“I will count on you then, Dr. Dunn. Meanwhile, I will arrange a post for your wife,” said the man in the suit dullly.
It was a deal.
It was a blatant case of corruption and abuse of power.
Dr. Dunn exchanged a knowing glance with Buck Thompson and guffawed. “As you know, Mr. Thompson, Saltband Medical Center is running out of bed. I know the background of this patient. She could not possibly come up with one million dollars. Since she is dying anyway, I can just ask her to leave and nothing will happen.”
While speaking, Dr. Dunn yelled at the nurses there. “Make it quick!”
After several nurses unplugged the oxygen tube, the old lady coughed violently, pleading to the nurses. “P-P-Please w-w–wait. I-I-I am short of breath…”
But those nurses ignored her as they dragged her out of bed. One nurse’s hand slipped and nearly caused the old lady to fall to the ground.
When Dr. Dunn saw that clumsy nurse, he yelled at her. “Stupid! Why worry so much? She is going to die anyway.”
While speaking, he took two steps forward and grabbed the old lady’s hair, wanting to drag her away by force.
Just then, hurried footsteps came outside the door as Carmen and Ryan arrived. Carmen blurted out when she saw what happened, “What are you all doing? Let go of my grandma!”
She rushed forward and raised her hand, wanting to slap Dr. Dunn in his face.
But she was just a woman. Dr. Dunn easily stopped her by grabbing her wrist. “Hmph! How dare you want to hit me? Do you know who I am?”
She tried to shake off his hand but to no avail. Dr. Dunn’s hand still gripped tightly in her grandma’s hair.
Ryan, who came in with Carmen, saw what happened and instantly became furious.
‘D*mn you!’
He came in front of Dr. Dunn in a flash.
Smack!
With no hesitation, he slapped Dr. Dunn with the back of his hand. The slap was so hard that blood, along with a few broken teeth, instantly spurted out of his mouth. Dr. Dunn staggered and crashed into the wall with a loud thud.
Ryan caught Carmen’s grandma from the demented nurse’s hands, helped her get back on the bed, and put the oxygen tube back on. “Grandma, it is all right now.”
His face looked grave upon seeing those nurses who were still standing there. “Get out!”
Several nurses trembled all over and retreated a few steps to the doorway upon seeing Ryan’s fearsomeness.
Even Carmen, who was standing at the bedside, was a bit in shock.
She had known Ryan for five or six years. The Ryan she knew had always been gentle. She could not believe that he had such a violent temper.
“Who the hell are you? How dare you hit me? Sussie, inform the security department and kick him out of here!” Dr. Dunn hurled angrily at a nurse before glaring back at Ryan. “You are finished, kid! This bed is for Mr. Thompson’s mother. How dare you offend him? You must have a death wish!”
Dr. Dunn was a wimp. The slap from Ryan just now had frightened him. Judging from the force of the slap, he knew Ryan was anyone but ordinary. So he immediately dragged Buck Thompson down with him in the first instance.
Buck shot a disdainful glance at Ryan. “I will give you a chance, kid. Bring this old woman and leave. Or else, I will make you regret it.”
Ryan did not give a damn to Buck. Instead, he looked at Carmen with a gentle expression. “You go notify the attending doctor and ask him to prepare for the surgery.”
Carmen was holding her grandma’s wrist by the bed, looking disheartened. “But, Ryan, the surgery costs one million dollars. I don’t have it right now. The mortgage of the house can only be done tomorrow at the earliest. Besides, grandma’s attending doctor is him, Dr. Dunn.”
“This scum?” He frowned and paused for a while, then continued, “You don’t have to worry about money, but this doctor…”
‘This scum will perform surgery on Grandma?’
It worried Ryan. Just when he was hesitating if he should call Archer, Dr. Dunn started to speak contemptuously.
“Hmph! Stop pretending here if you have no money. Do you think the hospital is a charity? Can a guy working in a bar get a million dollars? Get out, and don’t waste my time—” While Dr. Dunn spoke, Ryan shot him an intimidating glare, and he instantly shut up.
Ryan tossed the garbage bag in front of Dr. Dunn. “One million dollars? I tell you what, I don’t lack money. But you don’t deserve to be a doctor because of your character.”
Dr. Dunn and Buck exchanged a glance, ridicule filling their eyes. “Kid, so you are a scavenger, aren’t you? A bag of mineral water bottles is worth a million dollars?” Buck sneered.
After a while of mockery, Buck glared at Ryan with a vicious look in his eyes. “Do you know who Preston Parker is, kid? He is one of the two overlords in Saltband City, and I am the manager of Parker Group with a thousand people working under me. I can make you disappear instantly if you make me a little unhappy. Now, get the hell out of my sight!”
‘So he is Preston Parker’s man?’
“So you are the manager of Parker Group, eh? Very well.” Ryan paused as he turned to look at Dr. Dunn. “Tell your hospital director to see me. I will not pay a single short for the surgery. But you must not the surgeon of this operation.”
When Carmen saw Ryan’s arrogance, she could not help but pull him over. “Ryan…”
‘This Ryan is acting as if he was somebody. Could the garbage bag really contain a million dollars?’
Everyone else in the room thought the same way.
Buck burst into laughter. “Did you hear that, Dr. Dunn? This garbage bag of mineral water bottles is worth a million dollars. Would you like to open and check it out yourself, Dr. Dunn? If there is one million dollars inside that garbage bag, I will learn to bark like a dog and crawl out of here.”
While speaking, he kicked the garbage bag.
As the garbage bag slid up to and burst open in front of Dr. Dunn.
Stacks of hundred-dollar bills fell out of the broken garbage bag. All the bills were spanking-new. They could almost smell the newly dried ink on the bills.
Buck and Dr. Dunn were wide-eyed, their eyeballs nearly popping out of their sockets.
‘What the heck?’
‘There is really million-dollar cash inside the garbage bag?’
‘What is in the head of this scoundrel?’
‘Who would carry so much cash these years? Not only that, he carries that money in a trash bag. Can he get any more casual than this?’
