay put. Don’t accompany any stranger. I’m on my way.”
Becca hung up, her phone still in hand as she stared ahead. There were still a lot of cars in front of hers, and even more behind.
No way to move forward or reverse. She cursed under her breath.
Blue Diamond was at least thirty minutes from where she was. She would still have to take Navaya home and if by some miracle, she managed to abscond that traffic limbo, it might be close to midnight before she gets home.
Becca sighed at the thought that would most likely become her future. While she slowly withers away in her car, she might as well call Leo to tell him she would be home a bit late.
As if on cue, the phone in her hand glowed once more, vibrating. Leo was calling, probably pacing around their bedroom in worry. She answered, not waiting for a second longer.
” Where are you?” Leo asked as soon as the call got connected, distress bleeding from his tone.
Becca bit on a smile. ” And hello to you too. I’m fine. Thanks for asking.”
Her voice held humor, something Leo lacked at that moment. She could already picture how he must look right now; in his pajama trousers, probably shirtless, hair messy from constantly running his fingers through it, holding his phone to his ear and pacing back and forth with a scowl imbued on his face. Typical Leo but somehow, Becca still got dubbed the worrywart in the relationship.
” You know what I mean. It’s late, where are you?”
” You know, just wallowing in New York City’s traffic.” She laughed. ” What about you?”
” Getting dressed to go out looking for you. I almost had a stroke just from worrying.” Leo said, releasing the breath he had been holding. The restaurant Becca had dinner at was barely forty minutes away from their house. Leo waited for her to return but after waiting for over an hour after she exited the restaurant with Regina, hell broke loose in his head.
” Take it easy, you aren’t as young as you used to be. You might hurt yourself. First was your legs, now a stroke. Next would be your back.” Becca said, more jokingly than worried.
Leo paused to register her words, lips slanting into a smile and eyes narrowing all at once. Was she making fun of his age? Becca let out a laugh, incapable of stifling it a minute longer and Leo’s suspicion was confirmed.
She was mocking him.
” Hurry back home and I will show you who is old.” He laid out the challenge, to be resolved behind closed doors, on their bed. At least that was where Becca hoped they would settle it. Leo, on the other hand, liked to get creative sometimes.
” Yeah, about that… I might be home a little late.”
” A little late?”
The car in front of Becca’s moved forward and Becca did so as well, tailing behind It as she gradually navigated out of there. ” Okay, maybe really late. Navaya got herself drunk at a bar half an hour away from me and I promised to take her home.”
Leo’s scowl resurrected instantly. ” It’s going to be past midnight by the time you get home.”
” I know. I know but she’s my best friend and I promised.” Becca said.
” Just call Johnny and tell him about it. He will pick her up.” After all, she was his business. But Leo refrained from saying that last part.
” Yeah but what if he’s asleep or busy doing whatever billionaires like you do at past ten pm. I don’t want to burden him. ”
” Burden who? Johnny?” Leo couldn’t curb his grin. ” How is telling him to pick Navaya up a burden?”
Becca didn’t seem to notice the amusement lancing Leo’s every word. ” I just hope he doesn’t mind.”
Leo cocked an amused brow, itching to ask her if she knew Johnny well or at all for that matter. He wanted to tell her how sly Johnny had been lately or how he had been six years ago but decided against it, locking his lips. He wasn’t a snitch.
” He won’t mind, even if he tried..” That’s how weak Johnny was for Navaya.
