The Mystic Healer - Chapter 31
After traveling through the forest for about three hours, Lance noticed just how large this island truly was. Choosing to remain hidden within the trees, Lance gave up the opportunity to potentially set up several traps where there were small waterfalls or just grassland within some areas around him.
There was no telling how long it would take him to travel to the center of the island using his top speed, so instead of initially worrying about making it to the center right away, he decided that the best option would be to try to find a demonic beast who would be weak to his sword attacks in order to train himself to breakthrough as soon as possible.
Due to all the other students representing Griffin Academy only being 2nd rank mystics, it was clear that if Lance were to become one as well, he would without a doubt, be the strongest within this group. Therefore, the first priority would be to obtain any demonic core regardless of what element it represented.
Every demonic beast was born with a core that gave them the ability to use their own innate elemental techniques. Several bloodlines could even go as far as creating their own techniques that only their future offspring could utilize that weren’t elemental based. The most widely known demonic beast that had done this were the dragons with their different colored flames.
Halting his movements, Lance quickly took out his sword from its sheath as he finally found a demonic beast close by. From the back, this demonic beast looked to be some kind of ape, and it did not look very harmful to an expert such as Lance who was a 2nd rank warrior and could heal any life threatening wounds using his mana supply.
Unfortunately, this ape looking creature was eating and had its back turned towards Lance, so he couldn’t really get a good look to identify it. There were countless demonic beasts that currently existed, but at least Lance was able to read quite a few books explaining how certain ones looked, and the ones to absolutely avoid at his current rank.
Nonetheless, Lance decided it was time for him to make a move as the demonic beast let out a small yawn and stretched out its arms as if it was about to take a long nap. In a way, it seemed that this demonic beast was in fact very ignorant, or it felt that nothing could pose a big enough threat to it.
With his eyesight locked onto it, Lance slowly creeped up on it using the trees for cover until he was close enough to finally make his move. Using his body, Lance began to execute one of his fastest moves currently available to him. As if he was falling forward, Lance used the momentum from this half fall to speed his advancement up as he poured a portion of his battle qi into his feet.
Shooting forward like an eagle about to snatch its prey, Lance felt grateful that the ape seemed to not have noticed him as he lifted his sword above his head before swinging it down with all of his strength. He knew that if he held back in the slightest, it could very well be him that would be slain here today.
“No!” still several feet away from the demonic beast, Lance noticed that he was in fact being toyed with, because flames started to emit from the ape’s body as it slightly turned its head, daring him to continue his advancement towards it. Using a quick footwork technique, Lance was able to change his charge just enough to avoid the fire balls that appeared right before him.
A small explosion sounded as the fire balls dropped down to hit the ground, causing a large amount of dust to appear and cover the area. It was clear that the ape wanted to actually play with Lance as if he was going to be its dinner. If it chose to, the demonic beast could still have changed the directions of the fireballs to eventually follow Lance until they had hit him. “So, it was your confidence in protecting yourself against any attack I would have thrown at you?” Lance said out loud towards the demonic beast as he was trying to catch his breath now. This entire scene happened in only two breaths of time, and Lance wasn’t used to using such a strong killing technique and needing to quickly adapt during a battle such as this.
What was strange, was the demonic beast clearly couldn’t respond to Lance’s provocation, and instead started pounding the ground around it to signify to him that it was ready for another round. This was enough to make Lance wonder if he should continue trying to take this ape down, or if he should count his losses and try to escape. Either scenario would still be dangerous and had its own set of risks which he would need to deal with.
As Lance pondered over what he should do, the ape seemed rather impatient and chose to begin to charge towards Lance itself as its body remained covered in a thick layer of flames. Now faced with a dangerous demonic beast rushing towards him, Lance could only use this opportunity to try to land a blow on it, because it was still unclear if there were more waiting nearby to kill him if he were to try escaping in this moment.
