Looking at the tombstone, Yan Yiren gazed at Xiao Xinyue’s serious expression as tears welled up in her eyes.
Choking up, she felt she couldn’t breathe properly.
“Mother, I have so much to tell you, but I don’t know where to start…”
Yan Yiren caressed that icy photo. “I remember that you didn’t like listening to me chatter on and on when I was young. You wouldn’t want to listen to my chatter now either, would you? But I still want to tell you. I’m doing very well, so please don’t worry about me…”
Yan Yiren leaned on the tombstone, talking about whatever came to mind, which unsurprisingly, was just about her daily life.
Silence loomed over the cemetery that occupied the entire hilltop.
And in the wind, bits, and pieces of Yan Yiren’s conversation with her mother, muffled by the wind, could be faintly heard.
The rain grew heavier, so heavy that Yan Yiren struggled to keep her eyes open. She knew it was time to go.
“Mother, I’ll visit you again.” Facing the tombstone, she gave a deep bow, before staggering down the hill.
Meow!
Her feet stumbled, and a shrill meow resonated in the rain-drenched air.
Yan Yiren looked down. It was a Ragdoll. Her limbs and stomach were white as snow, and her tail was black. Her tiny ears and cheeks were a light gray. With azure eyes, she stood with her tail raised high, standing proud like a queen.
She didn’t know if it was because the cat got wet in the rain or because she had accidentally stepped on her. Whatever the reason, the cat stood with her fur bristled!
“Where did this cat come from?” Yan Yiren felt a little giddy, likely because she had been standing in the rain for such a long time.
This cat wasn’t to be trifled with. Pushing her aside with her leg, Yan Yiren made her way down the hill.
Behind her, the cat that was pushed aside rolled around the ground, dirt getting all over. She let out a shrill cry, Meow…Meow…
She had no time to bother with the cat. Yan Yiren wanted to get back to her apartment as soon as possible, to take a hot bath, and to get some rest.
“Phoebe? Phoebe?!” An anxious voice called out helplessly from a faraway corner of the cemetery.
At the forefront was a girl running anxiously, followed by a group of bodyguards chasing after her. “Miss, please slow down! We’ll find Phoebe, so please stop!”
Dirt covered her from head to toe as if the girl had been rolling around the ground. Her face went slack as she kept mumbling something.
At the sound of a cat’s mew, she rushed over rapidly. Spotting the bristling cat, she immediately picked her up. As if unable to tell that the kitty was filthy, she stuck her face against the cat’s fur, nuzzling her softly, “Phoebe, Phoebe, you’re back…”
Meow! Meow!
“Phoebe, what happened to you?” The girl hugged her even tighter as if scared that she’d run away again.
The bodyguards finally caught up with the girl. With a glance at Phoebe’s outstretched paw, a bodyguard said, “Miss, Phoebe hurt her paw.”
“Phoebe, Phoebe, you’ve finally come back to play with me…” As if unable to hear anything, the girl chuckled.
The bodyguard spotted a footprint on Phoebe’s paw. Seeing how the footprint was stained with blood, something was amiss. Someone stepped on her on purpose!
“There’s a woman ahead!” The bodyguard pointed at Yan Yiren, who was almost at the foot of the hill.
The head bodyguard immediately gave his orders, “Someone, grab her!”
After giving the orders, the head bodyguard called his Young Master nervously. “Young Master, your kitty Phoebe was stepped on by someone on purpose here at the cemetery. We’ve already caught the suspect. How would you like to handle this matter?”
“Phoebe was stepped on?” The man’s deep and raspy voice sounded on the other end, his voice somber.
The bodyguard trembled. “Yes,” he said.
“Bring her over.”
Yan Yiren heard footsteps behind her. Before turning back, she felt a sharp pain in her neck. And then suddenly everything turned black.
