- Chapter 66: Monsters in the Streets (1)
Neban and his group were talking and laughing when the barriers came down. Then, the atmosphere changed as Neban and Siren were the first to feel the ground shaking from the herd coming.
Noticing the changed behavior, everyone asked them what was wrong. But the group got their answer as screams filled their ears while the shaking ground got more vigorous.
Everyone stood up as Neban grabbed Theo to hold him. They would go to the safe room to protect themselves as it hit them: the barrier was down, and the monsters were entering.
But they did not get far from the dining area as the group heard the front door bust open. Three monsters rushed into the living area while roaring, looking around as they smelled humans.
The others, minus Neban and Siren, jumped in fright. From where they are standing, the group could see the monsters. But the things could not see them, even though they caught their scents.
Neban slowly gave Theo to Wey, kissing his son on the cheek as he whispered he would get rid of the monsters.
This time, Theo understood that his dad had to fight. His grandparents were not hunters, Isona was pregnant, and Wey and Owain did not have experience fighting monsters.
Even though Theo did not want Neban to go, his mind kept going back to when his dad was on the hospital bed, not waking up at first. He nodded anyway as he tightly held onto Wey’s shirt.
“Everyone, hurry to the room. Wey and Owain make sure to keep everyone safe.” Neban whispered to them.
The group nodded as they fast-walked out of the room. They wanted to run, but they knew it would suddenly attract the monsters’ attention.
“Siren,” Neban called as he held out his hand.
Siren turned into a sword as Neban caught it with a firm grip before walking into the living area. Once he entered, the three monsters quickly turned towards him as they let out another roar.
Neban twirled Siren, as it has been a while since he had the sword in his hand. It has been a while since he had any weapon in his hand.
He rushed forward while the monsters simultaneously did. Neban gave a wide swing, swiftly cutting the monsters’ bodies in half. The things fell to the ground as blood spattered on the couch and pooled on the floor.
‘Finally, this is what I wanted for a year. Hunting for my food and killing those monsters with you!’ Siren happily shouted.
Neban was getting ready to say something, even give Siren the fill they wanted, when two more monsters entered the home. The blood in the house attracted them to come over.
He knew that this was not good as Neban quickly used [Shadow Fire] to eliminate the bodies and the blood’s smell. Then he [Shadow Travel] out of the house and behind the monsters.
He did not need them in the house, especially when he gets ready to kill them.
The monsters turned around when they noticed that Neban disappeared. Once they saw him behind them, the things attacked. Neban moved back until they were a few feet from the house. When they were far enough, he cut them down with no problem.
After he killed them, Neban used [Shadow Web x3] on the house’s entrance since the door was gone. It will keep the monsters from entering the house for the time being.
Neban also burned the monsters near the house before turning around and taking in the chaos he blocked out.
There were monsters in the streets while people, who could not fight, were trying to run back into their homes. Hunters were out fighting, trying to push back the herd so that the Warriors could redo the barriers.
Human and monster bodies laid dead in the streets as the monsters destroyed a few buildings while forcibly entering homes.
Smoke began to fill the area as fires were getting made.
Everyone had a safe room in their homes, but it did not matter because they were already dead if they were not fast enough to reach it.
After a year of living in a false peace, this was a sad sight to see.
‘I am ready to eat.’ Siren announced, breaking his thoughts.
Neban hummed, ‘Yes, let me finally give you a buffet.’
Then, he ran into the streets, cutting down monsters while saving civilians from getting killed. Siren rejoiced at the blood they drank from the creatures and the adrenaline of the hunt.
Neban ignored how happy Siren was as he continued to cut down some monsters. But, at the same time, he could understand them. Deep down, after three years and a few months of fighting, Neban misses it a bit.
Well, he misses the strong opponents that were hard to kill.
As Neban was on his thirtieth kill, a monster jammed into him, causing him to fly into a car. He was half-way to the ground as he grabbed the car handle to keep himself upright.
The monsters ran towards him as Neban was picking himself up.
He was on his feet when the monster was close to him. Neban was getting ready to slice it down when an arrow hit the thing’s head.
When the monster hit the ground as it was dead, Neban let out a deafening sigh. Seeing the arrow, he already knew who took the kill. He did not acknowledge Angel as the man was already walking towards him.
Neban walked away as he went to look for other monsters to kill. He stumbled upon one using shockwaves to hold the hunters back. When the hunters fell to the ground, the thing opened its mouth while breathing out fire.
One of the hunters was a Warrior as a shield appeared to protect the others. Two hunters saw that it was their chance to run away because they did not want to deal with the monster.
Neban was impressed with the monster; it was the first time seeing one that looked weak but could breathe fire. He wanted to kill it, and he was not the only one thinking it.
‘Oh! I want it!’ Siren kept repeating as they sounded excited. If Neban could see them, he bet their eyes were glistening in interest and hunger.
Neban entered the battle, kicking the monster away. The thing flew back before planting its feet into the ground to stop itself.
The Warrior let down its shield when they saw Neban. “Hurry and go. I got this.” Neban told them.
The hunters did not need to hear it twice as they ran out to look for other monsters that were manageable to kill.
The monster looked at Neban with fury in its eyes as it saw the others leaving. Neban did not react to it, but he did make a hand movement like he told the thing to attack him.
He successfully provoked the monster as it quickly rushed forward, using its shockwaves.
The shockwaves did not bother Neban as he went for the monster’s head. The thing dodged the weapon, noticing that their shockwaves were not working against its prey.
It opened its mouth, blowing out fire.
Neban tapped into copying a Warrior as he put up a [Warrior Shield] to block the fire. The monster growled as it took a few steps back, closing its mouth.
Neban wondered what the monster was getting ready to do when the thing rushed forward at accelerated speed before leaping.
He moved back, trying to give more space while messing up the monster’s leap. But the thing could jump long as it collided with Neban.
They hit the ground as Neban caught his breath, kicking the monster off of him. Siren fell from his hand. But instead of landing as a weapon, they transformed back into their form as they flipped over.
Siren reached the monster, grabbing it by its head and throat. Neban moved to a sitting position as he watched the thing struggle against Siren’s hold.
But Siren was much more robust, making it impossible for the monster to escape. They smirked before ripping the thing’s head off its body.
Blood hit them and Neban, but it mostly landed on Siren. Neban wanted to complain about Siren being messy but stopped at the scene happening in front of him.
Siren put the monster’s head above them, opening their mouth as the blood from the wound spilled on their tongue. The blood dripped down Siren’s lips and chin as they drank the blood like it was a fountain.
Siren looked like they were in ecstasy while Neban had a disgusted expression.
“You could have turned back into a weapon and done that. What you are doing now is disgusting.” Neban complained as he let out a gagging sound.
Siren threw the head away, not caring for the blood on them as they used their fingers to wipe the blood on their face. They licked it off their fingers before looking back to Neban, “Stop being a baby.”
Neban rolled his eyes as he stood up. “Hurry and turn back into a weapon before anyone sees you.”
Siren huffed as they turned back into a sword. Their weapon form had a bunch of blood on it. Neban sighed but picked up the weapon anyway.
He walked away from the area and searched for his next monster to kill.
