The Meeting at the Window of the Southern Tower - Chapter 4. Tower
****
When a demon named Incubus attacked the royal castle in the middle of the night, I was in deep sleep.
I was exhausted practicing dancing all day to prepare for the ball which I was invited to by a royal family from a neighboring country.
The melody which was popular in the neighboring country had a lightness to it that made my heart flutter but when it came to dancing, it was not as light as its music.
I had trouble with my footwork and asked the master musicians to play the same part over and over again, and as a result, it haunted me even in my dreams, making me sick and tired.
That’s why when my elder sisters woke me up, I was ready for them to ask me to practice dancing.
My sisters quickly mastered the dance steps I was having a hard time with.
If only I can be just as relaxed….
When I woke up and looked around, all candlelights were lit whether it was in the large bedroom with three canopy beds or in the small bedroom with lower-legged beds for the maidservants.
All of them were staring at the door in a tense manner as if they were staring at the door of a tower.
From the other side of the room, I could occasionally hear shouting and loud noises.
Looking at their states, I know that it wasn’t the first time it happened.
However, that was the only thing I understood. As I held my breath, unable to move, the sound suddenly died down.
Considering my security, I couldn’t blame the maidservant for opening the door narrowly to look outside.
Checking the situation is the maidservant’s job.
However, the moment she opened the door inward, it suddenly opened fully and violently, and the guards who were fighting with the demons came rolling in, knocking everyone into the depths of fear.
The demon was an eerily wet, bluish-black monster, twice the size of the guards, with two arms and two upright legs. In other words, it had the shape of a human.
The face was also human-like. Even if both eyes were about to pop out of their sockets, fangs were bared from their mouths, and two large horns were sticking out of their foreheads, they still had a glimpse of humanity.
The reason I could say this thing was because I witnessed the moment when the next demon was created.
The bare shoulders of the demon suddenly surged and stretched long, dripping blue-gray mucus, and it bit into the neck of the guard who was underneath it.
Instead of screams and despair, what came was a change that could only be described as a nightmare.
The guard’s entire body immediately swelled up, turning blue-black and swelling as the armor of his chainmail was flung away.
His struggling hands became discolored. His face deformed, his forehead cracked, and their horns began to show up.
Another guard rushed in through the side of the monsters, pulled our arms, and managed to get us out of the room.
We were about to run downstairs when we were confronted by a new group of monsters, forcing us to run upstairs instead of down.
The princesses and maidservants climbed the narrow spiral stairs in a desperate manner.
The silk nightgown got caught in their feet and they nearly fell several times. The upper floor of the bedchamber led directly to the south tower, but we never imagined that we would be able to run so fast up the stairs that usually took so long to climb.
Eventually, we reached the top of the tower and locked the doors shut. There was no way we shouldn’t lock the door.
I think there were guards who helped us to escape but when we reached the top, there was no one following us.
They must have been following the back of the line to let us go, so they couldn’t make it to the top.
And when they were able to climb again, the creature was no longer a guard.
When we locked the door, we were far from being able to escape.
We were trapped in a small space and became rats in a bag. If the door was breached, everything would be over.
Everyone thought while shivering that it would be better if we just died. If only we could die with our current form and mind.
However, the unleashed spell of Incubus would not allow you to become entangled and turn into a servant of the abominable demon.
There was an even more intense sound, and the door swung widely again.
There was a horrifying sound of the spreading of the crack.
The older sister gripped her dagger stronger. And she closed her eyes as she stopped breathing.
“Wait !”
I shouted as I jumped on her hand. I couldn’t help shouting even though we were in this place.
“Please wait a bit more.”
As I grabbed the dagger from my elder sister’s hand, I ignored the cries of protest from all around the room, rolled over to the window.
Beyond a small space built into the thickness of the stone wall, there was an open window that was not made of inlaid stained glass.
If you open the double sliding armored door, you can see the outside completely.
I know there was no way to escape even if I opened it.
There was no balcony, and there was no foothold on the tower.
There was absolutely no possibility of escaping through the walls.
Still, I wanted to do something. I didn’t want to give up.
As soon as I pulled the wooden armored door toward me, the light from outside and the cold wind flowed into the room at the same time.
I leaned forward with my hands on the window and… gasped.
The morning sun was shining in the dawn sky.
Against the backdrop of fluttering clouds and overflowing light, a celestial horse with pure white wings is floating in the air.
A young man was extending across the horse, looking at me.
His brown hair was blowing in the breeze, and he was staring at me as if he were standing in a meadow.
Eventually, he moved the horse forward and stretched out his head to peek into the room.
When he saw the princesses stiffening in surprise in the brightly lit room, He said
“Oh, you were about to die.”
