The Star In The Midnight Rain - Chapter 23 Trust Was Too Much
The next morning I was woken up by Hae-Jin.
“Wake up,” He said while knocking on my door.
“5 more minutes,” I said.
I was about to fall asleep when my phone rang. I picked it up.
“Hello?” I said in a sleepy voice.
“You’re late,” said Kassy.
“Hurry.”
I jumped out of bed and ran to the shower. I quickly dried my hair and put on my clothes. When I got out I didn’t see Hae-Jin. I saw his note which read “Pick me up at work today, I hope you’re not late.”
I grinned at the note in anger and ran out the door. I quickly drove to work. When I got there, everyone looked at me.
“I am sorry,” I said while huffing.
They went back to work. After investigating a case, we got back to the police station.
“There is someone waiting for you,” said Byung-Hun.
I nodded and thanked him. When I got to the lounge, I saw a woman.
She waved at me and I smiled at her. I came and sat in front of her.
“Hi sweetie, remember me?” She said.
“Not really,” I said.
“Well it has been a long time, I am Hae-Jin’s mom,” She said.
“Ah nice to meet you,” I said while shaking her hand.
We talked and she told me a lot about my parents and my younger self. I wasn’t sure about anything so I just smiled at her while nodding. After an hour, Kassy called me.
“Well it was nice meeting you miss,” I said.
I got up and was about to leave when she held my hand and said “Marry my son.”
“Excuse me?” I said.
“It will just be a contract marriage,” She said.
“I will think about it,” I said and left.
After I left, I felt comfortable. “There is something wrong with her,” I thought to myself.
My work ended at 1:30 am. I rushed to pick up Hae-Jin.
When I pulled up at his work. He wasn’t done yet so I waited for him. After a while, he walked out and I saw him. When he walked out I looked at him with affection. He looked so different from others. I kept looking at him until he opened the door for my car.
“Hi,” I said.
He smiled and said “Hi.”
“Let’s have Chinese for dinner?” I said and he nodded.
I was about to reach out to the cord when he did the same so we were holding each other’s hand. I looked at him and apologized while handing him the cord.
We arrived at the restaurant. We talked while eating. I told him about his mom.
“I am sorry, I hope it didn’t affect your work,” He said.
“Not at all,” I said.
We split the paycheck and drove home. We arrived home and I took a shower. Afterward, I was going to go to his room and ask for a candle when I overheard a conversation.
“Mom, I told you, I don’t like her.”
“No, I am not your pet, do it yourself,” He said while smoking.
I was heartbroken. I had started to trust him. More importantly, I had started to like him.
My heart started beating fast. I went back to my room and locked the doors. I started tearing up.
“Combine the necklaces,” I remember his mom saying.
I waited until he was asleep. I packed my bag and left. I went to the columbarium and took the necklaces.
“I am missing a piece,” I thought to myself.
I thought back to what the woman was wearing and saying.
“This could lead to your real parents,” She had said.
“My real parents,” I thought to myself.
I called someone and said, “I need you to track someone for me.”
“Park So-mi,” I said.
“Okay, thank you,” I said and ended the call.
I drove to her place and when I got there I knocked on the door. She opened it and said “Chae-Young,” in surprise.
“I am sorry if I woke you up,” I said with a smile.
“Not at all, come on in,” She said.
I went inside and looked around. She turned around and said, “Do you want anything to drink?”
“No I am okay,” I said.
I put on my gloves and slowly graded the kitchen knife. I smiled and nodded. I moved closer and stabbed her, multiple times.
“I know you were in on killing them,” I said with a smile.
I graded the necklace and went into her rooms. I placed the necklaces together and it pointed to “Nepal,” I said.
I then looked at everything around her room. She had been following me and Sora. I looked at everything. I then saw a news article.
“Killed in a massacre,” I said and laughed.
“As if.”
I booked a flight to Nepal. In the coming week, I had collected so much evidence. While erasing the fact that I killed Hae-Jin’s mother.
I called Sora.
“Hello?” She picked up.
“Let’s meet up, this is important,” I said.
She has agreed and we met at Lotte World.
“What’s up,” She said as we walked.
“I know where our real parents are,” I said and she looked at me with shock.
“Where,” She said.
“Nepal, I need you to go with me,” I said.
“Look I can’t I” She was saying but I cut her off.
“I will protect you, look this can be something big,” I said.
She thought about it the whole day.
At midnight she called my hotel room number and said “Let’s find them.”
That weekend we left for Nepal. When we got there. I went to an address and a Korean woman answered the door.
“Hello,” I said and showed her the necklace. She immediately let us in.
“Finally you found me.”
“You look just like your m-mother,” she said while tearing up.
We comforted her, by the time we left her place. We had one name to help us.
“Lee Seohyun.”
