The way to Protect the Female Lead’s Older Brother - Chapter 28
CASSIS POV
(Flashback Continued)
The trio made their way down another corridor before stopping. This time, they finally seemed to have made their destination. If they had met Lady Agriche in front of Roxana’s room, then this place was less than a minute’s walk away.
Cassis Pedelian’s chance to escape was over. His body was thrown into the junior guard’s arms so that their cheeks touched. The guard fumbled and held onto the toy awkwardly. Sweat poured down his face from holding the prisoner.
With his unoccupied hands, the senior guard took out a chain of keys from his belt and unlocked the door.
“We should call someone to guard him afterward, while I make a duplicate key,” the senior guard said.
“Ugh,” the junior guard grunted. Cassis could feel his blood seep into the guard’s uniform. “Christ, ‘urry, would you? Dis ‘ere bag o’ bones wes heavy,” he said.
The junior guard pushed Cassis inside as soon as the door opened. Cassis fell like a broken doll and landed on his stomach with his palms facing outward. His neck was askance which gave him a view of a dim wall.
“Hullo, looks like the messenger got to you, alright,” the senior guard spoke to someone in the room.
“Oh? You’ve brought the body here in one piece,” the physician said.
“Yes, per Miss Roxana’s orders. Please heal him quickly.”
The senior guard gave an order to his junior.
“F&#k,” the junior guard said. He dragged Cassis’s body to a bare bed before slumping into an empty chair. The senior guard continued to stand while the physician sat near Cassis Pedelian with a pen twiddling between his fingers.
“Quite rough, quite rough,” the physician said, disagreeably. He turned in his chair to fiddle with a few bottles and packets before turning back to Cassis.
The physician poured a numbing medicine in Cassis’s mouth that had the same effect as morphine. The effect was instantaneous. Cassis felt bliss as his body began to feel like a block of wood. He could feel nothing. He could easily focus on men’s conversation now.
“I’m giving him a paralysis potion just in case. Hate it when the toys whip out at me while I’m doing a procedure,” the physician explained to the guards. His cold, spidery fingers deftly began to work over Cassis’s body. He started first with covering the gaping flesh wound on the patient’s stomach with a wad of gauze, bandages, and tape. “Hmm, how long did the Miss want this one alive? If it’s more than a few hours, I’ll have to give this thing a few stitches.”
The doctor sighed. He sounded overworked. He slapped a plaster over Cassis’s shoulder.
“Don’t work too hard,” the senior guard said, sympathetically. “We just need this thing alive.”
“Hmm, yes,” the physician said. “That is a helpful comment, actually.”
The junior guard took a nap as the senior guard and physician chattered.
“We saw the fourth wife on our way here,” the senior guard said. “Did you see her as well? She mentioned the late Master Asil.”
“Did she? I wonder why,” the physician said.
“Does this toy resemble the late Master at all? I’ve only seen the boy once, and I can’t see the similarity.”
“We must support all the Madams, no matter their condition,” the physician said vaguely.
Asil. Cassis remembered the woman mentioning this name. So this was the name of her late son. The pieces were slowly beginning to fit together.
Although it was touching, Cassis did not feel entirely happy about being compared to a dead character.
“Maybe it’s my old age. You know how it is, Ross,” the senior guard said. “The toy’s face is grotesque, isn’t it? P’raps in a better light and with some food, there might be a resemblance. I just know I can’t see it.”
“Looking at its body, it seems to be roughly the same age as the late Master Asil when he died,” the physician said. “How troublesome. This one must have made quite a mess to have our Lord’s attention. See this dent on his cheek here? Hohoho, and this uppercut wound right between the ribcage? Oh yes, I can tell who attacked this one.”
After finishing the toy’s treatment in a slapdash way, the physician wiped his hands and left the room with the guards.
Cassis heard the door slam beside him.
Finally, he was alone.
