Life or Death

I felt as if I had just woken up from a fever dream.

What was I doing a few moments before?

My heart had started beating faster and stronger every passing second. I had the illusion I was going to burst into flames from how hot my body became.

Right now? I don’t feel anything particularly different from normal.

Did I get sick just now? I hope not. My chance of survival was already low as it is without me getting sick on top of it.

Was it my imagination? I thought I had been talking to someone about something very important

I shook my head.

That is not important right now. I’m just confusing myself now. I need to focus. Focus!

As if to throw away all of my inhibitions, I momentarily closed my eyes to calm down.

The instant I had closed my eyes, a peculiar sensation rose from inside of me.

This feeling I recognize this feeling.

The unique feeling I get from synchronizing with the knowledge and the power of a new Skill I had just got for the first time.

The only reason why I would ever get this feeling can only mean one thing I have bought a Skill from the Skill Store! And it is without my knowledge.

When did this happen? How come I have no memory of this? I was sure I never bought a Skill just a few moments ago. And it’s even two of them!

While still confused, the synchronization of the new Skills had not stopped even once.

This is.!? Battle Skills!? When did my System have any Battle Skills? A Support-Type learning Battle Skills I never heard of such a thing!

But these Skills. this is amazing to think there are Battle Skills like these that exist.

If it is with these Skillsisn’t it possible to survive this predicament?

What had been only a fragile ray of light peaking from a stormy sky is now showing signs of clearing up.

This can work! This can totally work.

Kate had shown it to me. Even at our level, as long as we hold nothing back even we can fight back against the Milezs with our Skills.

I’m going to do it. This a life or death situation. There is no going back in the first place.

“Kate! Wait for a second.”

“Dan? What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you have second thoughts about me being here? It’s a waste of time to tell me otherwise.”

“That’s not it. Rather, I need you to help me.”

“Help? You have something, don’t you?”

“There is no more time so I can’t tell you what it is. I can only hope you would trust me on this.”

“… Dan, I feel insulted that you believed in me so little. No matter what your plan is, I’ll do my best to support you.”

“So what should I do?”

With Kate’s unwavering support in me, the confidence I have with my plan is now through the roof.

For my plan to work, I had only a small chance if I do it alone. But if I get Kate’s cooperation the success rate of my plan will nearly double, no triple!

If I win my gamble, I will have defeated not one but two Invaders. Even if I fail to do so, I will have successfully created enough time so that the OERF can finally get here to rescue us. Either way, it is a pathway to survival.

With a strong response, Kate immediately stepped forward to meet the Milezs head-on.

“Hey! Ya Fatties! You want some of this!? Then come and get it!”

Against the Milezs, Kate immediately raised her voice and attracted both of them to her direction.

‘Fatties’? Well, they are certainly big

Anyways, if I got time to critique Kate’s choice of words, I got time to do my part of the plan.

“Oi! Can’t have you forget about me! Get over here!”

Having got the attention of both Milezs, I was easily able to circle behind the Milezs as Kate continues to distract them. Once I did, I immediately raised my voice to attract them as well.

Hearing my shout, the Milez closest to me immediately stopped chasing after Kate and began to turn around slowly to face me.

The other Milez ignored me as it continued to chase after Kate who shouted first. That is how both Kate and I were successful in separating the two Milezs from each other.

For me to have any real success with using my new Skills, it is required that I can get into a one-on-one situation with a Milez. I never used these Skills before so it would be unwise for me to try it on two of them at once.

I couldn’t help but feel guilty for having Kate, who was still exhausted, act a decoy. However, the moment I successfully pulled the attention of one Milez I discovered something critical.

These Milezs while they are fast in a straight line their ability to turn direction is abysmally slow.As long as Kate never runs in a straight line, she should be able to run circles around the Milez relatively easily.

Kate seemed to also realize this truth. Zig-zagging all over the place, Kate runs around roads while successfully dodging the Milez’s every move.

If it’s like this, I can leave Kate on her own for the time being and focus at the task at hand. But it’s better to finish this quickly. Kate’s stamina won’t last forever.

Oh-ho, it’s coming. It’s coming!

Reading its thoughts to know its every move while discovering it’s ‘sensitivity areas’ to know it’s weakness there no better move than this,

Different from when I use this Skill on human targets, the thought process of the Milez no matter how long I ‘read’ it I can’t understand a thing.

It is as if I was trying to listen to a T.V. program, but the language it’s in is not one I understand.

Is this what all ‘Invaders’ sound like?

The only I could understand is it’s unending hunger for me while everything else is only nonsense.

But as long as I can understand that its focus is on me, I don’t need anything else.

