Ryan glanced past Buck and cocked an eyebrow.
Buck’s back was facing the door. He did not know that Preston was staring at him with a grave expression. Preston was about to storm in with his bodyguards when he heard what Buck said. But Ryan stopped him.
“Oh, Mr. Thompson. Tell me, what are the consequences of offending your boss?” There was no emotion in Ryan’s voice. He was curious to see what Buck would do.
Buck preened when he saw Ryan’s response. “So you are scared now, eh? Kid, I tell you what, if you irritate my boss, he can immediately close the bar where you all work at, leaving you out of work, and banning you from getting any job in Saltband City. But that is still a mild one. You may meet with a car accident and die tomorrow, and your family may vanish. Now I am giving you a chance: kneel down, apologize to me, and admitt your mistakes. Maybe it’s still not too late.”
Buck kept talking and did not notice the expression on Dr. Dunn’s face. Dr. Dunn saw Preston Parker standing behind Buck and was sweating profusely. He kept winking at Buck.
But Buck completely ignored him and kept on talking.
“You moron!” As well-cultured as Preston was, he could not hold back his anger. He stepped forward without saying a word and kicked Buck’s butt, sending him falling face down on the floor.
Buck was too excited and did not expect anyone would dare to kick him. “D*mn it! Whoever the hell kicked me? I—”
When he turned around and before he could finish his sentence, he saw it was Preston behind him. He shuddered in shock. “M-M-Mr. Parker. Why are you here? I was teaching this ignorant kid a lesson on your behalf. He challenged your authority.”
Buck, the retard, had not figured out the situation yet and still carried on talking.
Preston almost went mad. “Somebody, slap him!”
“Yes, boss!” Two burly bodyguards came forward in a flash as soon as Preston’s voice trailed off. They grabbed Buck’s arms, each on one side, and slapped him in the mouth.
They slapped Buck hard—so much so that his face became swollen in the blink of an eye. Blood flowed from the corner of his mouth, and broken teeth fell to the floor.
Buck did not know what was going on. “Boss, why are you hitting me? I have done nothing wrong…”
Preston rolled his eyes at him and then hurried up to Ryan with utmost respect. “My man is ignorant. I apologize, Mr. Fletcher.”
At first, he wanted to take a subservient attitude. But Ryan had instructed him before that he must not reveal his identity in public. So Preston could only adopt this attitude.
But Preston was still a bundle of nerves. Ryan was the direct descendant of the Fletcher family, the heir to the strongest clan on earth. Let alone him, even a big shot like Archer Morton was subservient to Ryan. In front of Ryan, he was less than nobody.
Now his man was behaving presumptuously in front of Ryan. it could land him in trouble.
Carmen’s grandma had been hospitalized here for a while, but she had never met Dr. Manning.
Saltband Medical Center was one of the top three hospitals in the country, with first-class medical service standards. As the director of the hospital, Dr. Manning was not someone whom any Tom, Dick, and Harry could meet at will.
But now not only the hospital director but also all the senior staff of the hospital had come. It seemed that they were all coming for Ryan, and they were respectful of him. What was going on?
But this was not all.
Preston Parker, one of the two overlords of Saltband City, was also present, and he was so polite to Ryan.
It baffled Carmen.
‘Was Ryan not an orphan? How did he get to know so many fat cats?’
Preston’s attitude was completely within Ryan’s expectation. “It is all right, Mr. Parker. You are managing such a massive business empire, the existence of a couple of rotten apples is totally understandable. Just getting rid of the rotten ones will do. Besides, I’m still working in the bar that you own. This lady is Carmen Benneth, the general manager of Royal Bar.”
He shifted the conversation to another subject—Carmen.
It was a hint that no one else but Preston understood. Ryan considered his case about Buck closed. He would not blame Preston for it. But that did not mean that Buck could escape the punishment.
Preston secretly wiped the sweat from the palm of his hand on his pants. He then smiled and held out a hand to Carmen. “I am counting on you to take care of Royal Bar, Miss Benneth. I have just learned from Mr. Fletcher that your grandma is hospitalized here. I apologize for my staff’s ignorance and the trouble caused.”
Carmen shook hands with Preston with trepidation and quickly shook her head. “It’s okay, it’s okay. There is no need for an apology, Mr. Parker.”
As the general manager of Royal Bar, Carmen had met enough people. But she had not met someone like Preston Parker. So she sounded a little nervous.
Preston nodded.
“Don’t worry, Miss Benneth. The company will reimburse you for all your grandma’s hospitalization expenses. I will ask Dr. Manning to arrange an expert consultation team and let the best doctor perform the operation. Is it OK, Dr. Manning?” While speaking, he looked over at Dr. Manning next to him.
Preston had known all along that Ryan was working at Royal Bar. It spoke volumes about the problem when Ryan called him and talked about Carmen today.
It seemed like the relationship between Carmen and Ryan was anything but ordinary.
Buck, the fool, had gotten himself into trouble in the first place. Preston would not want to miss this opportunity to please Ryan. It was not like there were many opportunities to do so. So it was natural to start with people around Ryan.
Dr. Manning nodded quickly. “No problem, no problem. I will gather an expert consultation team right away. Carl, inform all the specialists in the hospital for a meeting in five minutes.”
After that, Preston looked at Ryan, and then glanced over at Dr. Dunn and Buck for two seconds. What Preston meant was apparent: he was not sure how he should deal with these two people and was looking for him for instruction.
To be honest, Ryan could make these two vanish with just a word, with no difficulty.
Ryan frowned. Before he could speak, Dr. Dunn’s keen eyes had figured it out; Ryan was the key to everything today.
Preston was trying hard to suppress his emotions and seemed to avoid exposing his attitude toward Ryan. But Dr. Dunn could still see that Preston was afraid of Ryan. That was right; it was fear and panic.
When even Preston was afraid of Ryan, he knew how much trouble he was in now.
With this thought in mind, Dr. Dunn dropped to his knees in front of Ryan with no hesitation. “I was wrong, Mr. Fletcher. My ignorance blinded me. Please spare me… Woof, woof, woof…”
Buck had also come to his senses. He immediately broke himself free from the two bodyguards and went down on all fours, starting to bark, “Woof, woof, woof!”
Everyone in the ward looked on with astonishment. They tried very hard not to laugh.
