- Chapter 67: Monsters in the Streets (2)
Neban walked through the streets, killing a few monsters along the way. He and Siren grew a bit bored at the easy kills when they saw some hunters trying to push back a monster at the borderline.
The thing was different from the rest as it was throwing out beams of lights.
Siren smiled, ‘That one is perfect.’
Neban nodded as he made his way over to the area, only for someone to drop down in front of him. He abruptly stopped, taking a few steps back, so he and the person could have space between them.
The person had light blue skin and short back hair. There was a blindfold covering the man’s eyes as he tilted his head, sniffing the air; it showed that they were blind.
The man had four arms, while each of them had sharp nails. And when the person opened their mouth, it showed regular teeth, which surprised Neban. He got used to seeing monsters with human forms having weird or sharp teeth.
The man tilted his head once more before facing Neban, “I can smell a human and a familiar sword.” Then, after he spoke those words, the monster jumped up with glee.
“Oh, oh! Is it the human with Mother’s weapon?”
‘Will that be my title from now on?’ Neban thought as monsters were always telling him this.
Siren laughed, ‘Well, it is not a lie. Except I am not Mother’s weapon anymore and never will be hers again.’
Neban did not answer. But it did not matter because the man rushed forward, instantly appearing in front of Neban. He swung his two top arms while not having a precise aim.
Neban ducked before using [Shadow Travel] to move a few feet from the man.
“Oh yes, this will be fun,” the man started as he hit the air, “I want you to offer me more.”
Neban scrunched his nose at the man’s talk as he picked his free hand up and used [Shadow Beam] a few times.
As they came out, making their way towards the monster, the man quickly moved left and right. Even though he was blind, the man dodged all the beams from Neban.
Then, he was in front of Neban once again, swinging both his top arms. Neban blocked with Siren this time, stopping the arms in their tracks.
But he did the account for the monster to have a knife appear in one of his bottom hands. The blade sliced his stomach as he moved back last minute.
Neban picked up his leg, kicking the monster back as he used [Shadow Fire], creating a border between them.
As he looked down at the wound, Neban saw that his shirt had a cut on it while there was a shallow wound on his stomach. Small drops of blood slipped from it.
The man laughed as he stepped forward, only to hiss when he touched the fire. The monster sneered as he looked around, sniffing the air. “You cannot keep me away, especially since I can finally enter this area.” The man sang before disappearing.
Once Neban looked up after he heard the man’s words, the monster was nowhere in sight. He swiftly turned around, raising Siren to stop what was getting ready to attack him from behind.
He heard the sound of something hitting the ground. Neban looked down and saw that it was a knife. He did not have time to think about the weapon when he dropped to the ground, rolling away.
Two more knives hit the ground, followed by a crazy laugh. “I enjoy this cat and mouse game.”
Hearing the man’s voice, Neban looked around the streets before turning his glances to the buildings. He was trying to spot the man. Neban would like to use absolute sense, but he noticed that the skill became useless to the monsters with human forms.
Suddenly, Neban dropped to the ground, lying on his back as he held Siren in front of him. Something pushed the weapon down, trying to put it against his neck. Neban had to strain to keep Siren from moving forward.
If anyone looked from the outside, it would seem weird. Because even though there was a weight on Neban, trying to push Siren towards his neck, it was invisible. So, it looked like Neban was fighting with himself.
In his invisible form, the monster sat on top of Neban, bending forward as it used its four arms to push the weapon down.
Neban struggled as the monster was more robust than him. His arms were getting sore as they were starting to fall. He could feel Siren getting close to his throat.
‘I could change my form right now.’ Siren said.
‘No need. I have the man right where I want him.’ Neban replied as he switched to copying a Mage. A liquid was starting to form in his mouth.
“Any last words, human?” The monster asked as it thought about killing the human with Mother’s sword. It seemed to be the best death to get killed by the weapon he has been using.
Neban smiled before thinking [Nerve Poison]. He quickly spat the poison in the man’s face before canceling it.
Poison does not affect Mages, but Neban did not want any to stay in his mouth for too long since his Mage is a copy.
The monster screamed, trying to grab his face as he fell to the ground. His body was visible again as he laid on the street. The man could not move his body.
Neban stood up, walking towards the paralyzed monster as he looked at it. The man’s mouth twitched like he was trying to say something.
Lifting Siren, Neban did not give the monster time to recover as he stabbed the weapon in the man’s throat.
The monster couldn’t open his mouth to cough up the blood as the nerve poison kept it shut. Life left the man as a small line of blood seeped through the corner of his mouth.
He kept the sword in the monster’s throat as he let Siren suck it dry. Once they finished, Neban pulled the weapon out before turning towards their actual destination.
They walked to the borderline where the monster was. ‘I wonder if that was the one that caused the barrier to come down?’ Neban thought to Siren.
‘Probably. But, who cares? I want its blood.’ Siren replied.
Neban rolled his eyes at Siren’s bloodthirsty response as he stopped near the borderline or the city’s entrance.
Some hunters had deep wounds as they kept trying to hold the monster back while the remaining were lying dead on the ground.
The monster opened its mouth, letting out a mighty roar, causing the hunters to drop to their knees. Then it bent forward as a beam of light started to form.
Neban used [Shadow Travel] to appear in front of the hunters and the blast’s direction. The hunters gave a start at his appearance but could not get up as they were exhausted.
He ignored them as the monster released its beam. Neban copied a Warrior’s shield as he sliced his weapon down, cutting the beam in half.
Since the beam did not have its original power due to its splitting, the light died out while it disappeared.
The monster growled as the beam did not get anyone, while the hunters were grateful for Neban saving them. The hunters were going to say something, but Neban quickly cut them off.
“Get from this area and find some healing potions to help your wounds. And if you can fight, go deal with the monsters still in the streets.” Neban told them.
“But-” one of them tried to speak, only to cut themselves off when the monster leaped towards Neban.
Neban held the leaping monster back with Siren as he moved a few feet backward. “Go!” He yelled at the hunters, not looking back at them, trying to keep the thing from moving.
The hunters quickly stood up as they ran away. A few of them stumbled, almost hitting the ground, but they kept going.
Once the hunters were not near the area anymore, Neban leaned back, putting his weapon down as he used [Shadow Web].
The monster hit the web, only to stop as its horns got stuck.
What Neban did was a close call since he and the monster were on each other. But, it worked as the thing was trying to pull its horns out of the web.
Neban was getting ready to cut the monster’s horns when another beam started to form. It was quick and almost hit him. But Neban jumped to the other side, getting out of the blast’s way.
Once the beam ended, the web disappeared as the monster was free. It shook its head before turning towards Neban.
Using [Shadow Travel], Neban moved far from the monster before it could attack him. ‘Siren, turn into a bow.’ He told them.
The sword transformed into a bow as Neban pointed towards the monster, pulling the string back.
The monster locked on his new position, bending forward before quickly rushing towards him. Neban swiftly let the string go as three arrows soared through the air.