More importantly, the thing I need to focus on the most is something else.

As expected, I don’t see anything at first glance.

If I hadn’t been tuned to its thoughts, I would’ve thought [Senstivity Vision (H)] came out a dud.

Almost nothing. Pink lights? Red light? What’s that? Something delicious?

No matter how much I look at the Milez’s body, I am unable to even pin down a single good ‘sensitivity area’.

With its armor-like exoskeleton, that much is to be expected.

However, this only tells me one thing. This creature holds not a single place that could be called a ‘weakness’.

To me, this only spells bad news.

Can I really beat it? This being that is akin to a mini moving fortress?

No, it’s not, ‘Can I do it?’

It is, ‘I have to do it.’

And for to do that it’s time to bring out the big guns.

I can see it! What I had been unable to see before now appears clear to me.

Red, pink, dark red, light pink.

Lit with a variety of shades of red all over, it was if the Milez had become decorated with red Christmas lights.

Not only were these streaks of light cover all over the surface of the Milez, as though imitating the complexity of blood vessels within the body, red/pink light spreads and branches out from side the Milez.

Are you saying, all of this I am seeing here is the Miliz ‘sensitivity areas’? All of this?

Within those streaks of red, spots the color of the darkest night sky spear in various places all over the Milez.

There is no mistake everyone of those black lights represents a weakness of the Milez.

“Unbelievable”

Had ‘Invaders’ always looked as ‘weak’ as this? What at first I thought as an ‘invincible being’ has no turned in my eyes a giant walking target.

The tough exoskeleton that it has. Used to protect its entire body. The moment I first began to use my new Skill, I understood.

‘What is with its paper-like defense?’

With enough force, it’s entire exoskeleton can break entirely off like glass. That is the type of peculiarity it has. Once it does, only a soft inner body is left for the taking.

Why the Milez is placed within the ranks of the weakest Pawn-Class… I think I understand now.

Well, the amount of force necessary for anyone to do that is beyond a normal person regardless. Even I still can’t do that.

However, with Kyushojitsu, I don’t have to.

As long as I use points, I can send an energy wave that can easily pass through any obstacle to get to my goal.

Even now, I feel as if something is being used inside of me the longer I keep looking at the Milez with my new ‘vision’. The sensation is exactly what I had felt when I used [Healing Touch (H)] (ACTIVE) for the first time. The sensation of using points.

With a single thought, I brought up my Systems Window in front of me.

I can see that the points I have ‘painstakingly’ gained is now decreasing at an alarming rate.

If I don’t finish this battle the points that I have now will be gone before I know it.

With a terrifying lunge, the Milez launched itself towards me with a giant leap.

Reading its trajectory, I immediately moved myself out of the way.

Seconds later, another huge crater appeared from where I had stood seconds before.

Reminded myself once again of my current predicament, I set my gaze back to the Milez.

“That was close. But thanks for reminding me. I got a present for you to express my gratitude.”

Point should not be wasted. Taking the chance where the Milez is still recovering from its jump, I immediately charged striking distance of it.

Standing in a position underneath the Milez, I braced my feet onto the ground as I threw out my strongest palm strike with all of my might into its underside.

From the palm of my hand, a wave of pure energy was sent out to hit a ‘black spot’ found directly between one of its body and leg joints.

“!? SKREE!!!”

Having lost all sensation to one of its left appendages, unable to hold its full weight, the Milez began to tilt onto on side. Sensing it happening, I immediately retreated out of harm’s way.

With a giant ‘thud’, the now unbalanced Milez remains clawing on the ground, trying to move its giant body again with difficulty.

Success!!

The small victory I had obtained from the Milez became the biggest turning point for me.

With just one strike I was able to render the Milez almost unable to move. Its exoskeleton was nothing but decoration as it did nothing to stop me.

To know about it was one thing. But to see it in action is another.

If it’s like this, I know what to do next.

Forcefully calming myself down, I quickly made myself towards the still flailing Milez.

With certainty, I sent all of my attacks into each and every one of its body-leg joints. Having all of its appendages become useless, the Milez has now become a sitting duck.

Its previously ear-piercing cries now become weaker and weaker.

Facing my previous ‘target of fear’, I gazed upon it sad state while experiencing a peculiar feeling.

“… This is my final tribute to you.”

With my right hand raised, I placed my palms directly between its two compound eyes.

I could feel the Milez’s raw emotions pass through me. What had been an incomprehensible mess, now became clear as day.

I couldn’t help myself feel sorry for the creature that had appeared so strong to appear so weak now before me.

However, my mind is set.
