The Unsurpassed Maiden - Chapter 169
“Why? Why do you talk about the Jeon’s like they have done something so terrible?” Mi Young asks innocently.
Upon hearing the black haired girl’s question, Hae Choon couldn’t help but laugh. When he sees the young girl looking at him with a serious and curious expression he stops. The man clears his throat before he starts explaining again, “Anyway, the Jeon’s are indeed the nastiest out of all the clans. Sure, sometimes the other clans do something bad but the Jeon’s are way extreme.”
“What did they ever do anyway?”
Hae Choon coks his head to the side as he glances at the young girl. Mi Young knew that the other party was trying to assess her so without blinking away from the man’s strong gaze, the young girl remained calm. Finally, Hae Choon sighs before opening his mouth once more, “The Jeon’s are known to be really strict. Do you know that they gather all the children that belong to their clan starting from the age of 7 to the center of their town every single day and beat them until they show any manifestation that they have the Pyro ability within them?”
Hearing this, Mi Young couldn’t help but let out a shock gasp. “That is indeed extreme.”
“Uhn. Indeed and those who aren’t able to show any manifestation within two years of constant beating are immediately considered as cast outs.” Hae Choon added while looking at nothing in particular. “I still remember that day when I was visiting a town in the South and I saw an eight year old kid crying in the corner of the streets with his body filled with different bruises. I asked him what happened to him and he said that not only did the guards beat him but his own family as well because he can’t manifest any Pyro ability in almost one year. They even said he was a big disgrace to them.”
As each word came out from Hae Choon’s mouth the more Mi Young realized how cruel the old Jeon’s were. How did they become a family like that?
Hae Choon looks at Mi Young’s expression before saying, “I don’t know what kind of people are the Jeon’s are right now but based from your expression it doesn’t seem like they’re as cruel like my time but I’m just telling you some of the truth about them so you can have an idea about the past. I’m not saying you should change the way you think about them.”
“No.” Mi Young suddenly says while looking at the floor like it was the most interesting thing out of all. “You’re right. Even though they have helped the kingdom a lot, the Jeon’s are still the same.”
“They still beat kids to death?” Hae Choon asks, genuinely curious.
Mi Young shakes her head. “No. But they still prioritize the Jeon’s who have the Pyro ability. And if you don’t you are immediately treated as a cast out.”
Hae Choon hums after saying that. “I don’t know what’s wrong with being able to have other elements but they sure are stupid for letting those people go. They can be great to help their clan, you know.”
Remembering a few of her friends coming from the Jeon clan that were treated as cast-outs because they have different elements, Mi Young couldn’t help but agree with what the other party had said. “Indeed they don’t know how precious those gems are.”
Hae Choon studied the black haired girl’s face for a minute before she started talking about another topic again. “Anyway, I forgot to tell you that the Jeon’s also wiped out a whole town.”
Mi Young instantly whipped her head towards the other party after Hae Choon said those words. “What?!”
Hae Choon slowly nodded his head as he repeated his words. “The Jeon’s wiped out a whole town just because of some small argument.”
“W-What do you mean?” Mi Young asks curiously. If Hae Choon was really telling the truth then her opinions and the way she sees the Jeon clan is starting to take a 360 degree view. She can’t imagine a clan can be this cruel.
“I can’t remember what town that was but I assume it was a clan filled with many potential witches.” Hae Choon says with a hum. Mi Young looks up at him and sees him thinking deeply with his eyebrows furrowed like he was really trying to remember the name of the town.
“Witches?”
“Those Mages who practice Dark and Light Magic? Like Soo Young. Anyway, in the old times, the Witches were like a huge threat to the nine clans. Most of the clans don’t think much about them because they believe that the Mages from the direct families of the nine clans are still the strongest ones. However, the Jeon’s took them seriously. After hearing that a whole town is filled with so many potential Witches, they went and barged into the town and massacred every last person there.”
“Why? What did that town ever do to them?” Mi Young asks. Although it had happened many years ago she still felt lots of pity towards the massacred town and waves of anger towards the Jeon’s.
Hae Choon shrugged. “I don’t know. But many people believed that the Jeon’s took them as a huge threat towards their dominance so they went there, slaughtered every single Mage in the town to eradicate the possible threats.”
“Why are they so afraid of Witches?”
“I don’t know what you have learned from your school or if they yet again erased another important piece of our history but Witches can become so powerful that they can even overthrow the Great Sage.” Hae Choon explains calmly while he fidgets with the helm of his shirt.
The black haired girl’s eyes widened in surprise upon hearing Hae Choon’s words. “Overthrow the Great Sage…..but how?”
“I know it sounds impossible but back in my time, Witches could learn any kind of Magic because of the god they worship.” Hae Choon started. “People believed that this Witch god can give them anything they want as long as they give her something in return.”
“Who is this Witch god?”
“It is never known. And I’m guessing that up until now no one learned of the god’s name.” Hae Choon explains. “And so the Jeon erased them from the map and as well as their names in all of the history books. They even pretended that nothing happened and even made everyone believe that it was another clan that slaughtered the whole town.”
“T-That’s…”
“Cruel?” Hae Choon asks.
Mi Young shakes his head. “Pure evil.”
Hae Choon instantly chuckled after hearing this word coming out from the black haired girl’s mouth. “Indeed. But to them, they were doing something right that can benefit the whole kingdom.”
“Why do they act like they are the most powerful clan among the others?”
Hae Choon shrugs. “I don’t really know but I think it has something to do with their element. Maybe because fire indicates courage and danger? I really don’t know.”
“Or maybe they are just pure psychopaths.” Mi Young says with a shrug.
Hae Choon gave her a side glance after saying those words and winked at him. Then, the man stretches his body as he yawns. “Based on your stories earlier, the Jeon’s are considered as the most fearsome clans right now, right?”
Mi Young nodded her head after hearing the man’s words. “Yes. And everyone thinks it’s because the first Mage who stepped up to fight off Tartarus was a Jeon.”
“How stupid and pathetic.” Hae Choon comments. “People really do believe anything without even investigating and knowing the real truth.”
“That’s because they tend to believe the words coming out from other people’s mouths more than those from the books.” Mi Young added while gently shaking her head after finding out another truth that was hidden from their generation. “I mean, I don’t really get it.”
“You don’t get what?” Hae Choon asks while raising an eyebrow at the black haired girl.
“Why would they hide the truth from us? Why don’t they just tell us the truth?” Mi Young questions.
Hae Choon looked at Mi Young before sighing. “Because they’re still hiding something really big.”
“Like what?” Mi Young asks.
She felt Hae Choon’s eyes on her and she waited for him to tell her something but the man just shook his head. “I don’t know but I’m sure there’s more to it than hiding some of the truths. I think they’re trying to erase and change what is destined to happen.”
“Destined to happen?”
“Uhn.” Hae Choon says.
“What are you trying to say?”
“I think someone very powerful and who knows the truth is trying to hide and run away from what was already prophesied.” Hae Choon says while looking directly at the black haired girl.. Hearing those words coming from the other party’s mouth as he gazes so intently at Mi Young makes the young girl shiver on her spot.
