“What’s the matter? Why are so many people gathering here? Disperse! Disperse!” Simon frowned and walked over here quickly.
When Kenneth saw Simon, he quickly waved at him. “Mr. Hodge, it’s been a long time. It’s me. I met an old classmate here and am giving him some business.”
The company of Kenneth’s father was relatively well-established in Saltband City. So, Kenneth had an opportunity to meet and have dinner with Simon. So they were acquaintances.
Next to him, a security guard was whispering into Simon’s ear.
Simon nodded at Kenneth. “It is you, Mr. Biden Jr. We have a VIP here in Hotel Imperial, please don’t go overboard.” He paused for a second, then turned to Ryan, who was standing next to him. “You, go to polish Mr. Biden Jr.’s shoes in the corner. Customer is king, you know?”
The security guard told Simon that Ryan was a shoe polisher.
Archer had reserved the entire 18th floor to receive a VIP tonight. Simon was under pressure. He could not afford to let Ryan and Kenneth cause trouble here tonight.
With Simon’s support, Kenneth became even more brazen. “Did you hear that, Ryan? Come polish my shoes. Otherwise, get the hell out of here!”
On the other side, Archer slapped Simon in the face fiercely as soon as Simon finished talking!
Smack!
“How dare you—” Archer remembered Ryan said that he wanted to keep a low profile. “How dare you hit Mr. Fletcher? Don’t you know he is my distinguished guest?”
Archer quickly came up to Ryan. “Mr. Fletcher, are you alright?”
Ryan let out a smile. “I am fine. Just that these flies are annoying me.”
…
It struck Simon dumb even more at seeing what happened.
‘My goodness!’
‘Did Archer Morton reserve the entire 18th floor and the President Suite just for this chap? He is the VIP tonight?’
Archer Morton was the man at the helm of Morton Corporation, the influential corporation in Saltband City. Kenneth had never met him in person, but he had seen Archer many times on TV.
By the looks of Archer’s attitude, Ryan was the important guest of his today.
Ryan had mentioned earlier that he was supposed to meet someone here. Could that someone be Archer?
In fact, Kenneth did not even know that all the bigshots in the entire Southwest had secretly come to gather in the Presidential Suite upstairs today.
Kenneth might not know, but not Simon.
Any character in the Presidential Suite could effortlessly shut down Hotel Imperial.
Yet Simon asked the VIP—that these people were going to receive—to polish Kenneth’s shoes.
He must have a death wish.
“I was wrong, Mr. Morton. I was wrong, Mr. Fletcher. I didn’t know that you are the VIP Mr. Morton invites.” Simon kept slapping himself left and right in the face in front of everyone in the hotel lobby. This was not the time to talk about dignity.
Kenneth and Lucy looked at Ryan with awkward expressions on their faces. They did not know if they should leave or stay right now.
Kenneth knew that with Archer’s backing, Ryan could ruin his life easily. He was regretting it. It was this hussy’s fault. If it weren’t for her, he would not have been in such a predicament.
So he had secretly decided that if Ryan wanted to pursue the matter, he would blame it all on Lucy.
Ryan looked on with a calm expression as Simon was slapping himself in the face. It was not until a while later that Ryan held up his hand. “Relax, Mr. Hodge. You must have made a mistake. I am not a VIP, but just someone knows a thing or two about paintings. Mr. Morton invites me for an exchange of knowledge and experience. That’s all.”
Archer was a foxy character. When he heard what Ryan said, he immediately got the hint and played along. “Yeah, I heard that Mr. Fletcher is a dab hand at painting. So my friends and I would like to get to know him more. It is about time, Mr. Fletcher. Shall we go upstairs now?”
“Sure.” Ryan let out a wicked smile as he glanced at Simon, Kenneth, and others.
Simon’s hand froze in the air, and it took him a long while before he could come to his senses.
‘What the heck? He is not a VIP but just going upstairs to talk about paintings?’
Simon felt so awful, as if he had slept with a husky all night.
‘Damn it! That means I have slapped myself for nothing?’
His gut feeling had told him that something was wrong. However, Archer had admitted that he was meeting Ryan just to talk about paintings. So that rascal had fooled him.
Kenneth and Lucy secretly breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that they had figured out the truth. “Hell. At first, I thought Ryan was some VIP. It turns out that he is just a freaking street artist. I would be interested to know how long he could remain smug.”
Lucy patted herself on the chest. “It scared the hell out of me just now.”
Seeing Simon’s swollen face, Kenneth quickly went up to him and asked with concern, “Are you OK, Mr. Hodge?”
“Get the hell out of my sight!” With anger burning inside him, Simon flew off the handle, giving Kenneth a good kick in his stomach.
If it weren’t for Kenneth the hoodoo, he would not have been so humiliated in front of so many people.
Kenneth nearly stumbled to the ground. But he was not angry at Simon for kicking him. “Mr. Hodge, I am sorry. I will leave now.”
As Kenneth left, Simon put his hand to his swollen face and called out Kenneth. “By the way, do you know, Mr. Fletcher? Who is he?”
Kenneth stopped in his tracks and turned around. “Of course, I know him. We were college mates. As far as I know, he is an orphan, married to the daughter of the Mears family, and staying with his wife’s family. He is a real loser. It will not be long before they divorce.”
“Oh, really?” A hint of ruthlessness flashed in Simon’s eyes. At first, he thought Ryan was someone with a background. It turned out that he was just an orphan, a nobody.
‘Hmph!’
‘How dare you humiliate me? I will make you regret what you did to me later.’
“Kenneth, I am sorry for just now. I lost control of myself because I was too angry. Please enjoy yourself here tonight. I will give you a forty percent discount on the bill for you tonight as a small token of apology.” Simon had quickly changed his tone from anger to warmth as he wrapped his arm around Kenneth’s shoulder.
“Oh, is this for real, Mr. Hodge? You are so nice. Thank you.” Kenneth was flattered.
…
On the 18th floor.
Archer brought Ryan out of the elevator. When there was no one around, he finally spoke. “Mr. Fletcher Jr., you shouldn’t have kept quiet just now. Those people have just insulted you. I will make them vanish from Saltband City as soon as you say so.”
“Mr. Morton, they are just irritating flies. They are not worth our time.”
“You are right, Mr. Fletcher Jr. This way, please. The principals of the Southwest Contingent and the heads of the major families have all arrived,” Archer said with respect.
“Okay. But before this, please give me a moment. I have to take a leak.”
